Long Beach Titans @ Flora-Bama Mullets
|
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | The team from the Pacific visits the Atlantic. |
Game #1: | Vaughn and Hunter homered in 1st for the Mullets only runs. But a Myers rbi double in 3rd was all Lawrence would allow. He did have to leave in the 7th and will be on DL for the next 14 days. Sasaki picked up the save. Flora-Bama 3-1 |
Game #2: | Nixon led off with a homer and the Titans scored three runs on five hits in the first. Crede hit his first homer of his career to Flora-Bama on the board. Minor solo made it 4-1 Titans. Kenney solo and Piazza rbi single made it a one run game. Burba came on in relief in the 7th and gave up three run Piazza bomb. Mondesi double got one run back, but Sasaki closed it out. Flora-Bama 6-5 |
Game #3: | Nixon two run homer in 3rd gave Long Beach the early lead. A Bell solo in the bottom of the 3rd made it a one run game. Vidro’s costly error in 6th allowed two to score. Mullets added two more insurance runs in 7th. Flora-Bama 5-2 |
Game #4: | Titans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in 2nd. Mullets loaded the bases in 5th with no outs but only managed two sac flies. Mondesi three run homer in 9th insured no more comebacks. Long Beach 7-2 |
Game #5: | Jimenez gave up only 1 hit over the last 7.2 innings in relief for the win. Hampton gave up only one unearned in the 4th and one earned in 7th. Flora-Bama 3-0 |
Game #6: | Back to back home runs from Minor and Mondesi gave the Titans a brief lead in 4th. Mullets tied it in 5th and then went ahead on a Mo Vaughn three run homer in the 6th. Flora-Bama 8-3 |
Series Summary: | A young Jake Peavy gets his first career victory and helps Long Beach avoid the sweep. Flora-Bama loses Lawrence and Simon for the next series, but they’ll at least get two others back from injury. |
Hampton Huskies @ Valdosta Bombers |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Hampton @ Valdosta. Neither team has a lot of pitching, so we will see some runs. |
Series Summary: | Valdosta wins 4 of 6 in a hit-filled series. Bombers get to .500 and hit the road next week. Hampton needs some TLC, as they are having some serious fatigue issues. |
Dondero Oaks @ Harper Woods Expos |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Harper Woods heads to Dondero for a 6 game set. With a series against one of the worst teams in the league the Expos are hopeful to keep pace with Chicago in the AL Central. |
Game #1: | Dondero 7 Harper Woods 5W: D. Wall (1-0) L: C. Zambrano (1-3) S: M. Rivera (2) |
Game #2: | RAIN OUT |
Game #3: | Dondero 3 Harper Woods 2 (10 innings)W: M. Rivera (1-0) L: E. Gagne (0-1) |
Game #4: | Harper Woods 4 Dondero 2 (12 innings)W: M. Hendrickson (2-2) L: G. Carrara (0-2) |
Game #5: | Harper Woods 2 Dondero 0W: M. Mussina (4-0) L: J. Santana (1-3) S: E. Gagne (12) |
Game #6: | Dondero 6 Harper Woods 1W: K. Ishii (2-4) L: C. Zambrano (1-4) |
Series Summary: | In a surprise, Dondero takes 3 of 5 games played from Harper Woods with a rain out. Maybe this could be an inflection point for Dondero to be a bit more competitive through the rest of the season, but it is doubtful. Harper Woods will head to Castle Rock next in what should be a great series. Dondero will host Houghton. |
Michigan Marauders @ Manhattan Gas Hornets |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | What a wild series! All 6 games decided by 1 or 2 runs. A 2-1 and 3-1 game – YET there were 74 runs scored this week. Results might seem one-sided, but this was anything but…..plus injuries….. |
