Dondero Oaks @ Castle Rock Hounds |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Hope springs eternal as we open up the 2002 MWWL season at Castle Rock’s home park. The Hounds offense will, again, be outstanding, spearheaded by reigning league MVP, Barry Bonds. The pitching is better this year, but will it be enough? |
Game #1: | Johan Santana takes the mound to start the season for the Oaks, and he faces up against Joel Pineiro. Frank Thomas and Austin Kearns both hit solo homers in the 2nd to get Dondero on the board (that is a very early-2000’s way to start a season). Castle Rock gets one back on a bases loaded wild pitch in the bottom half. And then, Henry Blanco delivers a 2-RBI single from the nine spot to give Castle Rock the 3-2 lead. Santana escapes a jam, but he has walked four batters through two innings.
Wilkerson provides a 2-out RBI single in the 4th to extend the lead to 4-2 and Santana gets the hook. Snow adds a solo HR off of Tomko and it is 5-2. Castle Rock adds another off an RBI triple from Mark Ellis. In the bottom of the 8th, Kaz Ishii intentionally walks Bonds to load the bases with nobody out. Bold strategy. He does get Wilkerson to strike out, but hits Polanco to force in a run and they add one more on a sac fly to make it 8-2 and that would be the final. WP: Pineiro (1-0) |
Game #2: | John Lackey vs. the Gambler Kenny Rogers in Game 2. Mike Sweeney gets the Hounds on board in the first with a 2-run shot. Michael Barrett extends it with a solo HR of his own in the 3rd. Castle Rock adds two more in the 3rd, and Lackey gets the early exit, down 5-0. Bellhorn and Wilkerson add homers in the 8th. Frank Thomas gets Dondero on the board in the top of the 9th with a 2-run homer. But, it is too little too late, as the Hounds take Game 2 by an 8-2 score again.
WP: Rogers (1-0) |
Game #3: | Doug Davis, the weak link in the Hounds rotation, gets the start vs. Ishii in this one, who appeared in relief in Game 1. Kearns delivers a 2-run double to start the action in the 1st. Molina extends the lead to 5-0 with a 3-run homer in the 2nd and Dondero is feeling it! Frank Thomas hits his third homer in 3 games and it is now 8-0. Dondero giving Castle Rock a taste of its own medicine. Valentin and Thomas go back-to-back in the 3rd and it is 11-0. Adam Hyzdu, pinch-hitting for Bonds, finally gets Castle Rock on the board with a 3-run homer.
Dondero adds three more runs off of BJ Ryan in the 6th to take a 14-3 lead. Kearns continues his hot start to the season, with a 2-RBI double. The final is 16-3, Dondero. WP: Ishii (1-0) |
Game #4: | Jason Jennings and Kyle Lohse square off in this one, as Castle Rock is trying to forget about what happened in Game 3. Bonds gets Castle Rock on the board with his first HR of the year in the bottom of the 1st. Polanco doubles the lead to 4-0 with a 2-out double. Dondero fights to get 2-runs back on a Gibbons single.
Frank Thomas continues his HR streak, hitting one in the 4th straight game for the Oaks. Ibanez ties it up with an RBI single scoring Roberts, who stole second. Reggie Sanders then goes deep and Dondero has the 6-4 lead. Castle Rock loads the bases with one out in the 5th, but can only score one run and it is 6-5 after 5 innings. Brian Roberts delivers a clutch 2-out, 2-RBI single in the top of the 6th to give Dondero the 8-5 lead. Alex Gonzalez gets one back for Castle Rock with a solo HR and Bonds brings them all the way back to 8-8 with a 2-run shot after an error allowed Bellhorn on base. Kearns scores Valentin from 2nd with two out to give Dondero the lead back, 9-8. We have quite the barnburner going here. Because, Jermaine Dye wastes no time tying it up with a lead-off HR off of Carrara. Castle Rock loads the bases in the bottom of the 8th, but Carrara gets Dye to fly out and it is still 9-9. Benitez gets through the top of the 9th unscathed, despite a Kearns double (this guy is on fire). Rivera does the same for Dondero in the bottom half. Benitez stays out for the top of the 10th and gets Dondero in order. Julio Santana comes on for the bottom of the 10th. He walks Luis Gonzalez and Mark Bellhorn delivers a walk-off double to give Castle Rock the crazy 10-9 victory. Kearns goes 2-4 for Dondero and is batting .563 on the short season. Thomas gets his 5th homer and is batting “just” .438. Bellhorn goes 4-5 for Castle Rock, and he is batting .538 and Bonds is 2-2 with two homers and three walks and is batting .556. This offense is going to be fun to play with. WP: Benitez (1-0) |
Game #5: | Andy Pettitte and Brett Tomko square off in the series finale. Sweeney gets Castle Rock on the board in the bottom of the 1st with an RBI single. But, Molina ties it up with a solo HR in the top of the 3rd to make it 1-1. Sanders goes back-to-back and Dondero now has the lead. Alex Gonzalez punches one out of the park in the bottom of the 4th, a 3-run bomb, and Castle Rock now has the 4-2 lead.
