Game #1: David Wells (17-6 1.89) vs. Roger Clemens (26-4 1.66)

The heavily favored American League Champion Chicago Demolition would trot out onto the field behind Roger Clemens, the odds on favorite for the Cy Young award, to take on the National League champion Clovis Cougars. Clovis would counter with David Wells, the NL ERA leader, who had provided a steady anchor to the staff all year long.
The first inning passed without either team gaining an advantage. In the second Clovis got a leadoff walk from Steady Eddie Murray who moved over to second on a Jesse Barfield single. Clemens bore down and got Willie Wilson on a fly out but with two out Clovis got some unlikely production from much maligned Dickie Thon. Thon rifled a line drive into left center sending Murray chugging around third. Thinking this was a great opportunity to grab an early run utilizing the bottom of the order Clovis never flashed a stop sign for Barfield either, with the Hobson’s choice of letting the throw go through to the plate or cut it off George Brett decided that cutting it off was the best move. He grabbed the ball and fired it to third and nailed Barfield for the third out but net before Murray crossed the David_Wells90plate with the first run of the series giving Clovis a 1-0 lead.
With the lead Wells went to work. Quintana singled in the second but died there after Ward drove one to the wall and Scioscia flew out. The third saw Boggs single to get things started for Chicago, it looked like the Demolition were getting to Wells when Doran hit a deep drive that Greenwell managed to corral with his back against the wall then Brett hit one up the middle but Thon made a spectacular stop and managed to flip the ball to Reed for the force at second that ended the inning without any damage.
Thon made another great play in the fourth to rob Quintana of a hit. The fifth say Guillen draw a walk but Pena threw his out trying to steal and the inning ended without any more threats. Boggs drew a 6th inning walk but a double play quickly erased the threat. The seventh featured a Strawberry single for Chicago but little else.
Heading into the eighth the home town crowd was getting a bit anxious. Wells remained in complete control however retiring the side easily in the eighth. In the meantime for Clovis the only real offense of any consequence remained the second inning run that they managed to push across. With the ninth inning Chicago came up for their final chance. Wells would face a modern murderer’s row of Brett, Davis, and Strawberry. Brett would go down on an easy ground ball, Davis would hit a chop that Pena pounced on throwing him out by a stride, and the Straw Man would step to the plate. He hit a ball of the handle down to Murray at first who flipped to Wells and that was it. Wells had shut out the power packed Chicago line-up with a masterful 4 hit shutout. Clovis’ 1-0 victory gives them the all-important game one victory.

Final Score: Clovis 1 – Chicago 0
Win: David Wells  (1-0 0.00)
Loss: Roger Clemens (0-1 1.23)

Game #2:  Bud Black (4-6 4.88) vs. Dave Stewart (21-10 2.11)

