Detroit Stars @ Mexico City Chihuahuas
Series Summary:  Detroit takes 6/8 at Mexico City. Mexico City limps into the wild card spot with a ton of injuries.
Missouri Black Bears @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview:  NL East Showdown – 2nd place Missouri needs a sweep at Manhattan to tie for the division. And at the same time, Nolan Ryan is seeking his 300th MWWL win. He’s slated to start games 1 and 6 for the visitors in a last ditch effort for the pennant and his big win. Gas Hornets seek to clinch early and give some rest to the starters, but winning the division is priority #1.
Game #1:  Nolan Ryan vs. Alan Embree (an 11 vs. a 3 and the 11 has a lot of home run power backing him up). Things start off well for the Gas Hornets as Polonia singles in the 1st, moves to 2nd and scores on a Livingstone single. But the Black Bears counter with 2 in the 2nd on a William 2 run homer (14) and give Nolan the lead. But the Gas Hornets keep chipping away at Ryan and plate 2 more for a 3-2 lead in the 5th. In the 6th after giving up his 10th hit, MGR Peters pulls Nolan while he’s trailing. The move worked in the 6th as the Gas Hornets scores no more. However, Embree pitched 5 and left giving up just 3 hits (including that 2 run homer). His team scored those 2 in the 5th and 5 relievers combined to give up just four more hits. Meanwhile Manhattan scores 2 more in the 7th to increase their lead to 5-2. Then came the 9th – Patterson opened on the mound and gave up a hit. Doug Jones comes in, and he gives up 2 more to load the bases. 2 outs, based loaded Barry Bonds at the plate, Schindel leaves Jones in and he fans Bonds to end the game – and CLINCH the NL EAST!!!!
MBB 2- 7-2 LP Ryan (14-7)
MGH 5-14-1 WP Embree (1-0) S D.Jones (31)
Game #2:  With the division already in hand, the Gas Hornets choose to rest a few, especially against Smiley. Bonds opens with a single as does Offerman, who moves Bonds to 3rd. Van Slyke hits into the DP and Bonds scores for the quick 1-0 lead. Gas Hornets get it right back in the bottom half. And then things open up for the Black Bears. They get 3 in the 4th and 5rh for a 7-1 lead. Homers by Bonds (23) and Van Slyke key those efforts. Bonds gets 3 hits in the game. Gas Hornets get 2 in the 5th on a Walker homer (3). Then with the score 8-3, Bielecki comes in to pitch the 8th, he faces 3, gives up 3 hits, home crowd returns from the concession stands and watches as Gas Hornets plate 2 to cut it 8-5, but the Black Bears call on Wetteland to pitch the 9th and he sets Manhattan down in order.
MBB 8-11-0 WP Smiley (12-5) S Wetteland (19)
MGH 5-10-2 LP J.Jones (6-7)
Game #3:  Belcher vs. Reed and it ends up a classic pitcher’s duel. Through 7 innings, Reed gives up just 2 hits and no runs, Belcher no runs as well. Reed leaves for a PHitter in the 7th but Chris Gwynn fails to come through with the bases loaded. Howe comes in and keeps the Bears scoreless in the 8th but Fermin strokes an rbi single (his 3rd hit) off reliever Rogers in the 8th for a 1-0 lead. Howe starts the 9th gets 2 but then gives up a single to Van Slyke. Doug Jones comes in to face JuanGon and gets him to end the game.
MBB 0-3-1 LP Rogers (3-6)
MGH 1-9-1 WP Howe (3-0) S D.Jones (32)
Game #4:  This one looked a lot like the last game. Burkett and Morris were masterful. Morris goes 6 giving up 2 hits and fanning 7, but he did have some control issues as he walked 6 (SIX)! One of those walks lead to a Black Bear run in the 5th which tied the game at 1-1. Burkett goes 7.1 giving up 6 hits and that 1 run. We end up in extra innings. Bonds leads off the 10th with a double, but is nailed at the plate on a Van Slyke single. But with 2 outs and that great play in the books, Van Slyke steals 2nd and then scores on a JuanGon single for a 2-1 lead. Bielecki then comes in to nail it down in the 10th, he gives up a walk, Yount steals 2nd with 1 out but Santiago and Polonia leave him stranded as the Black Bears even the series.
MBB 2-6-0 WP William (5-5) S Bielecki (1) 10 innings
MGH 1-6-1 LP Harris (2-3)
Game #5:  This one was NOT a pitcher’s duel as 17 runs are scored. Up 5-3 the Black Bears see that go up in smoke as the Gas Hornets score 5 in the 7th. The 8-5 lead looks safe but Radinsky walks 2 and gives up 2 hits in .2 innings in the 8th and Doug Jones comes in. He seemingly gets out of it until Pat Kelly makes his 2nd error of the game. That allows JuanGon to go long long for a 2 run homer and put the Black Bears up 9-8. In the bottom of the 8th, Mgr Schindel forgets it’s the 8th and sends a runner around 3rd to tie it up, he’s thrown out for the 2nd out in the inning. If he’d have held, who knows what might have happend. Gossage then pitces a perfect 9th for the save. JuanGon gets 4 hits (misses the cycle by a triple) and 4 rbis in the game!
MBB 9-11-0 WP Foster (2-2) S Gossage (4) BS Wetteland (5) he walks in the tying run.
MGH 8- 9-2 LP D.Jones (6-9) BS (9) he’s been struggling as of late, not good sign.
MBB
Game #6:  It’s back to Nolan Ryan time as he tries again to reach 300 wins for his career. Boy, does he come through. He tosses a 2 hitter, complete game, 1 walk and 9 ks for the WIN – #300!!!!
He gets plenty of support – JuanGon hits another homer (38) as does Barry Bonds (24). 3 runs in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd and that was all the scoring in the game.
MBB 4-8-1 WP NOLAN RYAN (15-7) #300!
MGH 0-2-1 LP Hershiser (16-11)
Game #7:  Down to the final game of the season and Mike Gardner comes in to face Andy Ashby. Bears are up 4 games to 2 in the series, but the Gas Hornets accomplished priority #1 with the division win. But that’s not stopping them today. After Ashby gives them 2.1 strong innings, he falters a bit in the 3rd and Schindel pulls him for Radinsky, who gets the final outs of the 3rd. He stays in to bat and collects his first hit of the season and later scores in a 4 run Gas Hornet outburst that included a two run clout from Tino (13). He’s been coming on as the season closes, hopefully he can continue into the post season and the future. 2 more in the 4th offset the 1 Black Bears run in the 4th. Mason closed out the 4th and continued into the 5th but the Bears pounce on him, and Patterson and score 3 times in the 5th to make it 6-4 Manhattan. O’Brien had the big bat for the Bears in this one collecting 4 hits including a triple and 1 rbi. But the 5th innings was the end of the scoring as Wiliams and Wetteland quiet the Gas Hornets and Gott, Howe, Harris and Jones shut down the Bears.
MBB 4-11-0 LP Gardiner (0-2)
MGH 6- 7-1 WP Radinsky (1-0) S D.Jones (33)
Series Summary:  Well the Black Bears – Gas Hornets rivalry continues with the Bears prevailing 4-3 but the Gas Hornets having enough to take the division by 6 games. Nolan Ryan also reached the 300 victory plateau with the 2-hit shutout in Game 6.

