Corktown Bootleggers @ Iowa Giants

Series Preview: Corktown Bootleggers come to Iowa leading American League Eastern Division while Iowa holds last place in that division.
Game #1: Bootleggers take Game 1 5-0 Brain Jordan three run shot Alex Rodriques homer and S Lowe goes 7 2/3 1 hit no runs.
Game #2: Jason Gambi 2-4 3 rbi B Jordan 2-5 4 rbi, Grland 6 innings 4 hits 1 run Giants come back make it interesting but lose 7-6.

Baltimore Blue Crabs @ Hampton Huskies

Game #1: Ryan Dempster and company held the Huskies to just three hits in an easy 7-1 as the fine display of defence by both teams began. Baltimore committed two errrors in the game, but it didn’t matter as the Huskies bats were nowhere to be found. Posada had two hits including his 18th dinger and collected three RBIs.
Game #2: Shinjo’s double off Mike Stanton in the bottom of the 11th gave Hampton a 3-2 win. Chipper Jones drove in all the runs for Baltimore with Derrek Lee driving in the other two for Hampton. A patry one error apiece in this game plus a passed ball.
Game #3: Two more errors and another passed ball but the story of the day was actually a rare offensive outburst by Hampton as they cranked out 18 hits against Baltimore pitching in an 11-5 win. Steve Cox and Joe Oliver, in their swansong, had three hits for the Huskies as did JD Drew. Curtis Pride and Jerry Hairston Jr each also had three RBIs. Dmitri Young smacked a three-run homer for Baltimore with Chris Truby getting the only four-bagger for Hampton.
Game #4: Another sloppy game with three errors, but it was really Tim Hudson that stood out and baffled the Huskies for seven innings as the Blue Crabs took it 9-3. MArk McLemore doubled and tripled and drove in five runs for Baltimore with Sean Casey and Randy Winn going deep.
Game #5: The Amazing Woody Williams blanked the Huskies 5-0 in a three-hitter. MArk Quinn homered for Baltimore while Mark McLemore stayed hot with two hits, two walks, and two RBIs.
Series Summary: The Blue Crabs are too much for the Huskies as Baltimore takes 3 of 5.

Series Preview: The Maulers 94-57, 1GB division leading CHI., coming home after sweeping Southlake last week. A road and home series with the Stealers and MVM looking to tie, take over or at least stay within 1GB of division leading Chicago for the final series of the season on the road against the Demolition for the division crown!
Game #1: Tim Redding 1-10 vs Jon Lieber 17-7

The Maulers “hammerin’ time” bats pound SSS starter Tim Redding for 7 runs in the first two innings on a Todd Hollingsworth 2-run HR, and then in the bottom of the 2nd a bases loaded triple by Alfonso Soriano. Ace Jon Lieber starts strong but tires early in the 4th allowing back to back singles by Fernandez and Zielle, then a wild pitch and a BB to Payton! Coach Panek has seen enough he isn’t taking any chances and takes advantage of a well-rested bull pen sending Lieber to an early shower with the bases loaded so he’s rested for next week’s showdown with CHI. Ramiro Mendoza arrives with his stink face on and puts out the fire leaving the bases loaded! Maulers add two more for insurance as the Stealers start to chip away in the late innings with Dan Wheeler trying to mop up for MVM as David Eckstein doubles and Jeff Conine ropes a single to score him. Then Marlon Anderson hits a hard grounder to shortstop scoped by Felipe Lopez but he throws wide to first, followed by a single from Tony Fernandez and all of a sudden, it’s 9-4, so Bob File is ushered in for 1.1IP of relief and MVM makes defensive substitutions with rested starters to squelch the threat. Maulers take Game 1, 9-4.

Game #3: Jimmy Haynes 6-11 vs Willis Roberts 9-6

A battle of the Grade D pitchers, and the Maulers resting starters in anticipation for next weeks showdown in Chicago. Both starters goose eggs through 5 and Southlake’s Shawn Wooten homers for just the 2nd hit of the game breaking the ice giving SSS a 1-0. But the Maulers answer in the bottom half with a hammering time Homer of their own from Jose Hernandez 1-1. Willis Roberts continues to blank the Stealers and then the MVM bats wake up with two more HRs and plating 5 runs total for the victory.