Gonzalez goes deep again in Jason Jennings and Kyle Lohse square off in this one, as Castle Rock is trying to forget about what happened in Game 3. WP: Benitez (1-0) LP: Santana (0-1)the 6th to make it 5-2. And, the floodgates open as Castle Rock adds three more to make it 8-2. And, that is the final score (for the 3rd time in the series!). WP: Pettitte (1-0) |
Series Summary: | Castle Rock starts off strong, taking 4 out of 5 from a good Dondero team. The only loss was a 16-3 one, so the Oaks made it count. Three of the games were decided by the same score, 8-2. After one series, Sweeney is batting .692, Bonds is batting .571 and Bellhorn is batting .611. That is going to make it tough on opposing pitching staffs! |
Iowa Giants @ Houghton Penguins |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Get ready for the GIANTS – PENGUINS to do battle!! |
Game #1: | Houghton comes out of the gate swinging and wins the first game in the cold, cold snow in Houghton, 6-2. Buehrle gives up 2 hits over 6 innings. Maddux is ambushed for 5 runs in 4.2 innings. Jeff Kent hits his first bomb of the year. |
Game #2: | Iowa’s Stark gives up 3 hits and no runs over 8.1 innings, but his manager pulls him with 2 outs remaining. Nelson Cruz comes in and gets 1 out, but gives up a 2-out 3-run HR to Craig Wilson with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Houghton fell short by 7 runs, 10-3. |
Game #3: | Houghton’s Jeff Kent hit 2 more HRs, but that was all they could do versus Iowa’s Jered Weaver. Iowa wins 8-2. Saenz takes a pitch off the wrist and is projected to miss 2 weeks. |
Game #4: | Craig Wilson comes up big for Houghton in the bottom of the 8th with the game tied at 1 and hits a 3-run bomb. Dotel comes in to shut down Iowa in the 9th and gets his first save in a 4-1 win. Darren Oliver gave up 1 run in 6 innings, but Weber gets the win. |
Game #5: | Iowa’s Sandy Alomar goes 4-5 and Jose Vizciano goes 3-4 in the game as the Giants win 7-4. Gary Glover gets his first win and Guardado picks up his 2nd save in the series. |
Series Summary: | The Iowa Giants stomp on the Houghton Penguins taking the series 3-2. Houghton’s Jeff Kent hit 3 HRs in the series. Iowa surprisingly had 0 homeruns during the series but outscored the Penguins 28-19. The Penguins were hit by pitch 6 times in the series as Iowa retaliates for the injury to Saenz. Houghton plans to appeal to the Commissioner to fine Iowa for their thuggish behavior. |
Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Long Beach Titans |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Due to a file screw up by the home team, this series is being replayed. |
Game #1: | Winnipeg took an early 3-0 lead on a Young 2 run 2B in the 4th. Long Beach tied it in the 7th on a Mondesi 2 run HR and won it 5-3 when Nixon hit a walk off 2 run shot in the 9th. Glavine went the distance in taking the loss. |
Game #2: | Again, Winnipeg took an early lead. This time scoring 2 in the 1st on an Everett 2B. Long Beach held the Goldeyes from there and tied it 2-2 on a Buchanan HR in the 5th. It was still tied when the Titans loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th. Myers singled to give Long Beach a walk off 3-2 win. |
Game #3: | Long Beach scored a run in the 1st on a Lee 2B. After that, Pavano shut down the Titans as Winnipeg won 4-1. Lofton supplied all the offense needed with a 3 run HR in the 5th. Cordero pitched a scoreless 9th to pick up his first save of the year. |
Game #4: | Long Beach jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 4th with the key hit being a Minor 2 run 2B. Winnipeg chipped away and took a 5-4 lead in the 7th. Long Beach scored 5 in the bottom of the 8th to win 9-5. Guillen highlighted the inning with a grandslam. |
Game #5: | Lofton led off the game with a HR and Winnipeg never trailed in the 10-7 win. Lofton added another homer and 2 singles to lead the Goldeyes attack. Long Beach got close a couple times but the Winnipeg bullpen closed out the win. |
Series Summary: | Long Beach won 3 of the 5 games, all in their final at bat. |
Fort Worth Panthers @ California Quakes |
|
---|---|
Series Summary: | The California Quakes sweep the Fort Worth Panthers to open the season. |
Hollywood Vampires @ Blarney Drive Bandits |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | A strong Vampire strolls down Blarney to battle the Bandits. |
Game #1: | Randy Johnson v Roy Hallady has low scoring written all over it and they don’t disappoint.