Game #1: | A Garrett Anderson 2 run homer (11) in the 1st was all Brian Meadows and the bullpen needed as they hold the Mauraders to a single run and that was unearned in the 2nd. FINAL Manhattan 2 Michigan 1 MIC 1-2-0 LP Sheets (1-3) MGH 2-5-4 WP Meadows (2-0) S Kim (6) Injuries – newcomer called up for his 1st series in his return to the Gas Hornets – Lenny Harris (5 days), guess he’ll miss the fun this week. |
Game #2: | Michigan storms out to 5 runs in the 1st – driving Kevin Jarvis to the showers with only 1 out recorded. Bernie Williams has big game, 3 for 4, 2 runs, rbi. Jim Edmunds clubs a 2 run homer (5). Brett Boone drives in 2 with a single and double. Mauraders climb to an 8-1 lead into the bottom of the 8th, but Gas Hornets give them a big scare scoring 5 runs in the 8th – Quinton McCracken gets a bases clearing single as part of the scare. But Orlando Hernandez comes on with 2 on and quells the rally and earns the 4 out save! FINAL Michigan 8 Manhattan 6 MIC 8-12-0 WP Brad Radke (2-3) S O.Hernandez (1) MGH 6-11-1 LP Jarvis (2-1) |
Game #3: | Mauraders are making a big thing of the 1st inning, again they score 5 runs. And it gets worse, the score 3 more in the 2nd and single runs in the 3rd and 4th – that’s 10 runs after 4 turns at the plate. This time the Gas Hornets starter, Brian Anderson, absorbs the beat down (6 ip, 14 hits, 10 runs!). The onslaught includes homers by Bernie Williams (1), Mike Lieberthal (2) and Rafael Palmeiro (7). Funny thing however, the Gas Hornets, down 9-0 in the 3rd come back and score 3 in the 3rd and then 6 in the 4th and it’s 10-9 Michigan after 4. Then the Gas Hornets score 2 more in the 5th to take the lead 11-10! Really?
Livian Hernandez takes most of the beating (3 ip, 9 hits, 8 runs and he leaves in the 4th). Moving on to the 8th and Kim is in for the what, 6 out save? Well a hold anyway – NOPE – he gives up a 2nd homer to Palmeiro (8) and the Mauraders regain the lead 12-11! Palmeiro with 4 rbis, Leiberthal with 3 – 15 hits for Michigan. Jose Mesa in to seal the deal – except he has to get best Geoff Blum – who comes up in the 8th with a runner on and already 3 for 4 in the game – BLAM! 2 run homer (4) and Manhattan retakes the lead – and Mark Guthrie comes in and pitches a perfect 9th for the save! Oh come on…..25 runs, 31 hits, 5 homers, 4 doubles and a triple. |
Game #4: | Normal Game #2 Gas Hornets get on the board 1st with a 2 run Anderson double in the 4th. Nick Johnson cuts the lead down to 2-1 with a solo homer (3) for Michigan in the 4th. Reed continues to pitch well, but Manhattan brings in Kim in the 8th (another shot at a 6 out save?). This time he is perfect, and with an insurance run in the 8th, Manhattan holds on for the win. FINAL Manhattan 3 Michigan 1 MIC 1-5-0 LP Brad Penny (2-3) MGH 3-7-0 WP Rick Reed (3-3) S Kim (7) |
Game #5: | Enough of that low scoring stuff #3. Brian Schneider and his +5 arm gets the start behind the plate – and besides keeping the Gas Hornets from running, he goes 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 5 rbis. Double and homer (1) – the Grand Slam variety account for those rbis. The Grand Slam – part of a 5 run 6th inning outburst for Michigan. That, coupled with the 2 runs they scored in the 2nd, gave them a 7-5 lead. Yup, Manhattan managed 2 runs in the 3rd and 4th and a single run in the 4th and they drew to within 1 at 7-6 with a single run in the 6th. Garrett Anderson was having another great game, 2 for 4, 3 rbis, homer (12) – Shane Spencer goes 4 for 4 with 3 runs and a homer (1), but with all that it was 7-6 Michigan going to the bottom of the 9th. Michigan was putting all their hopes on Jose Mesa who was starting the 9th as his 3rd inning of relief – he was perfect in the 1st two innings. But not the 9th, 3 hits and 2 run capped by a Ray Durham 2 run double and the Gas Hornets pull this one out with the walk-off! FINAL Manhattan 8 Michigan 7 MIC 7- 9-0 LP Mesa (1-2) BS (1) MGH 8-14-2 WP Victor Nunez (2-0) |
