Valdosta Bombers @ Danbury Mad Hatters

Series Preview: Danbury waiting to watch college basketball.
Series Summary: Valdosa takes 4 of 6.

California Quakes @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: The Quakes visit the Hounds to finish out the season. Standings are pretty much set, but one big question remains: will Bonds get to 73 homers???? He starts the series with 69, so the odds are not in his favor.
Game #1: The Hounds score early and often on Willie Blair, scoring 4 in the first and 5 in the fourth and race out to a 13-4 victory. Bonds DOES get a homer in this one, giving him 70 on the season. Luis Gonzalez adds a grand slam for his 42nd home run on the season.

WP: Burkett (19-9)
LP: Blair (2-3)

Game #2: Bonds delivers again in this one, hitting homer #71 in a 9-7 Hounds victory. This was a close one, but the Castle Rock bullpen pitched well, giving up just one run in four innings of relief.

WP: DeJean (5-4)
LP: Bacsik (1-2)
S: Benitez (9)

Game #3: No homer for Bonds in this one, although Mark Sweeney gets one for the Quakes. But, that is the only run that California scored, as the Hounds have 15 hits and 5 walks in a 13-1 victory. Bonds has now reached base in 65 straight games and they actually stopped the game to congratulate him with fireworks, which was something I had not seen before.

WP: Carpenter (8-7)
LP: Dessens (7-10)

Game #4: Four players homer for Castle Rock, but not Bonds. Castle Rock does now have four players with over 100 RBI as Gonzalez (158), Bonds (147), Sweeney (127) and Dye (108) lead this potent offense. Gonzalez gets homer #43. The Hounds race out to a 9-3 lead in this one and hold on for a 9-7 victory.

WP: Pettitte (15-10)
LP: Jones (3-17)
S: Benitez (10)

Game #5: The Hounds hit 6 doubles and Bonds adds his 72nd homer as Castle Rock comes back from a 6-1 deficit to win 11-6. Edgardo Alfonzo gets his 19th homer for California and Ichiro is up to 74 steals and 85 RBI. But, the Quakes pen can’t handle the Hounds offense and the Castle Rock pen provides 3.2 scoreless innings.

WP: DeJean (6-4)
LP: Benes (2-14)

Game #6: It all comes down to Game 162, as Bonds is looking to match his 2001 homer output by stroking #73. And, HE GETS IT DONE, hitting the long ball in the fifth, cutting the California 6-0 lead in half to 6-3. Castle Rock would not stop there, as they come roaring back from the 6-0 deficit to win the game by a score of 10-7. The Quakes were clearly frustrated as both Blair and Benes get tossed and Bonds and Gonzalez both get hit twice! In the end, the Castle Rock bullpen does its job and holds on for the victory and the series sweep to end the regular season.

WP: Quantrill (7-6)
LP: James (2-5)

Series Summary: The Hounds cap off the regular season with a 6-game sweep of the Quakes. They finish the season with a 94-68 record and the Quakes are looking forward to 2002 after closing out with a 35-127 mark. Bonds matches his 2001 season exactly, hitting his 73rd homer in the final game of the season. We are hoping our hitting stays this hot for the post-season.

Hollywood Vampires @ Winnipeg Goldeyes

Series Preview: Hollywood in first place needed 2 wins to reach 100 and Winnipeg was starting at 52 wins hoping to add to McGwire’s likely hall of fame career.
Game #1: Hollywood 5-1 Oswalt improves to 14-2 2.76 no hitting stars.
Game #2: Hollywood 7-4 Miller wins his 14th and Foulke saves his 44th.
Game #3: Winnipeg 5 Hollywood 0 – Escobar pitches a gem 5 hits 10 K’s no runs in 9 innings. Ventura homers..
Game #4: Hollywood 9 Winnipeg 6 (11 innings) – Pavano upgraded thne gives up 5, Winnipeg “pen” is awful as Burnitz homers in the win.
Game #5: Hollywood 6 Winnipeg 1 – Glavines was nto a good grade 13 as he ends 9-13 4.11 era as Kapler hits a grand slam and Perez wins to improve to 6-6.
Game #6: Winnipeg goes nuts on fan day to reach 54 wins as they hit 5 homers everett (2), Ventura, and McGwire and O’Neill final MWWL games hit homers. McGwire finishes with a hall of fame worthy 523 homers and a career .975 OPS!
Series Summary: Winnipeg finish’s with 54 wins worst in the NL Hollywood finishes a NL second best 102 wins taking the division. Player of the week only Escobar 5 hitter 10 K games seems worthy. Ventura and Everett hit 3 homers but not much average, Hollywood used everyone and didn’t role many 66’s so no standouts.
Winnipeg ends a nightmare year as they start to rebuild after being a contender for many years with stars like Paul O’Neill, and Mark McGwire retiring.
Good luck to Hollywood as thier young star pitching leads them into the playoffs hoping for glory.

