Mullets had lots of coaching this week on getting their offense in sync after lackluster performance last week. Gas Hornets participated in team building sessions on overcoming mountains! ** And there is a near perfect game tossed this week…… |
| Game #1: | Nothing like a tight nail-biter to get the week started. Scoreless through 3 but top of the 4th sees David Bell launch a 2 run double off the wall giving the Mullets a nice 2-0 lead. But in the bottom half, Derek Jeter leads off with homer (10). 1 out later, Ray Durham triples and scores on a Tino Martinez groundout – tie game. A leadoff walk to Jeter and a 2 out walk to Tino in the 6th set the stage for an rbi Dave Martinez single to put Manhattan up 3-2. Person and Wakefield have been stingy, but the Gas Hornets have jumped ahead. Wakefield gets the 1st out in the 8th, then turns it over to Adrian Hernandez who gets Sierra (FO) and Hunter (GO) to end the 8th. Gas Hornets turn it over to Kim in the 9th, and he gives up a leadoff walk to the I’ll get on base almost everytime guy – David Sequi. Gipson in to PR but he’s stranded and Manhattan takes the series opener, 3-2. Only the 2nd setback for Robert Person this season. FNA 2-6-0 LP Person (11-2) MGH 3-4-0 WP Wakefield (6-2) S Kim (10) |
| Game #2: | Another nail-biter? Yes! Game starts with a Lance Berkman double and then former Gas Hornet Jon Olerud grounds him to 3rd and Mike Piazza grounds out driving him home, 1-0 top of the 1st. But in the bottom of the 2nd, Matt Stairs whales one (11) way out of the park to tie it up. Bottom of the 4th, Gas Hornets take the lead when Tino Martinez scores from 1st on a Chris Latham 2 out double (of course nailing Latham at 3rd was probably the reason Tino scored). 2-1 after 4, Manhattan. Mullets tie it up in the 5th after Adam Kennedy singles with 1 out, steals 2nd, moves to 3rd on a Perez ground out and trots home on a Lance Berkman double. 2-2. Top of the 7th, Mark Leiter comes in with 1 out against his former team. He gets Tori Hunter but Adam Kennedy reaches on an infield single. He moves to 3rd on a Neifi Perez single. And then Lance Berkman drives him home on the Mullets 2nd consecutive H&R, 3- 2 Mullets have the lead.
Norm Charlton called on in the bottom half to face the Gas Hornets lefties. Tino Martinez leads off – double! He moves to 3rd on a ground out. Josh Paul in to PH for Stairs, flies out to Reuben Sierra on a loooping fly ball. Lead foot Martinez tags, chicken arm Sierra fires, dust clears and Tino wins the race to the plate (barely), tie game 3-3 after 7! 8th inning sees Charlton in complete control for Flora-Bama and Jeff Shaw likewise for Manhattan. Then the 9th and Tom Gordon comes in! The Hampton manager could probably predict what’s about to happen! 7 batters, 1 walk, 3 hits later, the Mullets put up 3 big runs! Starts with a Segui PH double. Gipson in to PR, Hunter grounds him to 3rd, 1 down. Kennedy walks. Another H&R and again it works, 4-3 as Perez drives in the go ahead run. SF from Berkman makes it 5-3. Olerud then cracks his 2nd double and it’s 6-3! Mgr Mullets 2004 then calls on Sasaki to finish off the game, and he does for the save and the series is tied at 1 game each. |
| Game #3: | Al Leiter vs. Rick Reed 2 out Piazza double sets up a Juan Gonzalez rbi single to give the Mullets the 1-0 lead in the 1st. However a Derek Jeter walk and SB ends up tying the game on a Ray Durham rbi single. Tino Martinez singles him to 3rd. Josh Paul then hacks one into right center – it’s caught by Durham tags and scores. Garrett Anderson doubles, Martinez heads for home, Anderson to 3rd – runs scores, Anderson safe on close play at 3rd, 3-1 Manhattan. Then Graffanino makes it 4-1 when his blooper drops in. 1st inning over. Gas Hornets get another in the 2nd on a double steal that Piazza overthrows at 3rd. Down 5-1 as the 3rd starts the Mullets begin to chip away and get back into the game. Perez and Berkman each single to start the inning. Olerud follows with a pea that ends up driving in Perez, Berkman