| Corktown Bootleggers @ Castle Rock Hounds | |
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | The Bootleggers come to Castle Rock in a battle of teams sitting at 8-8. Pretenders or contenders? Let’s see. |
| Game #1: | Jason Dickson, the Hounds’ starter, enacts many people’s dreams by knocking out A-Rod with a HBP in the top of the 1st. He’ll be out for one game. Meanwhile, Castle Rock pushes out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a Dye home run. Corktown takes revenge by knocking Stahoviak for 10 games with a HBP in the bottom of the 7th. The game is getting chippy and both dugouts are likely warned. But, in the end, Dickson cruises to a 6-1 victory, only allowing 6 hits and the final run in the 9th.
WP: Dickson (1-1) |
| Game #2: | Ben McDonald faces off against James Baldwin in a pretty even match up. Bootleggers get on the board first with a Mariano Duncan 2-run homer. Corktown piles it on in the 4th, making it 6-0. Duncan adds another in the 5th to make it 8-0! Baldwin, meanwhile, has a no-hitter through 6 innings. Bonds breaks up the no-no in the 7th with a single. Duncan hits a third homer(!) in the 9th. He only had 8 on the season, so this is quite a power surge for Mariano. The final is 10-2 for Corktown.
WP: Baldwin (3-0) |
| Game #3: | Kenny Rogers vs. Fernando in Game 3. Hoping for a close one after two blowouts to start the series. Corktown gets a runner to third in each of the first three innings, but can’t drive them in. But, they break through in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. While the Hounds tie it up, Corktown scores another in the 6th and Rogers gets tossed for hitting Lankford, who is injured for 2 days. No love lost between these two teams. Ruffin comes on in relief and walks everybody, and the Bootleggers take an 8-3 lead. The final is 9-3 Corktown.
WP: Valenzuela (1-0) |
| Game #4: | After dropping two blowouts in a row, the Hounds turn to their worst starter, Miranda to stem the tide. He’s facing off against Sanders, a 14YZ, so the odds are not in our favor. Miranda walks the bases loaded in the 1st, only to get Giambi to roll into a DP, and escape the jam. Hounds turn another DP in the second to avoid another jam, and Miranda is living on borrowed time. Huskey puts the Hounds on top with a solo shot in the second. A-Rod ties it up with a HR in the 3rd. Corktown plates 3 in the 5th to take a 4-2 lead. After walking his 7th batter, Miranda gets the hook. Bootleggers continue to pile it on, and take an 8-2 lead in the 7th. Final is 10-2, Corktown. The Bootleggers bats have just been too much for the Hounds pitching staff to handle.
WP: Sanders (2-1) |
| Game #5: | The Hounds turn to Pettitte to stem the tide while the Bootleggers counter with a highly-rated Trachsel. It’s a pitchers duel for the first five innings, with the score knotted 1-1. Both teams score in the 6th to make it 2-2. Luis Gonzalez supplies a clutch 2-RBI double in the 7th to put the Hounds up 4-2. Plunk gets A-Rod to strike out with the bases loaded to keep it at 4-3 after 8 innings. But, Corktown will not be denied. They plate 3 runs in the 9th and Hernandez comes on to close it out. Final is Corktown 6, Castle Rock 4.
WP: Casian (1-0) |
| Game #6: | The Hounds are trying to salvage something out of the series by taking the bookend games. It’s a bullpen game for Castle Rock, as Dickson is still tired from Game 1. Ramon Martinez is on the mound for Corktown, looking to avenge his Game 1 loss. It’s a back and forth affair, with Corktown taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the 7th. Corktown breaks through in the 8th with 2 home runs (A-Rod and Belle) to take a 7-2 lead, and that is the final.
WP: Ramon Martinez (2-2) |
| Series Summary: | The Bootleggers prove that they are the real contenders in this series, taking it 5-1. How this team was .500 coming into this game, I can’t explain. With A-Rod, Belle, Giambi, etc. and a strong starting staff and bullpen, they seem destined to go a long way. |