Clovis would send 17 game winner Bud Black to the mound while Chicago would try to even things up with 21 game winner Dave Stewart taking the hill for the hometown crew.
The game quickly settled into pitcher’s duel of sorts with Stewart showing true mastery on the mound keeping Clovis scoreless through the first eight innings. Black was the happy recipient of some absolutely stellar defense behind him. In the second Daniels singled only to be doubled off first on a strong throw from Barfield. In the third Guillen singled but was doubled off when Boggs lined a bullet to Harris at third who easily doubled of Guillen who was running with the pitch. In the fifth Clovis turned their third double play on a hard ground ball without any unusual heroics. In the sixth Doran lead off by reaching second on an error by Black, moved to third on a ground out but was doubled off when Davis ripped a screamer that found Reed’s glove. Reed fired to third to just nip Doran diving back to the bag for Clovis’ fourth double play of the game. In the seventh Daniels singled and Scioscia followed with a double but the Chicago brain-trust decided not to test Barfield’s arm a second time and held Daniels at third with only one out. Quintana came up with a chance to knock in the go ahead run, he hit it hard but right at Reed, Daniels broke for the plate on contact but Reed’s throw was on the money and Pena slapped the tag on to slay the potential run.
In the eighth Clovis finally broke through Stewart’s armor when Barfield found one in his zone and sent it far and deep into the left field seats for a 1-0 Clovis lead. The advantage was short lived however as Black ran out of whatever kind of magic potion that he had been using to keep Chicago at bay. Boggs led off with a single that he whistled into right bringing Bill Doran to the plate. Doran roped Black’s first pitch over Murray’s head and into the right-field corner. By the time Barfield had tracked it down Boggs was well around third and easily beat the throw home to tie the game up at one apiece. That sent Black to the showers and Randy Myers came on to try and keep the game tied. Chicago managed to load the bases but Ortiz went down swinging to end the inning.Jody_Reed90
With the score knotted at one each in the top of the ninth Henderson went down and Chicago figured it was time to employ the bullpen so with one out the lefty Barnes came on in relief of Stewart to face the left hand hitting Lenny Harris. Clovis went to the bench and called Kent Anderson to pinch hit from the right side and nullify the lefty-lefty advantage that the Demolition had gained. It worked just like Clovis had drawn it up when Anderson singled and Gantner with his speed pinch ran. Greenwell really made things pay off when Gantner took off on the pitch and he grounded a single through the vacant six hole leaving runners at first and third with only one out.
With the possible winning run only ninety feet away Chicago called on Larry Andersen, but when Murray worked a walk to load them up Chicago turned to relief superstar Dennis Eckersley to face Jody Reed. With the Demolition playing back looking for a double play ball of the bat of the slow footed Reed the Clovis second sacker crossed them up when he dropped a perfect suicide squeeze bunt that scored Gantner easily.
In the bottom of the ninth Clovis was clinging to a 2-1 lead when Quintana led off with a single that chased Myers. Lee Smith took over while Chicago sent Turner Ward out to run for Quintana and sent Randy Velarde up to bunt him over to second. Velarde dropped a bunt that dropped weakly in front of the plate. Pena pounced on it, fired to second for the first out and Thon’s relay beat Velarde to complete the double play and clear the bases. With Chicago down to its last out, Boggs hit one into the gap in right for a double putting the tying run in scoring position and bringing up Doran as the possible winning run. Smith worked the outside of the plate before jamming Doran and getting him to lift a pop-up that Reed gathered in for the final out.
The Cinderella Cougars had done it again, eking out a second straight nail biting win over Chicago. Chicago piled up 11 hits but Clovis turned an eye popping 5 double plays to stymie the Demolition. Clovis only garnered 6 hits but they were enough. Myers earned the victory and Smith picked up the save while Barnes was tagged with the loss for Chicago. With the 2-1 win Clovis takes a 2 to 0 game lead in the series.

Final Score: Clovis 2 – Chicago 1
Win: Randy Myers (1-0 0.00)
Loss: Roger Clemens (0-1 1.23)
Save: Lee Smith (1)
Home Runs: Barfield (1)

Series Notes:  The Series shifts to Clovis for games 3, 4 & 5 if necessary.

Game #3:  Doug Drabek (15-11 3.97) vs. Randy Johnson (11-13 4.68)

Game three would see the venue change from Chicago out west to Clovis. The Demolition would send Doug Drabek out to try to right the rapidly sinking Chicago ship while Clovis would try to put it virtually out of reach with Randy Johnson on the mound.
Turner_Ward90The game started fast for Chicago when Brett Launched a Johnson fastball over the fence for a quick lead. In the second Chicago added another when Ward singled with one out and Guillen doubled him in a batter later for a 2-0 Chicago lead. Clovis got one of them back when Murray demolished a Drabek slider for a home run that cut the lead to 2-1.
In the fourth Chicago started to put it all together for the first time in the series when Davis walked, Strawberry singled and Turner walked to load them up for Scioscia who also worked a walk to drive in a run. Guillen rapped into a double play but the run scored making it 4-1. Drabek and Boggs followed with back to back doubles to make it 6-1 and send Johnson to the showers for an early exit.
In the fifth Davis walked and Strawberry took a pitch of the helmet that led to a shouting match between the two benches. The Chicago bench was clearly well aware of how Clovis had hit Andre Dawson in the back of the neck in the LCS knocking him out of the series and didn’t want to see a repeat performance. With runners on first and second Ward blasted a triple that drove both home. Scioscia brought home Ward with a sac fly for a 9-1 lead. The Demolition tacked on two more in the sixth on a Davis home run and Ward’s second triple of the game to put it well out of reach at 11-1. Clovis added a meaningless run in the seventh on an error but the question had already been answered by that time.
That is how it ended with Chicago answering back with an 11-2 pasting of Clovis. The Demolition piled up 12 hits, 8 for extra bases in burying the Cougars. Ward had a pair of triples as well as a single to drive home three runs for Chicago. Drabek went six strong to pick up the win before giving way to the bullpen to mop up the victory. Johnson, who put 10 runners on in his 3.2 innings was saddled with the loss. With the win Chicago pulls back into the series although Clovis still leads 2 games to 1.