Next up for Manhattan, a tough battle against anyone of 3 better NL West teams – a division with 3 90 game winners and perhaps 2 100 game winners!

Detroit Stars @ Flossmoor Flying Squirrels

California Quakes @ Fort Worth Panthers
Series Preview:  California playing out the string on a disappointing season. Ft. Worth having already broken their single season record for team wins looks to set some pretty nice individual milestones.

FWP 11, CAL 2

Game #2:  A Paul Molitor triple and Tony Phillips sac fly in the 8th made things close, but the Panthers hold on to win. Kevin Brown improves to 21-5 2.52 and James Austin gets his 38th save.

Game #3:  This time it was a Jose Canseco solo home run in the 9th that made the game close, but Ft. Worth prevails. Zane Smith finishes the season undefeated at 18-0 2.15. Mike Jackson gets his 2nd save.

Game #4:  Third straight game the Quakes can only manage 1 run. This time on Chris Sabo‘s 10th homer of the year. Bob Tewksbury becomes the 2nd Panther pitcher to get to 25 wins goes to 25-3 1.88. James Austin gets his 39th save.

FWP 10, CAL 1

Game #7:  Carney Lansford got a standing ovation from the home town crowd when he replaced Sheffield at third base in perhaps his final MWWL appearance. Lansford would go 2 for 3. The big news however was back up catcher Lance Parrish tying the game in the bottom of the 9th with a three run homer his 5th of the season. Chris Sabo executes the squeeze play top of the 11th, but it was for naught as the Panthers would tie and win the game in the bottom of the 11th. The big blow being a three-run homer by Herm Winningham. Mike Jackson wins the game in relief improving to 3-0-2 2.82.

FWP 8, CAL 5

Series Summary:  Ft. Worth takes the final series of 1992 six games to 1. The Panther’s reach 70 home wins and 134 victories overall.