Flora-Bama Mullets @ Hampton Huskies

Series Preview: Flora-Bama Mullets tooling up for the playoffs while the Hampton Huskies dream of ping pong balls.
Game #1: Johnson vs. Chen
Mullets pounded Chen and then Mahomes for an easy win. Giambi worked a two rbi single off Johnson in the 4th that briefly made it a one run game before things got ugly. Fick’s two run
homer of Flora-Bama’s pen was too late to help much.
Flora-Bama 10-5
W – Johnson 26-3
L – Chen 6-18
Game #2: Schilling vs. Garcia
Drew took Schilling deep in the 1st for the Huskies. Mullets responded with homers from
Liefer in 2nd and Gonzalez in 4th. Kennedy’s rbi single in the top of the 7th was matched by Fick’s homer in bottom of the 7th. In the 8th, Garica finally ran out of gas and gave up a two rbi double to Perez. Schilling struckout the side in the 8th and the offense added four more in the 9th.
Flora-Bama 9-2
W -Schilling 20-12
L – Garcia 14-10
Game #3: Person vs. Hermanson
Hampton made the most of two walks to start the 4th and scored two runs on one hit. In the
7th, the Mullets tied it on a little league homer and a couple of doubles. Hermanson left in the
7th, but Persons pitched through the 9th. Mullets loaded the bases in the top of the 10th and scored one run on a Rios sac fly rbi. Sasaki closed out the 10th for the win.
FNA 3-2 10 INN
W – Person 20-8
L – Rijo 1-3
S – Sasaki #22
Game #4: Springer vs. Drew
The teams combined for 23 hits, 8 homeruns and 16 runs. Unfortunately, all but two of the
hits came from Flora-Bama. Piazza hit three homeruns and Hunter had two homeruns to lead the Mullets.
FNA 16-0
W – Springer 2-1
L – Drew 0-1
Game #5: Johnson vs. Zito
Lee’s rbi double in 1st gave Hampton the early lead. Berkman hit a two run homer in 3rd and the Mullets added three more in the 6th on doubles by Berkman, Piazza and Segui. Then a additional 10 more runs in the 9th.
Flora-Bama 15-2
W – Johnson 27-3
L – Zito 17-14
Game #6: Schilling vs. Chen
Sierra took Chen deep with a Baltimore special in the 1st. Berkman and Perez added rbi singles in 4th. Lugo’s two rbi single in the 7th brought Hampton within two runs. In the bottom of the 9th, the Huskies put two runners on but Hairston hit into a game ending double play. Schilling picked up his 300th strikeout of the season in five innings of work.
FNA 5-3
W – Schilling 21-12
L – Chen 6-19
S – Sasaki #23
Series Summary: Hampton’s NL East struggles continued as Flora-Bama got the series sweep. Hampton finished with a very respectable 45-51 record when not playing in the East.

Here’s to hoping that trend continues in 2002.

Monroeville Maulers @ Chicago Demolition

Series Preview: The highly anticipated AL Central Division Championship showdown between the Visiting Monroeville “Hammering Time” Maulers and the Chicago “Wrecking Ball” Demolition! The Maulers Rambler bus line is making the 7 hour trek to the Windy City bringing in droves of the Mauler Faithful to cheer on their favorite players and hopefully their first MWWL division championship! Stray was graciously accommodating towards playing this series live via Team Viewer but asked me to do the write-up. We are ready for the first pitch, PLAY BALL!!
Game #1: Jon Lieber 17-7 vs Rolando Arrojo 9-6

An early 2-1 lead for the Demolition on a Shannon Stewart double and Carlos Delgado goes yard, as nerves get the best of Mauler Ace Jon Lieber but he works out of the situation and limits the damage. The Mauler bats wake up in the 4th and hammer out 10 runs in the next 5 innings in part on a Troy Glaus solo shot and a 4-5 day for 1st round draft pick Einar Diaz. This relieves Lieber’s stress as he gains composure to complete the game shutting down the mighty Demolition lineup the rest of the way for a complete game victory. Maulers hammer out 14 hits for an impressive Game 1 victory and a 14 game winning streak! Maulers take over first place in the AL Central! MVM 11-2

CHI:

