Hollywood Vampires @ Long Beach Titans

Series Summary: Hollywood takes 4 of 6 from Long Beach.

Chicago Demolition @ Harper Woods Expos

Series Summary: Chicago Demolition Splits the series with the Harper Woods Expos, 3 games each.

Monroeville Maulers @ Southlake Stealers

Series Preview: Monroeville hopes to keep pace with Chicago as they travel to Southlake. The Stealers are on autopilot for the rest of the season as they look toward 2002.
Game #1: Tavarez vs Finley.

Southlake gets aggressive early. A double by Owens followed by a single from Zeile brings the first run across the plate. A single by Beltran followed by a steal of second and third put him just 90 feet away. A Brady Clark squeeze makes it 2-0 after 1.

A Wilson single, Zeile Double, and Clark single would extend the lead to 4-0 through three innings.

The lead was short lived as Vlad the Destroyer would lead off the 4th with a solo shot. Glaus would follow with a double and come home on a Mientkiewicz single making it 4-2.

Monroeville would put up 5 in the 6th as Hernandez hit a two run shot and the Stealers committed 2 errors leading to 4 of the runs being unearned.

Southlake would continue to hit against Tavarez but some poor baserunning left them scoreless throughtout the rest of the game.

Final Score 10-4 MVM
WP: Tavarez 15-10
LP: Finley 5-17
Big Boy Restaurants’ Big Boy of the Game: Vlad Guerrero 2/5, 1 Run, 2 RBIs, 1 HR

Game #2: Monroeville Ace Jon Leiber vs. Haynes

Again Southlake jumps out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Eckstein and Beltran hit back to back solo shots.

Jones would halve the lead with a solo shot in the 3rd. The Miners would tie it on a single from Mientkiewicz to score Catalanotto.

The Stealers retake the lead in the bottom of the 4th with some small ball thanks to a Nunez bunt to score Macias.

MVM would score for the third consecutive inning when Vlad brings home Rey Sanchez with a single. They would add another one the 6th when Jones would single home Ward who doubled with two outs. Then add yet another one for their fifth consecutive inning of plating a run on a Catalanotto solo shot.

The streak of consecutive innings scoring one run ended there, but they did add 3 in the 9th to finish off the scoring.

Final Monroeville 8-4
WP: Leiber 17-7
LP: Haynes 6-11
S: Mendoza 12
Big Boy Restaurants’ Big Boy of the Game: Catalanotto 2/3, 2 Run, 2 RBIs, 1 HR

Game #3: Roberts versus the bullpen for Southlake

Once again Southlake would score in the first on a Brady Clark single. Like Monroeville the day before they would score a single run in 4 consecutive innings to lead 4-0.

Cunnane got the ball first and went 2.2 of solid pitching. He would be followed by White and Speier who got the job done as well. Unfortunately, when the Stealers went to Hasegawa for the 6th and 7th it would lead to 4 Miner runs and a tie game.

It would stay that way until a Catalanotto sac fly scored pinch runner Mateo in the 11th to give Monroeville a tough 5-4 victory.

WP: Mendoza 7-3
LP: Fetters 1-3
Big Boy Restaurants’ Big Boy of the Game: Catalanotto 1/4, 1 Run, 2 RBIs, Game winning Sac

Game #4: Tollberg vs Adams

Adams has been a hard luck case since joining the Stealers. His record sits at 6-10 with the Stealers but leads the team in Quality Starts.

Up 4-2 in the 8th it looked like Adams may have things go his way. However, he would load up the bases with no outs bringing in Leskanic. Curt would walk Varitek making it 4-3 Stealers. Ward would pop up and Jones would fail to get the suicide squeeze down. Leaving two on with two outs. Just when Adams could think of taking a breath, Jones made up for his miscue and doubled home both runners giving MVM the lead. Lopez would unleash a tape measure bomb to make it 7-4 sending Adams to the clubhouse where he immediately destroyed a restroom.

Southlake played small ball in the 9th to bring the score to 7-6 with runners on 2nd and 3rd with just one out. Marlon Anderson would try to squeeze home the tying run. Instead he popped it up to Mientkiewicz, who would double up Nunez coming down the line to end the game.

Anderson went up the the clubhouse and having seen Adams had destroyed the restoom he immediately destroyed the showers. Both guys should expect a heafty bill in their lockers from Clubhouse Manager Frankie Boyd tomorrow.

Final Score 7-6 MVM
WP: Tollberg 8-7
LP: Leskanic 3-5
S: Reyes 1
Big Boy Restaurants’ Big Boy of the Game: Lopez 1/1, 1 Run, 2 RBIs, Game winnining PH HR

Game #5: Tavarez vs Schoeneweis

For the 5th consecutive game Southlake would score in the first. And for the 5th consecutive game they would fail to win the game.

In game one of the doubleheader they would use the bullpen masterfully and take a 4-3 lead into the 9th. Schoeneweis, Smoltz and Glover would control the game, giving way to Mahay to close it out.