0-0 heading into the bottom of the 6th we find Halladay in trouble. With two men on both Klesko and Lowell deliver to give Blarney a 2-0 lead. Johnson would allow just 4 hits over go 6.1. Embree and Groom on in relief would nail down the last 2.2 allowing just one base runner for the home squad. Konerko 2-3 w/ a double led Vampire sticks. HV 0 BDB 2 W: Johnson (1-0) |
Game #2: | David Wells takes on Mark Mulder. Blarney would get the scoring off quickly with 2 in the 1st. They would follow that up with 3 in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd (chasing Mulder) and 1 in the 4th. Meanwhile Hollywood bats were stifled by Wells as he would get pulled with a no-hitter going in the 7th. Bottom of the 7th would see Sauerbeck get ambushed for 6 runs on 5 hits and two walks to make the deficit 13-0. Blarney would add 1 more in the 8th off Foulke.
Bandits launch 7 HRs on the day while Wells and Weathers team up for a no-hitter. HV 0 BDB 14 W: Wells (1-0) |
Game #3: | Odalis Perez vs Al Leiter as the lefty hurlers keep coming.
Hollywood scores 1 in the 1st to score their first run of the series. They would add 2 more in the 2nd – Floyd and Mohr homers plus a defensive blunder power the visitors scoring. Blarney would retaliate in the bottom half of the 2nd for 2 and then 1 in the 3rd to knot it at 3 after 3 full. No scoring for either team in innings 4-5-6. Perez was tiring in the 7th and Blarney took advantage. With two men on Giles stepped in to PH for Pratt and drills a 3 run bomb, 6-3 Bandits. There would be no more runs scored this day. HV 3 BDB 6 W: Embree (1) |
Game #4: | Oliver Perez has his hands full against Roy Oswalt. No score after 3 the Vampires sneak one across in the 4th. 1-0 heading into the 7th Hollywood finally breaks through with a big 4-spot and take a huge 5-0 lead. Blarney would add 2 in the 8th but the visitiors match that in the 9th. All Vampires today as they pop 3 HRs.
HV 7 BDB 2 W: Oswalk (1-0) |
Game #5: | The Big Unit back on short rest to face Wade Miller. Both starters make it to the 7th inning where we find it 2-2. In the 8th Strange would enter for Blarney and face just one batter, allowing Millar to take him DEEP for the game winner. 2 Vampire errors helped Blarney stay in it.
HV 3 BDB 2 W: Miller (1-0) |
Series Summary: | Bandits take the series 3-2. |
Chicago Demolition @ Southlake Stealers |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Berman:The 2002 MWWL Season is about to begin and what a way to kick off the Season. I am Chris Berman alongside my Co-Hosts Harold Reynolds and LSU manager Skip Berman, no relations. Berman, Berman and Reynolds sounds like we should be a law firm. We are here on the Shores of Lake Huron in the Coulier-Morrisette Dome, as the Stealers of Southlake host defending AL Champions The Chicago Demolition. The stadium is named for local actor Dave Coulier of Full House fame and songwriter Alanis Morrisette who are currently dating. Something tells me these two are going to make it.