Game #2: Jason Schmidt 13-8 vs Darryl Kile 19-8

The Maulers provide an early lead for Jason Schmidt and he draws strength on that to step up and work his way out of early jams. The Demolition spray the ball around a bit but squanders the opportunities LOB 12, as Schmidt manages to save face striking out CHI hitters in key situations totaling 10Ks overall while only surrendering 1-run a solo shot by Bobby Higginson. Bob File is on for a 1,2,3 9th and his 20th save of the season. Darryl Kile hoping for win #20 falls short as his offense fails him but does an admiral job keeping the game from getting out of hand as the Maulers pound out 12 hits but LOB 12 as well. Maulers now have a 15 game winning streak and a 2 game lead over CHI! The Magic number is down to 1!
MVM 4-1.

Tom Clark 2-3 BB-1

Game #3: Willis Roberts 10-6 vs David Cone 8-3

The Maulers can feel the enthusiasm in the air from the traveling fanfare as a win this game would clinch the division even if CHI takes the next 3 in a row as MVM would have the head-to-head tie breaker. Willis Roberts on the hill has done an admirable job this season but the Demolition had other plans jumping out to a 2-0 lead as Phil Nevin starts the scoring with his 50th dinger of the season and RBI 136! Willis Roberts gains composure and works out of the first inning jam keeping the game close. The hammering time lineup comes through in the top of the 2nd to support their team mates effort plating 4 runs off of starter David Cone who surrenders a 1 out double to Alfonso Soriano and then loads the bases with back-to-back walks the latter a bean ball to Einar Diaz to send a message but thankfully Diaz is ok and trots down to first base. The hits keep on coming top to bottom of the Mauler lineup as MVM builds a comfortable 11-2 lead going into the bottom of the 9th.

The Demolition make some noise in the 5th plating 1 more run but MVM Coach “Olde-Tymer” Ernie Panek wastes no time going to his star middle reliever Ramiro Mendoza, and he comes through to squelch the threat and continues with 3.2IP of excellent relief. Bob File on for the 9th but not having his best stuff surrenders 3 runs then finally gets out of the jam as the Demolition make a never say die effort but the expansive 11-2 MVM lead was too much to overcome in just one inning. The Monroeville Maulers win the AL Central division crown! Another double-digit hit parade plating 11 runs and a 16 game winning streak! MVM 11-6.

Game #4: Brian Tollberg 8-7 vs Pedro Martinez 14-3

With the division title in hand the Maulers still trying for a win give some of the the regulars one more start to keep’em fresh heading into the playoffs. The Demolition with “El Grande” on the mound allows 2 runs early but then shuts down the hammering time bats over 5IP and is relieved of his duties in the 6th. The Demolition bats finally wake up and the wrecking ball wreaks havoc against #4 starter Brian Tollberg while blasting out 16 runs on 22 hits against him and the Mauler mop up crew. Coach Panek chalks one up for experience and calls it a day. The Maulers do lose a key utility player as Daryl Ward is injured for 22 days ouch! Rey Sanchez also tweaks his hammy and will sit the next two games but fortunately not any longer he’ll be ready for the playoffs. He is having a career year and is a key piece for the MVM starting lineup. The Demolition win this one. CHI 16-3.

MVM 3-6-0 vs CHI 16-22-0

Charlei Johnson 2-4 HR(26) RBI 3(79)
Bobby Higginson 3-5 RBI(75) RS-1

Game #5: Jim Brower 9-4 vs Roger Clemens 12-12

The Maulers rest about every starter and call upon the bench to bounce back from the last game fiasco and they do “Hammering” the “Rocket” for 4 runs through 6IP. Russ Branyan hammers out a 3-5 day with 2 homers and 5 RBIs filling in nicely for the injured Daryl Ward. Also, a stellar contribution by spot starter Jim Brower as he commands the Demolition lineup with a complete game giving the MVM bull pen rest scattering 5 hits and 11Ks allowing only 1 run. It’s official the Maulers take the division hands down without the tie breaker involved! MVM 7-1.
MVM 7-8-1 VS CHI 1-5-0

L- Roger Clemens 12-13

MVM:

CHI:
David Justice HR(9) RBI(30)

Game #6: The final game of the 2001 season and the Maulers call upon the bench once again and a young Rick Ankiel to at least keep it close and they do. But it’s a rocky start for Rick Ankiel as the Demolition light him up for 4 runs in the first two innings but he grits it out and shuts down the wrecking ball lineup the rest of the way for a complete game striking out 11 batters! The Mauler backup crew makes a gallant effort in the 8th inning as Rob Nen surrenders a 3-run HR to Wiki Gonzalez almost spoiling Darryl Kile‘s bid for #20 but Billy Wagner comes to the rescue and completes 1.2IP of perfect relief with 3Ks gaining the coveted victory #20 for his teammate CHI 4-3.