In a lefty / lefty matchup, Mahay would walk Mientkiewicz to lead off the 9th. Shuey would come in to face the righty Diaz and hit him in the wrist. After getting the next batter out, Monroeville would call on Catalanotto to PH. Sarge would counter with the lefty Gabe White.

Frank would work a walk against Gabe loading the bases with just one out. With the lefty Branyan at the plate and not having good wheels, the Stealers played in double play depth. White did his job getting Branyan to ground to Todd Zeile for what should have been the game ending DP. However, instead it bounced off his glove into right field scoring two runs and breaking the hearts of the Stealers.

Final Score 5-4 MVM
WP: File 3-1
LP: Shuey 1-4
Big Boy Restaurants’ Big Boy of the Game: File 2.0 IPs, 0 Runs, stranded 1 Inherited runner

Game #6: Monroeville would go to Oliver looking for the sweep while Southlake would counter with Finley.

Finley either gets shelled early or goes the full nine innings in what has been a crazy season for him. In the Series finale he would go all 9 scattering 7 hits and striking out 6 Miners. What should have been an easy win like so many other of his complete games, the Stealers stunk up the joint with 4 errors, giving Finley his 6th complete game loss of the year. Not that Finley was blameless as he had 2 of the 4 errors.

Rey Sanchez who had 3 hits against Finley added two more this game along with getting on base thanks to a Finley error that scored the first of three runs in the 8th inning.

Final Score: MVM 6-3
WP: Oliver 10-7
LP: Finley 5-18
S: Mendoza 13
Big Boy Restaurants’ Big Boy of the Game: Sanchez 2/4, 2RBI plus one run scored on an error

Series Summary: With the series sweep Monroeville has won 9 in a row to cut the lead to 1 game in the Central Division. MVM will host Southlake for a series before traveling to Chicago for a season ending series that should determine the Division Championship.

Valdosta Bombers @ Michigan Marauders

Hampton Huskies @ Baltimore Blue Crabs

Series Preview: N.L. East “also-rans” Hampton (55-90) and Baltimore (75-70) square off.
Game #1: Behind a Barry Zito 2-hit, complete game, the Huskies squeak by in the opener.

HUSKIES 2 / 8 / 2
CRABS 1 / 2 / 1
WP – Zito (17-12)
LP – Santos (1-6)

Game #2: J.D. Drew clubbed a 3-run homerun, part of a 4-run Huskie first inning, but Baltimore would battle back and prevail in game 2, 10-7. Todd Hundley was the improbable offensive standout for the Crabs, with 3 hits, including a homerun, and 3 RBIs. Jimmy Rollins scored twice and stole a pair of bases.

HUSKIES 7 / 11 / 1
CRABS 10 / 13 / 0
WP – Dempster (5-6)
LP – Hermanson (4-14)
S – Farnsworth (19)

Game #3: Once again Baltimore spots Hampton a 4-run lead and rallies for the victory. Tony Batista’s solo homerun off Jose Rijo in the 8th proves to be the difference.

HUSKIES 4 / 11 / 0
CRABS 5 / 9 / 1
WP – Venafro (1-1)
LP – Rijo (1-2)
S – Farnsworth (20)

Game #4: Jimmy Rollins’ 2-run homerun in the 5th was all that Baltimore could muster off Freddy Garcia. But Tim Hudson and a pair of relievers limit Hampton to a Shea Hillenbrand solo homerun, as the Crabs with their 3rd in a row.

HUSKIES 1 / 5 / 0
CRABS 2 / 3 / 1
WP – Hudson (10-18)
LP – Garcia (14-9)
S – Farnsworth (21)

Game #5: Hampton plates a run in the 10th to win game 1 of the doubleheader. The Huskies hit 3 roundtrippers in the contest (Curtis Pride, Shea Hillenbrand, Jerry Hairston JR). Chipper Jones hit his 42nd homerun of the season for Baltimore.

HUSKIES 4 / 5 / 1
CRABS 3 / 7 / 2
WP – Meacham (2-1)
LP – Swindell (1-1)

Game #6: Rickey Gutierrez had 4 hits and 3 RBIs and Shea Hillenbrand had 3 hits and 2 RBIs to lead the Huskies to the win and series split.

HUSKIES 8 / 16 / 0
CRABS 2 / 11 / 1
WP – Hermanson (5-14)
LP – Suppan (8-10)

Series Summary: Hampton comes to town, sweeps the double header and earns a series split. Jimmy Rollins and Baltimore exploited the Huskie catchers the entire series. Rollins stole 9 bases, part of 23 the Crabs swiped over the 6 games.

Iowa Giants @ Corktown Bootleggers

Series Summary: owa plays spoiler as they win 4 of 6. Corktown bats disappeared when they needed a big series.

Dondero Oaks @ California Quakes

Series Summary: Fierce division rivals, Dondero and California, split in a big series.

Fort Worth Panthers @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Summary: Fort Worth takes 4 out of 6, but Bonds is up to 68 homers.

