Baltimore Blue Crabs @ Hampton Huskies

Series Preview: Baltimore hopes to keep the early-season success going and Hampton is the perfect place to do that after opening the season getting swept by the Gas Bags.
Game #1: Grade 4 Kris Benson dazzled for eight shutout innings with JD Drew blasting a 3-run shot in support as the Huskies downed the Crabs 5-0. Hampton had just four hits in the game – all of them in the four-run 5th inning.
Game #2: Barry Zito continued the dominance of the Blue Crabs and held them to four hits in eight innings as the Huskies took their second straight 5-2. Robert Fick had a monster day for Hampton with a 4/4 performance with three doubles and four RBIs with Julio Lugo chipping in with a home run. Randy Winn (2) homered for Baltimore.
Game #3: Woody Williams struck out 13 and Chipper Jones had two hits including a double and drove in two runs as Baltimore righted the ship and downed Hampton 5-2. Jimmy Rollins also drove in two runs for Baltimore and Tony Batista scored twice. Tim Worrell picked up his 2nd save of the season. Robert Fick homered and drove in two runs to give him six already in the series for Hampton in a losing effort.
Game #4: The Blue Crabs homered four times as they clubbed the Huskies’ pitching staff in a 13-5 win. Rollins (1), Winn (3), Dunn (1) and Posada (4) supplied the Crabs’ power. Robert Fick (2) and Rob Mackowiak (1) went deep for Hampton in a feeble response.
Game #5: The Crabs pounced on the feeble Hampton bullpen and scored four timed in the last two innings in a 5-2 win. Dmitri Young had three hits including two doubles and drove in two runs while Chipper Jones scored twice and drove in two on a single and two walks. Scott Hatteberg had two hits and drove in two for Hampton.
Game #6: The Crabs completed the sweep once again by gutting the Hampton pitchers in a 10-5 win which included seven runs over the 6th and 7th innings. Chipper Jones drove in four with three hits, Adam Dunn drove in two with three hits, and Tony Batista scored twice with three hits for Baltimore. Julio Lugo countered with three hits for Hampton with AJ Hinch offering a home run.
Series Summary: Scoring runs will not be a problem for Hampton this season. Keeping the opponent from scoring less than 10 runs a game may be a challenge though. Baltimore struggled early in the series but the universe regained equilibrium and came back to win the final four.

Goose eggs through 5 as SLS strikes 1st with 1 run in the 6th. It looks like the Hammerin’ time bats will be squelched the rest of the game as John Smoltz fires 2IP and no hits. Paul Shuey on for the 9th and the Mauler bats wake up to steal the game from SLS with two HRs Alfonso Soriano and Jaque Jones smacks his 1st HR and 1st RBI of the season for the walk-off win!

However, the hammerin’ time bats say not in our house and wake up after 3 straight goose egg innings by the SLS bull pen and plate 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th to regain the lead. The Mauler bull-pen by committee holds the fort as MVM adds 3 more in the bottom of the 8th for much-needed insurance. Ray King finishes the 9th to close out the deal.

Series Summary: The team from Cowtown continues to play like cow patties as their losing streak extends to 9 games to start the season. Kevin Brown gets the teams first win in game 1 of the doubleheader but Ft. Worth blows the second game.

Manhattan Gas Hornets @ Flora-Bama Mullets

Series Preview: Only two MWWL Franchises (Winnipeg (x2) and Fort Worth) have successfully repeated as back to back champions and the odds will be stacked against Flora-Bama with a much improved Manhattan and Baltimore in the NL East and two powerhouses in the NL West.
Game #1: Morris vs. Burnett
Phelps rbi single in the 1st was erased in the bottom of the inning when Blum’s error allowed the game to be tied. Jeter singled, stole 2nd and 3rd and then came in to give Manhattan a 2-1 lead. Martinez’s solo in 4th made it 3-1. Morris took a one hitter into the 6th, but the Mullets finally figured him out and rallied for four runs and a 5-3 lead. Hammond and six other relievers combined for 4.1 shutdown innings.

Game #2: Reed vs. Lawrence
Both starters went the distance, but Reed allowed three solo homers. Lawrence tossed a complete game shutout. The Mullets 9th hitter Bell led the way going 3 for 3 with two of the three homeruns.

Game #3: Halama vs. Schilling
The 2001 MVP finally got his first homerun of the season in the 3rd to put the Mullets up 2-0. Vizquel hit a two run homer to make it 4-0 in 5th. Berkman hit his second homer of the season on his next at bat. Blum’s two run homer in the 9th broke the shutout.

Game #4: Meadows vs. Beckett
Durham lined a rbi single after Jeter walked and stole 2nd. In the 2nd, Singleton flashed the glove and the arm when he ran down a fly in the gap and then gunned Vaughn at home. Mullets got on the board in the 5th on a Vizquel solo homerun. In the bottom of the 6th, Hunter doubled and Vaughn walked forcing Manhattan to the pen. Gordon got Simon, but a batters interference loaded the bases. Gordon lost his cool and walked Vizquel forcing in a run. 2-1 Mullets. In the 8th, Phelps hit a pinch hit solo to tie it 2-2 off Hammond and then Blum hit a two run jack off Sasaki. 4-2 Manhattan. Wakefield pitched three scoreless innings for the win.

Game #5: Jarivs vs. Burnett
Stairs three run jack in the 2nd and Anderson’s solo in 4th were too much for Flora-Bama and Burnett. Mullets managed to break up the shutout but that was it.
Manhattan 6-1

Game #6: The Gas Hornets Jeter and Durham scored on an Anderson sac fly and a Stairs double in 1st. Mullets responded with a two run Piazza homer. Singleton singled, stole two bases and scored on a Kendall blooper. Mullets rallied for four in the 4th on a Vaughn two run homer, Vizquel rbi double and Berkman rbi single. In the top of the 7th, Durham took the Mullets closer Sasaki deep with a three run game tying bomb. In the bottom of 7th, Juan Gonzalez pinch hit and walked, Murray pinch ran and stole second. Hunter took 1st on an err. Echevarria came on to pinch hit and Manhattan brought in a righty. The Mullets countered instead with Kingsale who tripled in both runners. Mullets added three more runs capped by a Segui two rbi single with bases loaded.

Series Summary: Flora-Bama edged out the series victory 4-2, but it could have been 5-1 if they hadn’t blown the late lead in game four. Vizquel was the player of the series with outstanding glove work and timely hits all series.