MVM 3-3-1 vs CHI 4-9-1

CHI:

David Justice 2-4 RBI(31)
Roberto Alomar 1-4 HR(18) RBI 3(96)

Series Summary: MVM 39-58-3 vs CHI 30-64-3

The Maulers dominate the first 3 games of this series and waste no time to earn the AL Central division crown with a remarkable 16-game winning streak! The Mauler lineup contributed top to bottom with a different player staring in each of the victories. Not one specific player had a dominating series performance, just nicely consistent top to bottom from game to game. The Demolition offense didn’t show up until Game 4 and it was too late. Staying humble as this is an appreciated accomplishment but now on to the playoffs and focusing on getting the coveted MWWL Championship trophy. A grueling task indeed as the playoff field will be a tough one, especially with the possibility of facing the reining champs once again along with other well-deserving competitors across the field.

Notables:
CHI: Darryl Kile gains victory #20. Phil Nevin hits Homerun #50.
MVM: A team effort with timely and clutch hitting coupled with solid pitching as Jon Lieber(7), Jason Schmidt(10), Jim Brower(11) and Rick Ankiel(11) hurl a combined 39Ks.

Coach Panek got some playing time in this season for a few players in their last year most notably:
Bobby Bonilla
Harold Baines
Bernard Gilkey

Corktown Bootleggers @ Houghton Penguins

Game #1: Houghton wins a close game, 4-2, over Corktown giving Buehrle his 19th win.
Game #2: Corktown scores 3 runs in the top of the 9th off Houghton’s closer, Dotel, to send the game into extra innings. Houghton ends up winning the game in 13 innings, 6-5.

Rivera went 2-5 with a double, homerun and 3 RBIs.

Michigan Marauders @ Gladstone Gladiators

Series Preview: Gladstone is looking to wrap up the NL Central Division title, while Michigan is playing out the string and looking ahead to next season.
Game #1: Bernie Williams opened the game with a leadoff homer in the top of the first. Gladstone answered back in the bottom of the frame with 3 unearned runs, and never looked back as they rang up 7 more runs along the way, while Michigan scored a couple of late meaningless runs. Mark Loretta was injured and looks to be out of commission for 2 weeks.
FINAL SCORE: GLG 10 – MIC 3
Game #2: Gladstone opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st with a pair, then tacked on single runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th, and then another pair in the 7th. Michigan only managed 1 in the 6th. Gladstone clinched the division title with this one.
FINAL SCORE: GLG 7 – MIC 1
Game #3: Gladstone again scored in the 1st, Michigan tied it in the 3rd, then Gladstone scored in the 7th in this pitchers’ duel.
FINAL SCORE: GLG 2 – MIC 1
Game #4: Breaking the pattern, nobody scored until the top of the 3rd, when Michigan went ahead 1-0. Gladstone answered back with a run in the 4th, then took the lead with 3 in the 5th. But Michigan scrappily fought back and tied it in the 6th, then scored in the top of the 9th and held Gladstone off to win their first of the series.
FINAL SCORE: MIC 5 – GLG 4
Game #5: Bob Boone hit a 2 run shot off Ron Villone in the top of the 1st, then hit a bases-loaded double in the top of the 2nd to add 3 more RBIs. Gladstone got back 1 in the bottom of the 2nd, then pulled Villone in favor of Hector Carrasco to start the 3rd. Carrasco kept things quiet for 3 innings before giving way to Chad Zerbe, who held off the Marauders for the 6th and 7th innings. In the bottom of the 7th, Gladstone exploded for 4 runs to tie the game. Zerbe gave way to Lou Pote for the 8th, and held up his end of the deal. Mike Lincoln came on in the top of the 9th, and also kept Michigan off the board. Henry Blanco led off the bottom of the 9th and walked it off with a blast over the wall in left center.
FINAL SCORE: GLG 6 – MIC 5
Game #6: Final game of the season, with Gladstone tuning up for the playoffs. Gladstone scores 2 in the bottom of the 1st, Michigan replies with 1 in the 2nd, Gladstone answers back with another 1 in the bottom, then Michigan scores its final run in the top of the 3rd. Gladstone added an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th, and that was all she wrote.
FINAL SCORE: GLG 4 – MIC 2
Series Summary: Gladstone wraps up the division title in style with a 5 – 1 series win.