Final Score: Chicago 11 – Clovis 2
Win: Doug Drabek  (1-0 1.50)
Loss: Randy Johnson (0-1 14.73)
Save: None
Home Runs: Brett (1), Davis (1), Murray (1)

demolitionGame #4: Kirk McCaskill (13-10 3.44) vs. Dave Stieb (16-13 3.39)

Chicago would send 16 game winner Dave Stieb to the hill to try and tie up the series while Clovis would counter with 13 game winner Kirk McCaskill.
The first inning passed without issue for either team but the second saw Chicago put something together when Davis singled and Strawberry singled him to third. Daniels drew a walk to load them up for Scioscia who lashed a double to left center that scored a pair. Guillen walked to load them up again for Stieb who tried to lay down a squeeze bunt but missed the ball and left Daniels out to dry for the first out. Stieb was not to be thwarted as he tried again with Scioscia at third. Now with two strikes he bunted at it again and missed for strike three with Scioscia coming hard down the line. Big Mike crashed into Pena but he held onto the ball to complete the double play. It was an inning that could have been much worse for Clovis without some stalwart defense from Pena.
In the fourth McCaskill got himself into trouble as he could not find the plate and walked Strawberry and Daniels before Scioscia stepped up to the plate. Scioscia dropped a blooper behind third that went for two bases and sent Strawberry flying home. Guillen drew the walk to load them up with none out as McCaskill had lost all feel for the plate. Stieb wisely decided that bunting wasn’t his thing and lashed one down the third base line but Harris made a nice back hand stop and fired home to cut off the run but it left the bases still loaded. Boggs drew a walk that pushed home a free run for Chicago. With two outs Brett sent one to the wall but Henderson ran it down to keep the score at 4-0 Chicago.
The bottom of the fourth Clovis saw a leadoff single from Henderson followed by a text book hit a run of the bat of Harris to put runners on first and third. Greenwell then banged a double deep to left that scored Henderson and sent Harris to third. Murray launched a high fly that scored Harris and Barfield hit a shot Mike_Scioscia90into right but Greenwell didn’t want to challenge with only one out. Stieb bore down however and got the next two batters to preserve the 4-2 Demolition lead.
In the fifth Clovis got a pair of runners aboard with one out but Chicago flashed a bit of leather of their own turning an around the horn double play to get out of the inning. Stieb finished off Clovis in the sixth before giving way to Nelson. Nelson pitched into the eighth when he got into a little trouble by walking Murray. Clovis sent the lefty Goff up to hit trying to stir a little magic. Chicago countered with Larry Andersen who would have none of it as he retired Goff on a long fly. When Reed doubled sending Murray to third the call went out for Eckersley who walked Anderson to load them up before he got the final out on a Pena fly ball to send it to the ninth with Chicago holding onto a 4-2 lead.
Chicago went down quietly setting up the bottom of the ninth. Eckersley strode to the mound to try and nail it down. Wilson flied out for the first out and Henderson swung through a change up for the second out. Harris came up trying to breathe some life into the Clovis but the Eck would have none of it as he threw it past Harris who couldn’t catch up to the pitch and went down for strike three and the game.
Chicago had done it, down two games to none they have climbed back into a tie by taking two in a row on the road. Mike Scioscia had two doubles for Chicago and knocked in three of the four Demolition runs. Stieb earned the victory while McCaskill took the loss.