Flora-Bama Mullets @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: N.L. East showdown – but don’t expect big fireworks. Manhattan still trying to get some usage in and we face RJ and Curt. And a player does a partial Ohtani – 3 homers in a day (so what if it’s a double header day!!).
Game #1: STOP THE PRESSES! Calvin Maduro outduels Randy Johnson in the opener even with Johnson tossing a 4 hitter. Maduro scatters 6 hits and 2 walks over 8 innings with Piazza and Gonzalez hitting back to back doubles in the 4th for the Mullets only run. A Kendall triple and Cordero double in the 3rd get Manhattan the game’s 1st run and then a Blum rare single drives in the winner in the 6th. Kim closes out the 9th.
FNA 1-6-0 LP Johnson (25-2)
MGH 2-4-2 WP Maduro (5-2) S Kim (24)
Game #2: De ja vu all over again? Sort of. But this time it’s the Mulletts on top. Olerud (double), Berkman and Piazza (rbi) start the games with hits and Rios drives in the 2nd run and Flora-Bama takes a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Singleton doubles and scores on a Stairs rbi single in the 5th. Robert Person hangs around for the 6th but leaves after that giving up 3 hits, 1 run, 4 ks. Charlton and Sasaki make it hold up and it’s another 2-1 game!
FNA 2-6-0 WP Person (19-8) S Sasaki (20)
MGH 1-5-0 LP Wakefield (8-10)
Game #3: Curt Schilling doesn’t disappoint as he goes 6.1 for the win. He does give up 3 runs on 7 hits and was behind 3-1 through 5, but his team rallies to tie in the 6th and go ahead in the 7th before he leaves. The tying blast was a 2 run Rios homer (14) in the 6th. Tying run was a Gordon WP – he hurls another in the 9th when the Mullets get an insurance run for the 5-3 win. Schillng does do some other damage as he beans Stairs who will miss 6 games (thanks to the DH at the end of the series).
FNA 5-11-0 WP Schilling (18-12) S Van Poppel (5)
MGH 3-9-0 LP Nunez (5-3) BS (1)
Game #4: Games 1 and 2 had the same scores and game 4 came close to the same score as game 3 – and again, the outcome was flipped. Gas Hornets score single runs in the 1st through 4th innings. And it might have been more if the Mullets OFers weren’t so good at cutting down runners. Juan Gonzalez with 2 assists and Torri Hunter with another. Yikes!! Rios gets a solo homer (15) in the 2nd and Bell doubles in 1 in the 7th but that’s all Steve Sparks would surrender and his 3 bullpen mates made it stand. Chris Singleton recorded 3 hits (2 doubles), rbi, 2 runs and Ray Durham matches that but just 1 double.
FNA 2- 9-1 LP Springer (1-1)
MGH 5-10-1 WP Sparks (14-6) S Kim (25)
Game #5: 1st Game of the Double Header Olerud doubles and scores on a Rios single. In the 4th, Olerud doubles in 2 more in a 3 run inning that started with a Hunter homer (22). That was all the Mullets could get off Matt Morris. Manhattan worked to match these with a big day from Tino Martinez. Solo homer (30) in the 3rd and a 3 run homer (31) in the 3rd matched those runs and then Kendall hits a solo shot in the 4th for a 5-4 Gas Hornets lead! A Garrett Anderson SF in the 8th added an insurance run and Shaw tosses a 6 out save!
FNA 4-10-1 LP Drerse (1-2)
MGH 6- 7-1 WP Morris (17-8) S Shaw (9)
Game #6: This was supposed to be a Randy Johnson/Calvin Maduro rematch – but Maduro pitched too long during the opener, so Grade 4 John Halama gets the call!
Halama was great …. until the 3rd, they he gets nailed for 4 hits and 2 runs including a Lance Berkman 2 run homer (44). Halama leaves in the 4th when the leadoff batter gets on. Berkman homers again (45) in the 5th (off Mark Leiter – who was obtained from the Mullets! – hmmm). Meanwhile, Randy Johnson was seeking some redemption but it wasn’t easy going. He gives up 2 homers, 5 hits, 2 walks and 6 runs (5 earned)!! Manhattan scores 3 in the 2nd, 1 more in the 4th then single runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th. Tino Martinez gets his 3rd homer (32) of the day (and 2 more rbis – 6 on the day). Anderson (22) homers and so does Ron Coomer (13) – Coomer gets 2 rbis in the game! Add it all up, the final is 7-3 Manhattan and Johnson gets another loss. Wouldn’t want to face him in his next game – oh wait, we will, next week!!! Yikes.
FNA 3-9-1 LP Johnson (25-3)
MGH 7-7-1 WP Leiter (2-4) S Kim (26) what, Leiter beats his old team?
Series Summary: So strange thing happens we win the series 4-2 and beat RJ twice!! Expect next week to be pretty much the reverse of this as Mgr Billy Walker has a tough time replicating Mgr Billy Schindel – and expect Mgr Douglas to outshine MGR Perranoski3. Plus – payback is a trip to the beach – NOT.

Danbury Mad Hatters @ Gladstone Gladiators

Series Preview: First place Gladstone hosts last place Danbury.
Series Summary: Gladstone wins 5 of 6.

DeWitt Tigers @ Houghton Penguins

Series Summary:  The Tigers take 4 of 6 fromt he hosting Penguins.