Game #6: | One More High Scoring event #4 Game starts with back to back homers by Bernie Williams (2) and Jim Edmonds (6) – YIKES! Somehow that was the Mauraders would score…in the 1st. But then the roof falls in on Ben Sheets in the bottom half. He faces 10, 5 hits, 2 walks, a Lieberthal error and Ricky Stone is called in from the bullpen. Sheets ends up surrendering 7 runs in the 1st (4 unearned!). And Manhattan feels real good with the 7-2 lead after 1. In the 3rd they make it 8-2. But of course, the game isn’t over – Rafael Palmeiro and his 2 run homer (9) in the 3 run 5th and then another Michigan run in the 6th and the score is now 8-6 Manhattan with 3 innings left! Well, the bullpen for the Gas Hornets comes through – this time Kim only pitches a 2 out save in the 9th. FINAL Manhattan 8 Michigan 6 MIC 6-8-1 LP Sheets (1-4) MGH 8-9-4 WP Wakefield (5-0) S Kim (8) |
Series Summary: | Except for some playoff LIVE series, I can’t remember being as exhausted as I was after this one. Fortunately we were able to make the roster juggling work and get key hits when needed. Pitching had moments of brilliance this week, but more moments of failure. And we will be losing Matt Stairs for quite a while as he goes on the 15 day DL! |
DeWitt Tigers @ Monroeville Maulers |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Monroeville Maulers, 3rd place resting quietly in the AL Central at 12-16 welcome the Dewitt Tigers, tied for 2nd place in the AL East at 14-14. |
Game #1: | Sidney Ponson 2-2 vs Julian Tavarez 0-2
The Maulers jump out to a 3-0 lead on HRs by Vladimir Guerrero and Alphonso Soriano as Julian Tavarez shuts the door through 3IP. The Tigers plate 4 runs in the 4th for a short-lived lead as the Maulers score twice in the bottom half for a 5-4 MVM lead. DeWitt breaks through in the 7th for 3 runs and the victory as once again below average pitching is the Maulers fate. DeWitt an efficient 7 runs on 8 hits. DEW 7-5 DEW MVM |
Game #2: | Tony Armas, Jr 2-3 vs Jon Lieber 2-1
Once again, the Maulers starting pitching makes it through 3IP then the flood gates opened as the Tigers plate 3 runs in the 5th then 5 more in the 6th, same old song just a different beating this time as DeWitt pounds out 11 runs on 15 hits. Carlos Pena for the Tigers has himself a 3-HR game and 5-RBIs. Tony Armas, Jr. hangs tough for DeWitt to earn the W. DEW 11-3 DEW MVM |
Game #3: | Bartolo Colon 3-3 vs Pedro Astacio 2-2
The Mauler bats go silent and Pedro Astacio has staying power allowing 4 runs over 9IP but no run support. Finally, the Mauler bats wake up in the 9th against the DeWitt bull pen but too little too late. A fine performance from Bartolo Colon 8IP 6 hits 0-Runs. DEW 4-2 DEW MVM |
Game #4: | Paul Byrd 4-1 vs Nate Teut 0-0
“BOOM, BANG, SMACK, POW! Holy Rout Batman”, Maulers fall 13-4, pathetic… Adrain Beltre 3-5 6-RBIs. DEW 13-4 DEW MVM |
Game #5: | DEW 7-6 |
Game #6: | DEW 3-5 |

Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Baltimore Blue Crabs |
|

GOLDEYES 2 / 8 / 0 |
Game #3: | Thanks to homeruns by Robin Ventura and former Blue Crab Kevin Young, the Goldeyes jump out to a 4-0 lead after 3 innings. Baltimore would battle back with 4 in the 5th, 3 in the 7th, and 6 in the 8th and win the game 13-5. Jorge Posada had a single, double, and 5 RBIs for the Crabs. For the second game in a row, Winnipeg pitchers walked 10.
