Series Preview: Week 16 Maulers in back-to-back home series see the first-place Castle Rock Hounds come to town hoping to sniff out a series win. The Maulers need at least a split and hopefully, a series win to keep the heat on division-leading CHI.
Game #1: 3-2 MVM early on then both starters settle down until the 7th when CRH plates two for the lead albeit short lived as the Maulers hammering time answers loud and clear with another HR in the bottom of the 7th (3 total in the game) and plating 2 runs for the lead that Bob File protects with 2 innings of effective relief for Sv-11.

Game #3: The Hounds frustrated from game 2 start off with a bang plating 3 runs off of MVM ace Jason Schmidt, a conference at the mound settles Schmidt down and he gets out of a hot kitchen to keep the game within reach. And that is exactly what his lineup does hammering out 4 runs in the bottom of the first and that folks is the tale of this story. Goose eggs the rest of the way as Jason Schmidt gets a CG victory after a rocky start. An unfortunate turn of events for CRH dropping their 3rd straight in this series.

Game #4: The Maulers bats top to bottom have finally come alive on a consistent basis the last two weeks but also referring specifically too Vladimir Guerrero and Troy Glaus and when the dynamic duo is on fire it’s fireworks for the fans! MVM plates 3 in the first on back to back blasts by Guerrero and Glaus. CRH plates 1 run on a Barry Bonds solo shot off of Julian Tavarez who for once has good stuff and gives the Maulers a solid 5 innings turning the game over to Jim Brower who finishes out the remaining 4IP for his first save the year as the Maulers provide 3 more runs in support to complement his 4IP no hit performance. A combined 3-hitter for the MVM pitching staff as they continue to baffle the Hounds lineup.

Game #5: The Hounds have had enough and blast MVM starter Willis Roberts for 5 runs in the first sending him to a really early shower. Mike MacDougal on to mop up and hopefully keep it close starts out rocky giving up two runs then shuts down the Hounds the rest of the way. The Maulers still remind CRH that they haven’t gone completely silent hammering out 3-HRs, for 3-runs all being solo shots didn’t do more than just make some noise as the Hounds hold on for their first victory of the series as ace John Burkett scatters 7 hits overall but doesn’t quite make a CG as Joel Pinero is called upon for the final out in the 9th.

Game #6: 5-2 Hounds after 5 as CRH chips away scoring runs 4 innings in a row. The Maulers tie the game at 5 each and then the hammering time bats explode for 7 runs in the bottom of the 8th. CRH makes a gallant effort in the top of the 9th plating 4 runs but the gap was to wide and finally Bob File is called upon to get the final out. A total of 10 pitchers used between the teams. However, a costly loss for MVM as a key piece to the Mauler offensive attack Frank Catalanotto is lost to injury for 7 days.

Highlight Jon Lieber a 2-hit CG gem in game 2. MVM takes the series 5-1 and continues to challenge the Demolition for the division lead.

Hollywood Vampires @ Baltimore Blue Crabs

Series Summary: Baltimore enters the series with a 2-game lead over Hollywood for the N.L.’s final wild card spot. Hollywood then promptly outclasses the Crabs using a dominating bullpen and potent lineup to win 5 of 6.

Iowa Giants @ Southlake Stealers

Series Preview: Iowa has been playing well, winning at a .500 clip the last twelve games. Southlake has raised the red flag.
Game #1: Finley stunk last time out meaning he should be brilliant and he is. He gets touched for two runs in the first, but settles down to go the distance. In his 6th complete game of the year he gives up just the two runs on six hits while striking out seven. However, in his previous 5 complete games he had only won 3 of them. Today would not be his fourth as Sele would scatter 8 hits and yield only 1-unearned run going the distance himself.

Final Score:  Iowa 2 – Southlake 1

Game #2: Anything you can do, I can do better — a musical chorus and a direct quote from Greg Maddux, as he too goes 9 innings giving up just 2 hits and on unearned run.

Final Score:  Iowa 3 – Southlake 1

Game #3: Liddle would not carry the Iowa tradition of destroying Southlake as the Stealers hit him early and often, chasing him in the 3rd inning. However, Manager Billy Martin would leave Haynes in too long as the Giants chipped away and finally capped the day with an 8-5 victory.

Final Score:  Iowa 8 – Southlake 5

Game #4: Schoeneweis would last just 1/3rd of an inning giving up 3 runs, but then his prayers were answered and the rains came pouring down. The boys in blue called the game early and it will be made up at a later date.

Result Rain-out

Game #5: Neither team wanted this game. Glover got the starting nod for Southlake and promptly gave up 4 in the first inning. Davis for the Giants got lit up for 5 in the second inning.

Things would settle down and Southlake would take a one run lead into the 8th. With a runner on second they asked Nen for a 6 out save. The first man he faced bunted back to him. He looked the runner back and promptly threw it away into rightfield to tie the game.

Lets take it to the 10th inning where Mike Fetters and Gabe White would give up 3 runs resulting in a victory for the Giants.

Final Score:  Iowa 9 – Southlake 6

Game #6: Terry Adams would be effective today giving up only 6 hits, but his streak of bad luck continued as Weaver was dominate for the Giants. Weaver would go 8.1 giving up just 2 runs on five hits. Adams finds himself with a 5 game losing streak since being brought over to be the team ace.

Final Score: Iowa 6 – Southlake 2

Series Summary: Iowa sweeps 5 games with one rain out. Greg Maddux staked a claim for Iowa’s second Pitcher of the Week award this season. With DeWitts tough week against Chicago, the Giants while still on the outside looking in are at least in the WC conversation.

Corktown Bootleggers @ California Quakes

Series Summary: Corktown Bootleggers take 4 of 6 from the lowly Sacramento Capitals.

Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Gladstone Gladiators

Game #1: Winnipeg looked to be cruising to an easy win, as they led 6-0 after the top of the 4th. Gladstone finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 4th, but only notched a single run. Then in the 5th, the Gladiators found their can of whoopass and tied the score. The Goldeyes reclaimed the lead with 3 in the 7th, but Gladstone wasn’t about to take that lying down and they promptly tied it back up in their half of the frame. After that, both teams’ pitchers figured out how to pitch and there was no further scoring until the 15th, when the Gladiators walked it off.
FINAL SCORE: Gladstone 10 – Winnipeg 9
Game #2: This was a quieter affair compared to the series opener, but it also went into extra frames and taxed both bullpens. Winnipeg snatched this one in the 12th and the Gladiators were apparently too tired to answer.
FINAL SCORE: Winnipeg 4 – Gladstone 3
Game #3: The Gladiators opened the scoring in the first inning with a single run, but that was all they’d end up getting, as Winnipeg fired off 5 runs to win the game.
FINAL SCORE: Winnipeg 5 – Gladstone 1
Game #4: Gladstone scored single runs in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th innings, while Winnipeg picked up a pair in the 7th. Gladstone’s bullpen held on, though, as they squared the series at 2 games apiece.
FINAL SCORE: Gladstone 3 – Winnipeg 2
Game #5: Gladstone was frustrated again, as they opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the 1st but were unable to muster any further offense while Winnipeg chipped away and wound up with 4 runs.
FINAL SCORE: Winnipeg 4 – Gladstone 2
Game #6: Winnipeg took the early lead with a pair of runs in the 2nd, but Gladstone came back and managed 7 runs while the Goldeyes only picked up 2 more along the way.
FINAL SCORE: Gladstone 7 – Winnipeg 4
Series Summary: A well-fought seesaw of a battle, ending in a 3-3 split.

Diondero Oaks @ Houghton Penguins