stops at 3rd. Reed leaves – Maduro in to pitch. Looks like a chance to hold him there as Piazza grounds to Jeter, but he throws it away, Berkman scores, Olerud stops at 3rd, Piazza on 1st. It’s now 5-3 and still no one out. Gonzalez then grounds to 3rd, no play at 2nd, out at 1st, Olerud still on 3rd. Rios grounds back to Maduro – Olerud still holding on 3rd, 2 down. Hunter whiffs, rally over, 5-3 Manhattan. Whoops 6-3 Manhattan as Anderson homers (10) in the bottom half. In the 5th, Flora-Bama cuts it to 6-4 when Berkman doubles and Olerud follows with rbi double. But then Garrett Anderson hits his 2nd 2nd dinger (11), this one for 2 runs in the bottom half and the Gas Hornets are up 8-4. It gets better for the home team when Ricky Henderson drives one over the wall (5) for 2 more runs in the 8th and game 3 ends in a 10-4 surprise for the good guys!! | Game #4: | Now for the biggie – Josh Becket and his grade 22!! Get ready for excitement. Bottom of the 1st. Derek Jeter leads off and reaches first on Becket throwing error. Kendall grounds him to 2nd. Durham walks, runners on 1st and 2nd. Tino Martinez grounds to Liefer wide at 3rd, he throws it away, Jeter scores, Durham to 3rd. Chris Latham then lines one hard to LF, Reuben Sierra snags it, Durham tags and scores, 2-0. Manhattan is still hitless (and the 2 runs are unearned). Two outs and Gas Hornets get their 1st hit when Garrett Anderson charges one to deep right center for a 2 run blast (12) and a 4-0 (all unearned) Manhattan lead after 1.
Of course it would be nice to say that was the end of the story – BUT! Top 2 – Liefer gets a 1 out single, moves to 2nd on a ground out and then scores on an Adam Kennedy double. 4-1. Top 3 – Olerun draws a 1 out walk and moves to 2nd on a Piazza slow roller, 2 outs. Juan Gonzalez then lines one just past Jeter at short, rag arm Ricky Henderson chases it down, lead foot Olerud tries to scores – and he wins the race (looked like slow motion – slow motion replay took 2 minutes to show). 4-2 after 3. Beckett has become Beckett so let’s move to Top 4th – Tori Hunter starts things off with a solo homer (6) and it’s 4-3. Neifi Perez singles with 1 out and steals 2nd on a Berkman whiff, 2 outs. Olerud up and singles to right center, Perez runs through the red light at 3rd and scores – we have a tie game: 4-4 after 4! Beckett stays in to start the 5th but after the 1st two runners reach, Todd Van Poppel is brought in and he quells the riot. We move to the 7th still knotted at 4, bottom half, Van Poppel still hurling. It gets exciting when Ray Durham clubs a massive 1 out triple (he’s now singled, doubled and tripled). IW to Tino. Van Poppel still hurling – Chris Latham then singles scoring Durham and it’s 5-4 Gas Hornets. We move to the 8th and Jeff Shaw is called on to hold things steady – and he does, getting a 6 out, perfect save!! |
| Game #5: | Down 3 games to 1 as the finale starts, Mullets really looking to get back on track. However, Matt Morris says NO! Tori Hunter gets a single in the 6th (and then gets picked off). Neifi Perez draws a 2 out walk in the 9th – those were all the baserunners the Mullets got. 28 batters on the day, 1 hit, 1 walk, no runs. Morris was more than on his game. Ron Coomer hits a 2 run homer (5) in the 2nd and Ray Durham a solo shot (9) in the 3rd – that was the scoring. FNA 0-1-1 LP Person (11-3) dropped his 2nd in the series. MGH 3-8-0 WP Morris (8-5) |
| Series Summary: | In a tough series where 2 1 run games fell Manhattan’s way, the Gas Hornets came up with 4-1 series win to draw close to Flora-Bama in the division race (1 GB). But there is still more than half the season to go and we can’t figure out how to win on the road…..Next week we host Baltimore and the Mullets return home to host Hampton. |

| Series Preview: | Monroeville is proving last years playoff run was anything but a fluke. They are currently atop the Wild Card Standings in the AL, but have their eyes on the Division Title as they are only 4 back of the defending WS Champs.