Reynolds: Well, “You Ought to Know” Chris. Berman: In what is already being called one of the greatest World Series ever, the Demolition came up short in game 7 losing to Randy Johnson and the Mullets. In a Surprise move the Demolition will start with Millwood on the mound instead of 2001 Cy Young winner Darryl Kile on the bump. Kile led the Demolition with a 19-8 record and a sub 3 ERA. He started the year pitching for Southlake and upsetting the Demolition in the season opener before getting traded to Chicago to help guide them to the World Series. Reynolds: Kile will get the ball in the Series finale on Wednesday. Not that he needs any extra motivation in 2002. In the offseason he said it was the most HEART Breaking feeling he had when losing the World Series. Skip Berman: This Kid has a big Heart. He has many years left to experience excitement on the field. I am excited to see the type of number he will put up in his career. Reynolds: I wonder how the three of them got along on the boat. Skip Berman: It’s always awkward meeting people for the first time. But when you travel in celebrity circles like these stars, you often meet someone one time and then never again. I’m sure that’s how today was. I mean Tom is a baller. Supermodels just don’t travel down that path. Besides he is engaged to an up-and-coming actress. She has Future Oscar winner written all over her. C. Berman: The National Anthem was performed by Jennifer Lopez and God Bless America was sung by Ja-Rule. The two of them currently have the number one song on the Charts. Reynolds: If you have never been inside Heinz Field when that is played you are truly missing something magical. The lights go dark, and the first 50 seconds of that song is like no hype song you have ever heard. But when that scream comes out and the music begins that mob turns into nothing short of a wave of energy that drowns the opponents in a sea of noise. Sarge and the Stealers are hoping to re-create that same home field advantage. C. Berman: If that is the case this team is going to need to get stronger in a hurry. S. Berman: Right, you are Chris. They are still a long way from challenging the Demolition for the Central crown, but they have some cornerstone pieces in place. Reynolds: Outfielder Carlos Beltran has been named Team Captain, while recent draft pick Mark Prior from USC is being called a future Cy Young winner. Prior has connections with Southlake and the city. His private coach, Dr. Tom House, married a young lady from St Clair Shores. Prior is often seen with Dr. House around town where he worked-out at the local high school. In fact, before drafting Mark with the 6th pick this year, Sarge Stauffer caught a few of Prior’s bullpens at the high school. C. Berman: Talk about hands on ownership. Let’s not waste any more time. It’s time for the chatter to end and for the Season to Begin. Today is April 6th, 2002, Play Ball! |
Game #1: | The Future starts today, as Southlake trusts the Rookie Mark Prior with the ball. Would the Kid from USC have butterflies was the question. The answer would be Heck No. Through the first 8 innings he would surrender two hits and one walk. No player from Chicago even sniffed second base. Millwood was matching Prior pitch for pitch. He went 6.1 giving up just 6 hits. Unfortunately, one was a solo shot by Marlon Anderson in the third and the other was an RBI single by Anderson in the 7th. With a 2 to nothing lead, would Sarge allow the rookie to take the mound in the 9th. The answer was yes. Chicago looked at their bench and asked the veteran Rickey Henderson to show this young punk what it means to be in The Show. Rickey worked hard fouling off fastball after fastball to get a nine-pitch walk. Rickey may be getting up there in age, but Rickey is always going to be Rickey. You know he was itching to go. Sarge wasted no time and called upon his closer Smoltz to see if he could get three outs. He blew a 93 MPH fastball by Justice for out 1. With McLemore at the plate Rickey bluffed going to second. It was good enough to get Eckstein to bite toward the bag, leaving a hole for McLemore to hit through on the left side. Most runners wouldn’t make it to third on a groundball to leftfield, but Rickey ain’t most runners. Rickey at 3rd, the game tying run at first and the go-ahead run at the plate in the form of Carlos Delgado. Smoltz went fastball up, followed by two sinkers trying to coax a double play. On his third consecutive sinker he got what he wanted, a tailor-made ground ball to Eckstein. However, Eck bobbled the ball, they were only able to get the runner at 2nd, and the run scored. The shoutout may be over but this game was far from that. The go-ahead run was still at the plate, this time by the name of Stewart. First game nerves calmed down for Smoltz by now, he had no trouble finishing off Stewart for the final out. Final Score: Southlake 2 – Chicago 1 |
Game #2: | Pedro being Pedro. Chicago put the first batter on in the first but couldn’t score. They put the first two batters on in the second and still couldn’t score. They put the first three batters on in the 3rd and this time they scored. A sac fly by Renteria and a single by Higginson would give Chicago a 2-0. Pedro meanwhile was perfect through the first four innings. A double by Payton followed by a walk and some small ball allowed Southlake to tie it up at two thanks to a two-out single from Conine. Even though Adams had only given up two runs he wasn’t sharp. Sarge eventually pulled him after 5.1 and a runner on first. Shuey wasn’t much better giving up two hits and a walk to give Chicago the lead again 4-2. In fact, none of the Southlake staff was sharp today. Delgado hit a two-run bomb in the 8th off Mateo and Speier would give up a run in the 9th. Southlake had threatened in their half of the sixth after Chicago had taken the lead, so they went to their pen with two outs. Justin Kaye would kill any thoughts of a comeback. Pedro finished giving up two runs on three hits, three walks and seven strikeouts. Southlake would eventually score two unearned runs off Kaye in the 8th, along with a run off Wagner in the 9th. But the bullpen had dug too deep of a hole for the offense and Nen came in behind Wagner to shut the door against his former teammates.Final Score: Chicago 7 – Southlake 5 |