Battle of the Grade C hurlers. 2-1 Maulers after 6 as both pitchers are keeping it close. The Maulers add 2 insurance runs in the 7th and the bull pen of Bob File and Ramiro Mendoza hold the fort. As MVM gets rest for key starters and the bench comes through in the clutch to support a fine pitching performance.

Both teams plate 2 runs early then it’s goose eggs until the bottom of the 9th where the Maulers prevail with a walk off win completing the series sweep. Julian Tavarez is injured for 5 days in the 4th but Darren Oliver saves the day with 3.1 scoreless innings and Ramiro Mendoza follows suite to gain the victory.

The Maulers dominated Southlake in all facets of games 1-3, then held on for the final two in close fashion. Maulers are on an incredible 14-game win streak as the late season schedule played right into their hands. Hopefully, the trend doesn’t pitter out next week against the mighty Demolition, setting the stage for a terrific showdown in Chicago!

Manhattan Gas Hornets @ Flora-Bama Mullets

Series Preview: Flora-Bama and Manhattan head south for the second half of their 11 straight games.
Game #1: Manhattan sent nine to plate in the first and scored four runs. Schilling rebounded to pitch a couple solid innings before turning it over to the pen in the 5th. Flora-Bama chipped away at the lead with a run in the 2nd and then two runs in the 4th led by a Piazza solo homerun. Wakefield induced a couple double play balls to work out of jams and turned it over to Nunez with a 4-3 lead. Nunez allowed a RBI single to Olerud, but limited any further damage. 4-4. Singleton took Van Poppel deep in top of the 8th to put the Gas Hornets back up. In the bottom of the 8th, Shaw came on and gave up a solo to Rios that tied it. He got the next two outs before allowing two hits and double to Segui that made it 7-5 Mullets. Sasaki closed out the 9th.

Game #2: Mullets get a couple in the 1st on doubles from Rowand, Gonzalez and Segui, but that was all Reed would allow over eight innings. Person went seven and only allowed a solo homer to Jeter in the 6th. In the 8th, Manahattan loaded the bases, but Singleton just missed a grand slam off Nasty Boy Charlton. In the 9th, Latham singled and pinch hitter Bubba Trammel launched a go ahead two run homer with two outs of Sasaki. Blum then doubled, but Zambrano came on to prevent any further damage. Kim closed out the bottom of the 9th for the save.

Game #3: Tino showed Randy he wasn’t afraid of facing a lefty with a solo shot in the 2nd. Coomer turned a Rios double into a run with a fielding error that led to some choice words from Morris. Johnson left after five innings with the 1-1 tie preventing any decision for him. In the bottom of the 6th, Flora-Bama loaded the bases with no outs. Morris threw a wild pitch that allowed a run, but then got Piazza and the next two hitters to pop up. 2-1. In the 7th, Morris finally gave up some actually earned runs when he allowed a two out rbi double to Segui. Mesa recorded the final out for a cheap save.

Game #4: An Olerud rbi double and a Piazza two run homer made it 3-0 in the 1st. Schilling tossed five shutout innings. In the 6th, Manhattan worked the bases loaded off Charlton, but Mesa came on early and got Stairs to pop up. Sparks left after seven innings and Nunez pitched a quiet 8th. Zambrano recorded the final two outs in the 9th.

Game #5: Another pitching duel with both starters working into the 9th. In the 1st, Berkman doubled in a run to give the Mullets an early lead. Anderson knocked a solo homerun off Beckett in 2nd to tie it. Beckett was dealing until he briefly lost his control and issued four straight walks and a double to Singlton in the 5th. He got his control back and pitched until he finally got tired in the middle of the 9th. Maduro just got stronger as the game went on giving up only 2 hits in the final 8 innings.

Series Summary: Another tight back and forth series this week. Manhattan won the overall season matchup with a 12-10 record, but Flora-Bama secured the NL East division with the 3-2 series win. Manhattan locked in the #1 wild card seed giving them homefield for all three potential wild card games.
