STEVE CARLTON – MWWL HALL OF FAME BALLOT BIO
Steve “Lefty” Carlton is unequivocally one of the most dominant and decorated pitchers in Mid-West Winter League (MWWL) history, making his inclusion in the Hall of Fame mandatory. His 17-season MWWL career saw him play for the Old Mill Legends (1970-1972), Punxsutawney Philibusters (1973-1974), Kansas City Pine Tars (1975-1976), Quebec City Le Blue (1977-1982), Missouri Black Bears (1983), Valdosta Bombers (1983), Chicago Demolition (1984-1985), Western Mass Seahawks (1984), and Fort Worth Panthers (1986-1987).
Carlton’s career totals are staggering: he compiled 261 career wins against 222 losses, ranking him among the league’s all-time leaders in victories. His longevity is reflected in his 594 games started and an astonishing 4,287.3 innings pitched. A true workhorse, he tallied 166 complete games and an impressive 3,081 career strikeouts.
His peak seasons were historically dominant. In 1980 with the Quebec City Le Blue, Carlton achieved the pitching triple crown, leading the league with a remarkable 29 wins, a minuscule 1.93 ERA, and a career-high 322 strikeouts. This unforgettable campaign earned him the Cy Young Award, as well as an All-Star Game Starter selection and a Gold Glove Pitcher award that year.
Carlton was an eight-time MWWL All-Star (1970, 1972, 1977, 1980, 1981) and a two-time Gold Glove Pitcher (1973, 1980). His exceptional 1972 season with the Old Mill Legends featured 17 wins over 355.2 innings, a brilliant 1.87 ERA, and a league-leading 278 strikeouts, highlighting his early career brilliance. Carlton also shone in the postseason, going 3-2 with a 2.87 ERA in 9 playoff games, including a 1-0 record with a 2.77 ERA in the 1980 Division Series. His combination of wins, strikeouts, elite ERA seasons, and major awards cements his legacy as a first-ballot inductee.
