Monroeville Maulers @ Castle Rock Hounds |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Monroeville comes into Castle Rock 10 games under .500, while the Hounds stand at 20 games above the .500 mark. Castle Rock looking to put some distance between themselves and California, who is sitting four games back but has a tough series at Corktown. |
| Game #1: | Doug Davis goes 8.1 for Castle Rock, giving up 0 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks. Schmidt walks 8 Hounds and gives up 5 earned in 6.1 IP. Castle Rock gets homers from Dye and Bonds to take the game 6-0.
WP: Davis (4-3) |
| Game #2: | Monroeville is feeling pretty good, as they put up two runs in the top of the 1st. But, Castle Rock comes stormng back, with four runs in the bottom half including homers from Luis Gonzalez and Hyzdu. Things calmed down after that, but the teams found themselves tied at 5-5 going into the bottom of the 7th. The bullpens would decide this one it appears. Bonds greets Drew with a 2-run homer and Castle Rock takes the 7-5 lead. The Hounds add an insurance run in the 8th and it would be an 8-5 final.
WP: Quantrill (3-0) |
| Game #3: | The Hounds bats will not be silenced in this one, as they hit four homers (Bellhorn, Sweeney, Alex Gonzalez and Barrett) to back up a 7 IP, 1 ER performance from Pettitte. Soriano has a double and a HR for Monroeville in the 11-2 loss.
WP: Pettitte (4-0) |
| Game #4: | Monroeville is sick of getting beat up, and they put up 7 runs on Pineiro in the top of the 1st! Can Julian Tavarez hold on to the 7-run lead? Looking good in the early going as the Maulers score three more to make it 10-0 and Pineiro gets tossed. Monroeville ends up winning by two touchdowns, 17-3, on 18 hits, 6 walks and 2 errors by Castle Rock. An ugly game for the Hounds. Pineiro loses his first game of the season in style.
WP: Tavarez (1-2) |
| Game #5: | Kenny Rogers comes to the mound to right the ship for the Hounds and he does just that. He goes 7 innings and gives up just one ER. Meanwhile, Bonds and Hyzdu go deep for Castle Rock and they come away with the 8-1 victory.
WP: Rogers (5-1) |
| Game #6: | This is a tight back-and-forth affair, as Monroeville comes back to tie it up at 4-4 going into the 9th. In the top of the 9th, Pokey Reese gets thrown out trying to steal home. Castle Rock can’t take advantage in the bottom of the 9th and we head to extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, Placido Polanco leads off with a triple and Alex Gonzalez hits a grounder that scores Polanco and the Hounds win the series finale 5-4.
WP: Benitez (3-1) |
| Series Summary: | Castle Rock takes 5 out of 6 with a couple of close ones. Monroeville is a better team than their record would indicate. But, the Hounds bats just proved to be too much to handle. |
Michigan Marauders @ Flora-Bama Mullets |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Mauraders look to crawl out of the NL Central cellar while the Mullets battle to avoid losing ground on the Crabs and Hornets in the NL East. |
| Game #1: | The Mullets took a 3-1 lead on homers from Hunter and Vizquel in the first two innings and then exploded for five more runs in the 4th for the easy win. Flora-Bama 9-5 |
| Game #2: | Homers by Palmeiro and Boone helped the Mauraders to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Rowand’s broken bat two rbi single was all the Mullets could manage. Michigan 4-2 |
| Game #3: | Lieberthal’s three run homer capped a four run first inning for the Mauraders. Berkman got the Mullets on the board with a solo in the 1st. Penny loaded the bases in the 2nd and Vizquel drove in two. Flora-Bama loaded the bases again in the 6th, but only managed get one run and tie on a wild pitch to Piazza. In the bottom of the 10th, Vizquel tripled. Mesa decided to IW Berkman to face the backup catcher Gil. Another critical WP and the Mullets walked it off. Flora-Bama 5-4 10th |
| Game #4: | Crede drove in two for the Mullets in the 1st, but Johnson smacked a two run homer to tie in the 3rd for the Mauraders. An error by Sierra and a double by Kennedy put the Mullets back on top 4-2 in 4th. Crede’s solo in 8th put it away. Flora-Bama 5-2 |