The Stealers continue their team dismantling and rebuild toward the future as they are dead last in the Central. |
| Game #1: | Pat Hentgen took a one hitter into the 6th inning. But a lead off single in the 6th, followed by a double sent him to the showers in favor of Grant Roberts. Mientkiewicz would hit a dribbler to third with the infield in. Macias would throw home nipping the runner by a hair.
Now with runners on the corners but still only one away with Vlad at the plate. Doug would take off for second on the first pitch, only to be tossed out for the second out of the inning. Since stealing second didnt work, the Monroeville Manager sent Hollandsworth home on the very next pitch. The surprise didnt work as the Stealers were ready for it and the inning was over. Troy Glaus would finally put MVM on the board with a solo shot in the 7th. The lead was short lived as Encarnacion hit a two run shot in the bottom of the inning to give the Stealers the lead. We all know you dont give the Stealers a one run lead late as they are excellent in that scenario. The excellence continued as Shuey and Nen worked the last two innings to give Southlake the win by a score of 2-1. Lieber was outstanding for the Maulers going 8 innings giving up just the two runs on 5 hits but took the hard luck loss. WP: Mota (1-0) |
| Game #2: | The Maulers would chase Haynes in the 4th inning when he surrendered his 8th hit on the day, but would only score two runs thanks to a Soriano shot in the 2nd inning. Tavarez would continue the streak of great pitching for the Monroeville boys, until the 7th inning he saw some trouble.
With two runners on down by a score of 2-1, Nunez would take one deep to give the Stealers the lead. Trouble wasnt over for MVM as Beltran would add a solo shot before the skipper took the ball from Tavarez. The Stealer bullpen was again outstanding, as Fetters and Leskanic ensure the lead would hold up giving Southlake their second consecutive win by a score of 5-2. WP: Fetters (1-0) |
| Game #3: | Finley continued his season of complete games or gone early. In todays game Christenson lead off with a homerun, telling us exactly which scenario would play out for this one Finley gave up 4 runs in the first inning and another in the third to finish his day after just two innings and one batter.
Darren Oliver was drinking the same water apparently as he gave up 8 runs on 10 hits as he worked 3 innings on the day. The Stealers would send 12 men to the plate scoring 7 times in the 4th to take a 10-6 lead. The Maulers would add 3 runs in the 7th to cut the lead but the Stealer bullpen was too effective as they shut the door. Final Score Stealers 11 – Monroeville 9 WP: Roberts (1-0) |
| Game #4: | Schoeneweis vs Schmidt would be the type of pitching matchup the Maulers would want.
It was scoreless until one out in the bottom of the 5th. A walk to Anderson would start things for Southlake. With the hit and run on a bounce back to Schmidt looked like the doubleplay he wanted. Instead he threw it away leading to the first run of the game. After securing the next out, Schmidt yielded a single and walk to load the bases for Jose Macias who would live every young boys dream of a Grand Salami !!! It was suddenly 5-0 Stealers thanks to 5 UNEarned runs. We know you just dont give the Stealers a late lead. The Maulers would chip away thanks to some shakey defense by the Stealers who had 3 errors on the day. But the back end of the pen would shut the doors on the way to a 5-3 Stealer Victory. | Game #5: | With the bullpen maxed out the Stealers needed a starter who could go long into the game. Gary Glover was itching to get into action. That was one itch the Stealers should not have scratched.

Danbury grabbed a 4-3 lead in the 5th, gave one up in the bottom, then tacked on 1 more in each of the 6th and 7th innings. Then the Gladiators had enough and scored 3 in the bottom of the 7th to reclaim the lead, and got an insurance run in the 8th. FINAL SCORE: GLA 8 – DMH 6 |
| Game #3: | This one looked to be Gladstone’s day, as they emerged from the first with a 1-1 tie, then took a 4-1 lead in the 4th. Danbury got one back in the top of the 5th and the Gladiators replied with a pair in the 6th. The Mad Hatters weren’t done yet, as they picked up a run in the 7th, then another pair off of Steve Karsay in the 8th. With a 6-5 lead in the top of the 9th, the Gladiators sent Francisco Rodriguez to the hill to close it out. Rodriguez threw one pitch and turned up lame with an arm issue, so Mike Lincoln came in on short rest and gave up a pair of runs to blow the save. Gladstone was unable to reply in the bottom of the 9th. FINAL SCORE: DMH 7 – GLA 6 |
