| Detroit Stars @ Portland Mavericks | |
|---|---|
| Preview | Life is filled with firsts; First breath, first love, and of course the most important… the first pitch of a new baseball season… for a new team… in a new stadium. Portland is weird. There is no beating around the bush. Fans camp outside the stadiums overnight *before* games. Despite months straight of rain, no one from Portland uses an umbrella. Ever. Adult badminton leagues, adult kickball leagues, adult *hide-n-seek* leagues. Yeah that. Bearded and beer-bellied, we just don’t fit into the typical picture frame comfortably. And our baseball team? Weird too. The Portland Mavericks joined the Pacific Coast League in 1973 as the first independent professional baseball team. A rag tag group of ballplayers from the Island of misfits, the Mavericks played 5 successful years of baseball before the forces of conformity swallowed them whole.Until now.Flash, er… forward to 1991 and the Portland Mavericks are back, but not as a single-A short season team, but with the best of the best in the MWWL. And If the Mavericks have their way, baseball, will never be normal again.

|
| Game #1: |
Montana’s Frank Tanana cruises and makes Albert Belle‘s 1st inning 2-run HR look like it is going to stand up until the Cutthroats bullpen enters in the 8th. Chicago bangs around the Cutthroats pen with 3 runs in the 8th and 4 more in the 9th. Alvin Davis haunts his former team of last season with 2 HRs and 3 RBI while Darryl Strawberry, 3 hits, and Wade Boggs, 4 hits, contribute as well. The World Champion Clovis Cougars open the defense of their crown against the Long Beach Titans
|
| Game #1: |
Navarro on the hill for the Titans while the Cougars counter with Smiley. Clovis holds a slim 2-1 lead into the 6th but Rene Gonzalez takes Smiley deep to tie it up at two. In the 7th Dascenzo singles in the fleet footed Rick Dempsey for a 3-2 Titan lead. Duane Ward came in and shut the door for a long three inning save giving Long Beach the win in the season opener.
Long Beach 3 Clovis 2 |
| Game #2: |
Johnson vs Viola in what should be a good match up. Cougars jump all over Frank with a 4 spot in the second and another in the fifth to put it out of reach. The Big Unit mowed them down giving up only 4 hits while striking out 13 for the complete game shutout.
Clovis 8 Long Beach 0 |
| Game #3: |
Game three Tomlin for the Titans and Erik Hansen for Clovis. Cougars again erupt early with 5 in the 1st and another in the second for a quick 6-0 lead. In the meantime Hansen is perfect through five before surrendering a couple of meaningless hits. When the dust settles it’s another Clovis shutout as Hansen goes the distance for a two hitter with 9 strikeouts.
Clovis 6 Long Beach 0 |
| Game #4: |
Les Lancaster for Long Beach and playoff hero David Wells for Clovis. A virtual repeat of game three as Clovis jumps out early again and Wells brings some filthy stuff to the mound that the Titans can’t quite square up on. Wells twirls the third straight Clovis shutout giving up 7 hits while striking out 2.
Clovis 6 Long Beach 0 |
| Game #5: |
Guzman and Black take the hill today as Long Beach looks to at least score a run. Good game that goes south for Clovis when Brooks and Baerga go back to back with big flies off of Black in the 7th to tie it up. Then the pair put the nails in the coffin in the 8th when they deliver back to back run scoring singles to give Long Beach the lead and margin of victory.
Long Beach 5 Cougars 3 |
| Game #6: |
Rematch of game one. Both teams score a run in the third but that is it for a loooong time as the score remains knotted at 1 through 14 arduous innings. In the 15th the Cougars plate the game winner when Hamilton drives home Dickie Thon for the 2-1 Clovis victory. The hero of the game for Clovis was new bullpen arm Wally Ritchie who went 5 hitless innings in relief for the win.
15 innings Clovis 2 Titans 1
|
| Game #7: |
Viola and the Big Unit for the series finale. Again the Cougars jump on Viola with 4 in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th to chase him from the game. Johnson continued his mastery of the Titans with his second complete game shutout, this time giving up 5 hits while striking out 12.
Clovis 9 Long Beach 0 |
| Summary |
From the Clovis Independent: In a stunning move yesterday Trent Reznor and the crew from Nine Inch Nails vacuumed and made the beds not only in their hotel rooms but also in several adjoining rooms according to Alicia Peters, manager of the Clovis Cole Hotel, where the group lodged over the past week. The band was in town for the opening day ceremonies and week long fan fest surrounding the World Champion Clovis Cougars.Said Peters, “It was really strange, the commandeered one of the staff’s cleaning carts and just went at it, many hands make light work and all”. When asked if this had ever happened before she replied, “Well, Willie Nelson was here last year and left a nice tip and a great contact high but nothing quite like this!” Neither Reznor or anyone else in the band could be contacted for comment. Cougars get their title defense off to a rousing start with a 5-2 series win that featured 4 shutouts. Johnson was the Cougars player of the week with two complete game shutouts and 25 strikeouts.

| Steel City Sluggers @ Manhattan Gas Hornets | |
|---|---|
| Preview |
Last year’s NL Division Champs, Steel City (West) and Manhattan (EAST)meet to open the 1991 season. Steel City is still on the rise, Manhattan looks to be dropping fast.
|
| Game #1: |
Dennis Martinez (1-0) tosses 2 hitter for 8 innings and coasts to 8-0 win. Dave Henderson goes 3 for 4 with 4 RBIS to lead the attack. Bob Welch (0-1) did not look like Cy Young anymore.
|
| Game #2: |
Sluggers score 3 in the 9th on the weak Gas Hornet bullpen to make it look easier than it was, 5-1 Sluggers. Andre Dawson beat up his old teammates with a double and homer (1). Belcher (1-0) the win Stewart (0-1) the loss.
|
| Game #3: |
Sluggers up 5-0 through 5 1/2 – another Dawson HR (2) for two of the runs. Gas Hornets mount comeback with 1 in 6th an 3 in the 7th – all unearned. But Sluggers get an insurance run in the 9th to win 6-4. Mulliniks also homers (1). WP Hurst (1-0), S Henke (1) against former team. LP Harris (0-1).
|
| Game #4: |
2 in the 1st and 1 in the 2nd (Fisk HR [1]) is enough as Leibrandt (1-0) and two relievers (Reardon and Henke S(2)) pretty much shuts down the Gas Hornets in a 4-1 Steel City win. Alicea though goes 3 for 3 with a walk for home team.
|
| Game #5: |
Steel City scores on rbi single in 2nd by Dunston, Huson hits a 2 run triple for Manhattan in the 4th. That was it – Mike Gardiner goes 8.2 innings and got one out by Doug Jones, S (1) as the Gas Hornets get their first win of the season. Darling (0-1) goes the distance even though a PH with bases juiced might have helped his cause.
|
| Summary |
Finale of 4-1 Steel City for the series was not a surprise. The only question remains is how good are the sluggers – their pitching is tough, hitting looks good, but Manhattan’s pitching was pretty slim. Time will tell.