| Game #5: | A throwing error by Piazza and a Guzman homer made it 2-0 in second. Palmero’s two run homer in 3rd made it 4-0. Bell was gunned at the plate by an itchy Hammonds in 3rd with when he tried to score on a deep fly. The Mullets finally got on the board when Bell homered in the 5th. A two run homer in the 8th by Gil made it a one run game, but Mesa shut door in the 9th. Hammond’s throw from the warning track ended up being the play of the game. Michigan 4-3 |
| Game #6: | Vizquel’s rbi single in the 2nd was matched by Halter’s rbi double in the top of the 4th. Piazza’s solo in the bottom of the 4th put the Mullets back on top and was the final run if the game. Both teams threatened in later innings, but the pens kept it tight. Flora-Bama 2-1 |
| Series Summary: | Flora-Bama won 4 of 6 in a very competitive back and forth series that could have easily gone the other way. |
Danbury Mad Hatters @ Hampton Huskies |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Hampton suffering from a curse of the Fs (Feeble, fumbly, and f*cked) hosts Danbury for six fun-filled games. |
| Game #1: | This game appropriately started with Jeff Suppan walking Danbury leadoff hitter Tony Womack and then Womack stole 2nd base and, of course, slid into and destroyed shortstop Andy Sheets‘ knee and knocked him out for a month. It went downhill from there. Tom Wilson and Steve Cox each wound up with three hits for Danbury as they easily topped Hampton 11-4. Not only did starter Jeff Suppan suck pitching on the mound he also couldn’t do crap in the field as he muffed a grounder and also three one away which led to three unearned runs being scored. But that was not the end of the lousy fielding as the Huskies committed three more errors. Danbury felt they had to get into the act, but could only manage to screw up twice in the game and Hampton failed to take advantage of any of those. Jim Thome crushed his 9th of the season for the Mad Hatters. Derrek Lee had no hits but walked three times, scored once and drove one in on a sac fly. yay |
| Game #2: | Hampton came back and scored five times in the 6th inning and took a 6-4 lead into the 9th only to have Jim Thome (10) launch and pinch hit two-run shot in the 9th off Bob Wickman to tie it and then had Toby Hall single in the 10th as Danbury came back from Hampton coming back with a 7-6 win. Danbury out-bungled Hampton in this game as they committed three errors to Hampton’s two. Two of the errors were by Hall so I guess he felt he had to have the game winning hit. Tony Womack also had two hits and drove in two for Danbury. Derek Lowe fluked into his 6th win of the year against no losses as he lasted the 9 innings despite allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks. AJ Hinch (3) tagged Lowe for a three-run homer in the 6th. Marcus Giles had two hits and scored two runs. |
| Game #3: | Tom Wilson collected his first homer as part of a 16-hit barrage on Hampton with the Mad Hatters somehow managing to only win by 7-4. Marvin Benard made the most of his mid-game appearance and went 2/2 with a double and two RBIs for the Mad Hatters who were led by Jim Thome who had three hits (all singles) and scored a run. Nelson Figueroa (3-4) allowed seven hits, four runs with 4 walks and five Ks in seven innings with Mike Remlinger coming in for the 9th to earn his fifth save. Marcus Giles (1) and AJ Hinch (4) homered for Hampton. |
| Game #4: | Another double-digit win for Danbury as they crushed the very crushable Hampton Huskies 11-3. Moises Alou led the Danbury hitters with a 3/3 game, one run scored and two driven in. Only Kerry Robinson failed to get a hit (stinking loser) with former Steve Cox heating up with a single and double that drove in four runs. Jim Thome (11) hit his third homer of the series while Chris Truby bopped his 1st of the season. Robert Fick had three hits and drove in two runs and Derrek Lee (5) homered for Hampton while Carlos Febles did his part by screwing up twice at shortstop as Hampton reached the 10-error mark in only the 4th game. So proud. |
