Hampton Huskies @ Manhattan Gas Hornets |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Well, the only problem with going 0-162 is you’re still not guaranteed the 1st pick in the draft, so I guess we’d better try to get off the schnide! Problem is, we’ve got offense, but our Pitching is threadbare. Just ask Flora-Bama; they scored a LOT, so did we, BUT not as much as they did….Hampton comes to town after a 3-2 week hosting Baltimore. |
| Game #1: | Well, we give up 12 hits, including 3 to Newhan (he misses the cycle by failing to homer). He does drive in 2 and scores twice. J.D. Drew homers (1), Podsednik hits 2 doubles, and the Huskies plate runs: 2 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd, 2 in the 5th! The Gas Hornets have some bite, too: they score 2 in the 1st, another in the 2nd, and then 4 big ones in the 4th! Jeter is 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs; Graffanino homers (1) and singles driving in 2. Manhattan hammers out 15 hits. Up 7-4 in the 5th, Ginter struggles and is pulled; Hampton still got those 2 runs to draw to 7-6. Bullpen somehow holds through 8, then we get an insurance run, and Flash Gordon closes it out in the 9th to foil his former team. HAM 6-12-0 LP Webb (0-2) MGH 8-15-0 WP Carter (1-0) S Gordon (1) |
| Game #2: | Hampton plates 1 in the 1st and 2 more in the 3rd – Tino homers for 3 runs to tie it in the 3rd. Hampton scores another in the 5th – Tino homers to tie it in the 6th (his 3rd on the year). Derrick Lee has 3 hits, an RBI, and Ramirez has 2 RBIs. Then Tino doubles in the 8th and scores his 3rd run on a Durham double, and the Gas Hornets finally take the lead, with Tino factoring in all 5 runs. Flash Gordon again closes it out in the 9th! HAM 4-7-1 LP Suppan (0-1) MGH 5-8-1 WP Brocail (1-0) S Gordon (2) |
| Game #3: | I was hoping to say it was all Manhattan this week (one can dream), but Ricardo Rodriguez had other ideas. He pitched 7 strong innings, 5 hits, NO runs, and his teammates again scored in the 1st (1 run) and then 2 in the 4th and 5th innings. Ramirez (3) hit a 2-run homer; Lee had 3 singles and an RBI; Newhan and Podsednik each had 2 hits. And watch out against Hampton, if they have a lead after 7 (or probably 6) it’s almost always going to be curtains, lights out, fat lady sings, whatever. And this game was no exception. And they didn’t even use the big guns. We did get a walk in the 9th—big whup. HAM 5-9-1 WP Rodriguez (1-0) MGH 0-5-2 LP Wakefield (0-2) |
| Game #4: | My goodness – 1st inning runs from Hampton again, 2 of them. Newhan and Podnesdik set the table, and Ramirez doubles them home (1 of 3 hits, 2 of them doubles for Ramirez). Manhattan, however, answers in the 2nd with 3 of their own and adds a 4th run in the 3rd. Lee knocks in another in the 5th to cut it to 4-3, but Manhattan counters with 1 in the 6th. Then J.D. Drew drives in 1 in the 7th, but Manhattan answers with 1 in their half for a 6-4 lead. Meadows, Carter, and Gordon keep the Huskies scoreless down the stretch, giving Manhattan a 3rd win. HAM 4-13-0 LP Marquis (1-1) MGH 6-10-1 WP Bell (1-1) S Gordon (3) |
| Game #5: | Game 1 of the twin bill, and it’s a doozy. Scoreless through 6, but the Gas Hornets manufacture a run in the 7th, scoring on a Bautista RBI double. Jimmy Gobble (anticipation Thanksgiving) was pitching way over his head and into the 8th, tossing a neat shutout. Hatteberg singles, but all is well until 2 batters later Rod Barajas unloads a bomb (1) to flip the score to 2-1 Hampton. And that sets up the bullpen. Lidge comes in, tosses a perfect 8th, and he’s set to close it out in the 9th – even with a stacked pen behind the Grade 22*. He opens the 9th walking Durham, but then Tino connects with the towering 2-run walk-off homer (4) and gets the Gas Hornets their 4th win of the series! HAM 2-6-0 LP Lidge (1-1) BS (1) MGH 3-7-0 WP Gobble (1-1); he ended up going the whole way |
| Game #6: | I’d like to say the nightcap was just as dramatic, but this time the Huskies bullpen did what they were supposed to. Hampton draws 1st blood on a Ramirez RBI single in the 1st. Manhattan responds with 2 in the 3rd, but then Hampton gets a 2-run Lee homer (2) in the 4th and a Hatteberg homer (1) in the 5th. We get 1 in the 6th to narrow it to 4-3, but then Linebrink, Lidge, and Nathan shut the door for the Hampton 4-3 win. The worst part was that we couldn’t take advantage of Webb’s 8 walks in his 6 innings! EIGHT! HAM 4-9-0 WP Webb (1-2) S Nathan (2) MGH 3-6-1 LP Reyes (0-1) |
| Series Summary: | Well, 4- 2 this week is better than 0-5 last week. Next week, Baltimore comes to town. |
Flora-Bama Mullets @ Baltimore Blue Crabs |

| Game #1: | Chipper Jones homered in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game but couldn’t seal the deal as the Mullets scored 3 in the 10th to win the opener.
MULLETS 5 / 10 / 0 |
| Game #2: | Well, the Mullets won’t go 162-0. Jorge Posada‘s 6th inning, 2-run home run holds up, as Barry Zito and a pair of relievers manage to hold Flora-Bama to a single run, and Baltimore wins it, 2-1.
MULLETS 1 / 9 / 1 |

MULLETS 12 / 19 / 1 |
