Long Beach Chicago Demolition @ ChiCago Demolition

PREVIEW – The 2000 Mid-West Winter League World Series is set to showcase a clash of two underdog teams, who never expected to be here, as the Long Beach Titans and the Chicago Demolition prepare to battle for MWWL supremacy. The Titans’ remarkable journey to the World Series has been nothing short of extraordinary. Despite entering the postseason as a Wild Card team, they’ve proven themselves as a formidable force with 100 wins throughout the season, ranking them third in the MWWL. Notably, they faced the formidable Blarney Drive Bandits, the best team in the league, a whopping 22 times during the regular season.  The Titans’ path to the World Series includes sweeping the Goldeyes in the Wild Card Round, a stunning five-game victory against the Blarney Drive Bandits, and a remarkable comeback in the League Championship by clinching games 6 and 7 against the Gas Hornets. Their success can be attributed to their impressive batting lineup, boasting a remarkable team batting average of .306 and a slew of players with double-digit home runs. Dave Justice, a standout player, showcased his prowess with 52 home runs and 140 RBIs.  Not to be overshadowed, the Titans’ pitching staff ranks third in the league, with a strong bullpen anchored by Rod Beck and Curt Leskanic. This resilient and well-rounded team should not be underestimated as they vie for the championship.  Representing the American League, the Chicago Demolition, no stranger to the World Series stage, finally secures their place in the 2000 MWWL World Series. With a dominant ace in Pedro Martinez and a likely Cy Young winner in 2000, complemented by a formidable pitching rotation and a potent offensive lineup, the Demolition are a force to be reckoned with.

The Titans and the Demolition are set to provide baseball fans with an unforgettable clash of talent and determination, making the 2000 MWWL World Series a highly anticipated event.

1992 ALL-STAR GAME

MWWL-ALL-STAR-LOGO-1992The 1992 Mid-West Winter League All-Star Game was held on Saturday, November 6th, 1992 in the home of the Winnipeg Gold Eyes.

“Special recognition is given here to Brandon Hogan & Greg “Sarge” Stauffer for taking on the past All-Star Games Project as they will be playing these out and catching up not only the MWWL but some past MWBL All-Star Games as well.   Thank you very much Brandon & Sarge for helping out with these projects.  I hope you enjoy the Mid-West Winter & Mid-West Baseball League as much as we have done for the past 25 Years!”

The annual All-Star Classic returns to the National League confines where the American League looks to be out to return the favor for the beatdown received in 1991. The starter for the home team was Curt Schilling who on the season carried an 18-9 record with a 2.00 ERA over 238.1 innings and the American League sent out Bob Tewksbury and his 25-3 record, 1.88 ERA and 243.2 innings of work. Both men were winners of the Cy Young on the season.

Life on the mound started out rough for Schilling as Lou Whitaker reached due to a bad throw by Curt. Barry Larkin followed it up with an infield single up the middle to put the first two on. A third batter reaches when Larry Walker gets a single, but Whitaker was held at 3rd. The American League clearly had their eyes set on a big inning with the bases loaded and no one out. But then, Schilling showed why he won the Cy Young by striking out Gary Sheffield and Joe Carter back-to-back. Now with two outs, John Kruk gives it a shot but only manages a lazy fly ball to Andy Van Slyke. What a performance by Schilling. The crowd is ON FIRE now.

1991 ALL-STAR GAME

MWWL-ALL-STAR-LOGO-1991The 1991 Mid-West Winter League All-Star Game was held on Sunday, November 3rd, 1991 in the home of the Stockton Wings.

The 1991 All-Star game was scheduled to start at 7:15 PM on the East Coast.  Mother nature had a different timetable in mind.  Both starting pitchers were getting loose in the pen.  Nolan Ryan, winner of 23 games on the season for the A.L., and Mark Langston, who went 24 -9 with a 2.17 ERA in an incredible 41 starts, for the NL.   Then as predicted in the 1982 hit by Toto, “I bless the rains down in Africa”, and bless them it did.  A torrential storm came crashing down.