| Game #5: | I guess in order to make up for our crappy pitching we need to score more than 10 runs – and we did! Hampton teed off on all three Danbury pitchers that took the mound (Rupe/Mahomes/Nelson) in a 11-4 win. We did, of course, commit one more error but the hitting was more than enough to compensate. Rob Mackowiak‘s return to the lineup went pretty well … he was 5/5 with three singles, a double, a homer, one run scored and five RBIs. Jeff Suppan was the beneficiary of the offensive display and won his first game of the season after he went 7 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks. He fanned four. Brent Abernathy was 2/4 with a run and two RBIs for Danbury. |
| Game #6: | No Mackowiak – no runs. Danbury blanked Hampton 5-0, but given that we only gave up five runs with Shawn Chacon starting it was really a win for Hampton. Joe Kennedy won for the second time in the series to move to 4-3. He allowed only five hits (Carlos Febles had three of them) in the complete game win while striking out six and walking just one. Reggie Taylor was 2/3 with a homer and two RBIs in the game and Jim Thome hit his 4th homer of the series and walked twice. Chacon pitched masterfully in five of his seven innings but was super shaky in the other two and wound up with only one strikeout against six walks. BRilliant. Hampton committed two more errors. |
| Series Summary: | Danbury smokes the Huskies asses and takes 5 of 6. |
Harper Woods Expos @ Fort Worth Panthers |
|
|---|---|
| Series Summary: | Ft. Worth hangs on to win the first game then Harper Woods wins the next 5. C. C. Sabathia remains winless as he gave up a three run homer in the 7th inning of game 5 to lose. There are rumors he may move to the bullpen. |
1Long Beach Titans
|
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Titans bring their rebuilding pitching staff to Manhattan for a six-pack and we get 4 more 1-run games! |
| Game #1: | With the score knotted at 2-2 in the bottom of the 10th, Lenny Harris gets a lead-off single off LaTroy Hawkins (boosted to 24*). A FC and then a 1 out Robert Machado walk-off single gives the Gas Hornets the 3-2 win! LBT 2-4-0 LP Hawkins (2-3) MGH 3-8-1 WP Wakefield (6-0) |
| Game #2: | Jose Vidro has a 3 for 5 day, 2 doubles, triple, Myers hits his 1st homer of the day, and Long Beach plates 2 runs off Kim in the 9th – but they fall 1 run short in an 8-7 come from behind Manhattan win. Long Beach up 4-2 in the 6th when the Gas Hornet charge began. Tied 4-4 in the 7th, Myers homer puts Titans back in the lead, but Manhattan ties it in the bottom half, then scores 3 in the 8th to salt it away – supposedly, but the 9th inning Titans rally made it scary. LBT 7- 9-2 LP Heredia (2-2) MGH 8-12-0 WP Kim (4-0) |
| Game #3: | Gas Hornets “stud” Brian Anderson goes the distance tossing a 5 hit shutout. And he tons of support as the pounds out 17 hits and scores 11 big runs. Garrett Anderson and Chris Singleton the big bats (each homers, along with Lenny Harris). LBT 0- 5-1 LP Peavy (1-5) MGH 11-17-1 WP Anderson (2-1) |
| Game #4: | Back to nail biting as teams swap runs in the 1st, Titans go up by 1 in the 3rd, then after the Gas Hornets score 3 in the 4th for a 4-2 lead, Long Beach plates 3 in their 5th inning. They add another n the 6th for a 6-4 lead. Mondesi had big game, 2 for 4, 3 runs, rbi, triple and homer (8). However, the bullpen again couldn’t hold it and Manhattan plates 2 in the 6th to tie and the game winner in the 7th. Wakefield and Kim shut down the Titans to close out the game. LBT 6- 9-0 LP Kershner (0-1) BS Riske (1) MGH 7-14-0 WP Wakefield (7-0) S Kim (9) |
| Game #5: | Another nail biter that goes to extra innings when a Ray Durham 9th inning error allowed Long Beach to tie the game 2-2. Then in the 11th, a Damian Jackson (back with Manhattan) laces a 2 out double off the wall. Then Blum gets the IW so Heredia can face Tino Martinez. Tino comes through with the walk-off double and a 3-2 Manhattan victory. LBT 2- 5-0 LP Heredia (2-3) MGH 3-12-1 WP Williams (2-0) BS Kim (2) |
| Game #6: | In the finale, Raul Mondesi homers (9) in the 1st and Trot Nixon hits a 2 run shot (5) in the 9th – however in between the Gas Hornets score 9 times for an easy victory. LBT 3- 5-1 LP May (1-3) MGH 9-16-0 WP Halama (2-1) |
| Series Summary: | 4 Close ones, but the Titans pitching has lots of holes and the Gas Hornets batters took advantage and the Manhattan bullpen was able to close things off for a sweep. |