Game #3: | Some days it doesn’t pay to get out of bed. Dave Williams should have stayed in bed today. Getting the ball for game three Justice greeted him with a solo homerun. That was followed up with a single by McLemore, a HBP to Delgado (injured for two days) and a three-run shot by Stewart. An upset Williams then hung a breaking ball to Renteria who deposited that one in the upper deck. By the time Sarge could get to the mound it was 5-0 Chicago with still no outs. Spotting Rocket a 5 Run lead sounds like suicide. Maybe it led to him just going through the motions. The Stealers got two back in the bottom of the first on a Mabry homerun. Chicago added two runs in the third off Speier but gave them right back plus another in the bottom half of the inning. After three innings of play it was 7-5 Chicago. After giving up a one out walk in the fourth the Chicago skipper decided it wasn’t Roger’s day and went to the pen with Kaye. Kaye was sharp for two innings, when he felt a twinge in his shoulder (13 Day DL) and was relieved by Graves. Graves should have taken more time in the pen, because his second pitch was met by Anderson for a HR to right field. It was now 7-6 after six innings. Chicago put two on in the 7th with one out and went to Hasagawa. He attempted to pick off Stewart as second. Eckstein thought he got Stewart but his argument contained some forbidden words and he was quickly tossed by Country Joe West. After a scoreless 7th and 8th inning, this change proved to be a benefit, as the slick fielding Ojeda made a tag at second base in the top of the 9th that Eck would not have pulled off. Southlake had life trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the 9th. Chicago said Hope May Spring Eternal, but it dies when we bring Wagner to the mound. The hard throwing lefty struck out the side to secure the winFinal Score Chicago 7 – Southlake 6 |
Game #4: | Who says tiny shortstops don’t have power? Edgard Renteria hit his second homerun in as many days, this one off Alvarez, and gives Chicago a 2-0 lead in the first. Benes got the pill for Chicago and started out like a master. Southlake didn’t get their first hit until the 4th inning. Their second hit came in the bottom of the 6th, which was a solo shot by Jay Payton. After a shaky start Alvarez got into a grove and gave up no more runs through the 7th. Graves, who was masterful yesterday, relieved Benes. He may have been a bit tired as in the bottom of the 7th he hung a two ball slider that Conine belted for a solo shot that tied the game at 2-2. After a bloop single by Anderson Graves gave way to Donnelly. Eckstein with a smash down the line at third was snagged by Nevin. However, the All-Star third baseman couldn’t get a clean grip on the ball and sailed it over Clark’s head at first base. Southlake now led 3-2. With the lead Sarge now went to his bullpen. Gabe Molina tosses a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Defensive replacements followed in the 9th. Ojeda replaced Blalock at third base with Smoltz on the mound. Ojeda was challenged right away with a screamer to his left. A diving stop followed by a throw from his knees led to the first out. Pinch Hitter Colburn doubled to put the tying run in scoring position. But Smoltz coaxed a strike out from Justice and an infield pop-up out of his former teammate Alomar to shut the door. Series now tied going into Wednesday’s finale.Final: Southlake 3 – Chicago 2 |
Game #5: | The Rubber match featured ex-Stealer and current Cy Young winner Kile on the mound. Southlake went back to Williams who started two days ago. Today he was able to get past the 1st inning. Southlake staked him a 1-0 lead with a single by Beltran and a double by Ben Davis. Chicago started the second inning with two infield singles and a bloop just out of the reach of Eckstein to tie the game at 1-1 after one and half innings. The third inning felt like Déjà vu for Williams. An infield single, a hit batter and a bloop just out the reach of Eckstein gave Chicago a 2-1. The game stayed that way until an error by Clark put Conine on first. A shot by Carlos the Captain gave the Stealers a 3-2 after 5 innings. In the 7th Shuey came in and loaded the bases with two outs. Sarge went to his stopper Smoltz who had already worked 2 games this series. Sarge went to the well once too often as Smoltz was greeted with a bases clearing double by Renteria. His 7th RBI of the series and a 5-3 Chicago lead. Pinch Hitting Ace Colbrunn would add a two-run shot off Mateo and Renteria would get his 8th RBI of the week on a solo shot in the 9th inning. The bullpen which was to be the strength of the Stealers now has a staggering number of relievers with double digit ERAs. Mercado who relieved Kile picks up the win in relief and fireballer Wagner gets a two inning save, his second of the year.Final Score: Chicago 8 – Southlake 4 |
Series Summary: | Chicago takes the Series 3 games to 2. Southlakes deep bullpen is not as strong as we thought. Both teams struggled to hit and neither team could field with 9 errors combined in the 5 games.
