STRAYS
Castle Rock Hounds @ Fort Worth Panthers |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | The smell of hot dogs is in the air as the Hounds welcome the Panthers into town for the home opening series. The Hounds are cautiously optimistic about this season, as they have a great set of bats, pretty good relief pitching and a mediocre starting staff. It is 1999, so offense is going to be in abundance. Play ball! |
| Game #1: | Welp, this was a crazy one to start the season. The Panthers jump out to an early 10-2 lead and things are looking bleak for the Hounds. Fort Worth put up 9 runs in the 4th, and chase Kenny Rogers, even though five were unearned. But, this Hounds team is never out of it completely. They start chipping away, and then have a ridiculous 9th inning, putting up 9 runs to tie it at 15-15! The Fort Worth manager, meanwhile, is keeping Grahe in the game the whole time. It goes to the bottom of the 10th, and Royce Clayton walks off with a two-out, 3-run homer to win Game 1, 18-15. The Hounds hit five home runs (Snow, Tatis, Bonds, Clayton, Easley) and the teams combine for 39 hits and 33 runs.
WP: Carlos Reyes (1-0) |
| Game #2: | This one looks to be a lower-scoring affair as Kevin Brown takes the mound for Fort Worth. The Hounds jump out to a quick 3-0 lead by scoring one run in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings, with some clutch singles from Snow, Sweeney and Cordero. Fort Worth plates two runs in the 6th thanks to a Homer Bush two-RBI double. But, that is all the scoring we would see, as the Castle Rock bullpen gets the job done. Fort Worth grounded into 3 double plays in the game, which really hurt their scoring chances.
WP: Hermanson (2-0) |
| Game #3: | Lima vs. Dreifort in this one, and Lima has a tremendous start. He goes the full nine innings, only allowing one run in the ninth. He spreads out five hits and walks nobody. Meanwhile, the Panthers’ bats do enough, getting four runs off of Dreifort, including a solo shot from Barker.
WP: Lima (2-0) |
| Game #4: | Ritchie vs. Carpenter in Game 4. The Hounds jump out to an early 3-0 lead and bodies start to drop. Gilkey is injured for 12 days and Kelly and Glanville collide in the Panthers outfield and are both lost, Kelly for 12 days and Glanville for 5. Mieske takes advantage and hits a 3-run shot to make it 7-0 for Castle Rock in just the second inning. Pudge and McGriff get two back with back-to-back solo shots in the 3rd. We finally see a reliever from the Fort Worth pen, as Ritchie is pulled after 3+ IP. The bullpen does not fare much better as Castle Rock jumps out to a 12-4 lead. Fort Worth makes it interesting, getting within three runs after a five-run 8th inning, but Benitez closes it down. Fort Worth hits into another 3 double plays to bail out the Hounds pitching staff. Four guys end up injured.
WP: Carpenter (2-0) |
| Game #5: | This was a low-scoring one as Pettitte and Nomo battle. It is 1-0, Fort Worth until Michael Barrett delivers a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 7th to tie it at 1-1. McGriff hits a solo shot in the top of the 9th off of Elarton to give Fort Worth the 2-1 lead and Nomo holds on for the victory.
WP: Nomo (1-1) |
| Game #6: | Fort Worth can salvage a split while Castle Rock looks to win the series 4-2. Mulholland takes the hill for Castle Rock while it is a bullpen game for Castle Rock, with Reyes starting. The second game of a double-header did not provide enough rest for Rogers to take the hill on short rest. Clayton, Sweeney and Huskey hit solo shots in the first and second to stake Castle Rock out to an early 3-0 lead. But, Fort Worth ties it up 3-3 after the top of the 5th. The teams are knotted at 4-4 going into the bottom of the 8th after Fort Worth scores on the third Castle Rock error. In the bottom of the 10th, Luis Gonzalez leads off with a double, Dye is walked intentionally. Mieske delivers a sac fly to get pinch-runner Bonds to third with one out. Sweeney delivers a walk-off single and Castle Rock takes the game 5-4, and the series 4 games to 2.
WP: Benitez (1-0) |
| Series Summary: | A lot of hits and a lot of runs in this one. Castle Rock takes the series 4-2, and finds themselves off to an 8-3 start to the season. |

Manhattan Gas Hornets @ Santa Rosa Beach Bums |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | NL East – could be a war of attrition and seeing which team is the one with the best losing record? Or will the Beach Bums come alive, or is it Hampton this year. Someone will probably say, “if the Gas Hornets got a little pitching, they could take it” – not that again??? Oh well, 6 pack with the Bums |
| Game #1: | Things were going well for the Gas Hornets until the 8th when Ken Caminiti hits a 3 run homer (1) off Donne Wall to turn a 3-1 win into a 4-3 loss, ouch! SRB 4-4-0 WP Travis Miller (1-0) S Steve Karsay (1) MGH 3-8-1 LP Wall (0-1) BS (1) |
| Game #2: | Ah – but when Brian Moehler comes out and tosses a 6 hit CG shutout, you have to be happey! Ray Durham (2) and Dave Martinez (1) go yard for the good guys. SRB 0- 6-1 LP Russ Ortiz (1-1) MGH 7-10-0 WP Moehler (1-1) |

Juan Encarnacion (1) homers, Neifi Perez homers (2) and Corey Koskie drives in 2 with 3 hits, and Rob Ducey drives in 3 with 3 hits! Pat Rapp hung around long enough for the win (barely). But then Reggie Sanders has a great day – 3 for 4, walk, double, homer (2) and 5 rbis! He alone would have been enough for the win. However Ken Caminiti (2) and Neifi Perez (3) homer as well – Caminiti’s is for 3 runs. Former Hornet Jeff Reed cranks out 3 singles. John Smotlz does enough for the win, 7 ip, 9 hits, 3 runs. SRB 10-12-1 WP Smoltz (2-0) MGH 4-10-1 LP Cruz (1-1) |
| Game #6: | Game 2 – in an Ernie specialty, we are playing two and it becomes a pitchers’ duel. All blank through 6 then Juan Encarnacion doubles in the 7th and Richard Hidalgo singles him home. Then the Gas Hornets start a rally in the bottom half and tie the score when Todd Pratt grounds into a DP. Then in the 8th, Andy Fox doubles and Derek Jeter is given the IW. Durham then grounds into FC moving Fox to 3rd. Garrett Anderson follows with big single with the runners moving and both Fox and Durham score for a 3-1 lead.