The Rookie Prior had a great debut and is a Pitcher of the week candidate going 8 innings of 2 hit ball. One one earned run when his bullpen failed to do their job and 6 Ks. Renteria came out of the gates hot hitting .444 with an OPS of 1.476, 3 homeruns and 8RBIs. With a contract bonus of $100K for every Player of the Week honor he will be checking the newspaper this week hoping to see his name. Both teams stay in the division, with Chicago going back for their home opener against Harper Woods, while Southlake visits defending Central Division Champions Monroeville as they kick off a 17 game road trip. |
Hampton Huskies @ Manhattan Gas Hornets |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Opening series of MWWL and Manhattan hosts the Huskies from Hampton – WOOF, WOOF as they bark into town. Gas Hornets made a few moves to hopefully be competitive, Huskies made moves for the future…. |
Game #1: | Huskies turn a Jeter fielding error in the 2nd into 3 runs and trade bait Jeremy Giambi goes yard (1) for 2 runs in the 5th. But the Huskies are done in when Manhattan plates 6 in the 3rd (and trickle in 3 more runs down the stretch). Geoff Blum (1), Derek Jeter (1) and Garrett Anderson (1) all homer for the home team. Final 9-5 Manhattan WP Tim Wakefield (1-0) in relief LP Kris Benson (0-1) |
Game #2: | Barry Zito, ace of the Huskies (and more trade bait) gets the start against Matt Morris, Gas Hornets ace. Tight game when J.D. Drew homers (1) for 2 runs in the 5th making it 3-2 Hampton. Gas Hornets tie it in the bottom half only to see Hampton pull ahead in the 6th. But Manhattan plates single runs in the 8th and then work a small ball situation in the 9th with Cordero doubling in the game winner, 5-4 Gas Hornets. Garrett Anderson again homers (2) for Manhattan. Final 5-4 Manhattan WP Kim (1-0) LP Jeremy Affeldt, BS Jason Grimsley (1) |
Game #3: | Not much drama here, Gas Hornets take a 2-0 lead into the 6th then score 4. Hampton plates 2 in the 7th, but Manhattan gets 2 in their half and 3 in the 8th for an 11-2 win (18 hits). Garrett Anderson adds 2 more dingers (4) with 3 rbis and 4 hits!, Derek Jeter gets 3 hits. Final 11-2 Manhattan WP Rick Reed (1-0), LP Jason Marquis (0-1) |
Game #4: | Tighter game as Shawn Chacon gets the start for Hampton and goes 7 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs. However, the Huskies only manage 1 run off the Gas Hornets mound crew – a 3rd inning rbi SF from Rob Mackowiak. All 3 Gas Hornets runs come on solo homers from Ray Durham (1), Tino Martinez (1) and yup – Garrett Anderson (5)! Final 3-1 Manhattan WP John Halama (1-0) S Kim (1) |
Game #5: | Nail biter until the 8th! Score is 1-1 through 6 thanks to a tying homer (1) from Scott Hatteberg in the 6th. Jeremy Affeldt was going strong but an unearned run cost him the lead and the Gas Hornets score the go ahead run in the 7th! Turns out the 5 runs they score in the 8th weren’t needed as Wakefield and 2 relievers keep them off the scoreboard after that 6th inning home run. And no – Garrett Anderson didn’t hit a homer in this one – actually went hitless. But Josh Phelps (recently acquired from Hampton) did homer (1). Most of the offense came from the bottom of the lineup in this game. Final 7-1 Manhattan WP Tim Wakefield (2-0) LP Affeldt (0-2) |
Series Summary: | Gas Hornets grab a 5-0 series sweep and enjoy the week of batting practice pitchers (except Zito). But now they head to Flora-Bama for 6 games including the double header at the end of the series. We do however have a couple of candidates for Player of the Week: Derek Jeter .471/.565/.765 OPS 1.220 1 HR, 7 rbis 4 runs Garrett Anderson .429/.429/1.143 OPS 1.571 5 Hrs, 6 rbis 7 runs |