Final Score: Chicago 4 – Clovis 2
Win: Dave Stieb (1-0 3.00)
Loss: Kirk McCaskill (0-1 7.20)
Save: Dennis Eckersley (1)
Home Runs: None

Game #5: Roger Clemens (26-4 1.66) vs. David Wells (17-6 1.89)

Looking like the glass slipper is about to shatter Clovis sends game one victor David Wells out to lock horns one more time with Chicago’s ace Roger Clemens in the all-important fifth game.
Things started quickly for Clovis who got a Harris single after Henderson led off with a strikeout. Looking to get the running game going Harris got a good lead and took off for second and slid in under the tag for the steal. Greenwell then drove one deep to left center that easily scored Harris and gave Clovis a quick 1-0 lead.
Wells continued his mastery of the Chicago line-up with a couple of easy innings to start the game. In the third the Demolition put runners on first and third with no outs when Guillen executed a perfect hit and run sending Scioscia over to third. With a great opportunity to tie it up Wells reached back for a little extra and got out of it with a bunt that moved Guillen over but left Scioscia at third followed by a foul pop up and a strikeout to escape without any damage.
In the fifth Scioscia doubled into the corner but Wells struck out the next two before Boggs blasted a drive deep to the wall in left center that easily scored Scioscia to tie it up at 1-1 and end Wells string of 13 straight scoreless innings in the Series. Wells did get the next out to limit the damage to the one run. In the meantime Clemens was on top of his game holding Clovis scoreless since the first inning.David_Wells90
With the score deadlocked at 1 each the two aces settled into a scoreless routine that lasted through nine innings. At the end of regulation play the score was still knotted at one with neither team willing to give an inch. In the tenth Chicago pinch hit for Clemens who had pitched nine full innings giving up only the one first inning run to go along with nine strikeouts. Wells pitched through ten full innings giving up only the single run in the fifth to go along with eight strikeouts. Now the game would be decided by bullpens.
Chicago wasted no time in bringing in Eckersley to hold the line. Looking for some power off the bench Clovis called on Jerry Goff to try to end the game with one swing. Goff came close sending Strawberry to the wall but it stayed in the park for nothing more than a loud out. Harris picked up a single for Clovis but he died at first.
Brett led off the eleventh with a single off of Myers who took over for Wells but he then went through the heart of the Chicago order by retiring Davis, Strawberry, and Daniels in order. Clovis was looking at their second crack at Eckersley but fared no better this time as he retired Murray, Reed, and Wilson in order.
The twelfth inning rolled around with Myers still on the mound for Clovis. Myers retired the first two Chicago batters before Jeff Manto came up to pinch-hit for Eckersley. Manto hit a slow roller toward third that Harris had to bare hand but his throw couldn’t beat the hustling Manto. The Demolition opted for a quicker pair of legs and sent Nixon out to pinch run. Nixon stole second putting a runner in scoring position but Boggs hit a fly ball out to left that Henderson ran down for the final out.
Chicago sent Andersen out for the bottom of the twelfth to face Thon. Dickie doubled into the gap in right giving Clovis the opening they were looking for. Sensing that this would be the inning of decision Clovis sent out speedy Darryl Hamilton to pinch run. Pena failed to put down a bunt and Gantner struck out pinch hitting for Myers. That left Hamilton at second with Henderson coming to the plate. With two outs Rickey bounced one slowly toward short. Guillen grabbed it but anxious about Henderson’s incredible speed getting down the line airmailed the throw over past Brett at first sending Hamilton around third and across the plate for the winning run!
The Clovis bench erupted mobbing Hamilton and Henderson whose collective legs had effectively won the game for the Cougars. Clovis takes game 5 and now stands one win away from upsetting the mighty Chicago Demolition. Wells was fabulous through 10 innings while Harris led the offense with 4 hits, one run and one stolen base. Clemens was just as strong for Chicago while Scioscia had another strong game with 3 hits including a pair of doubles and a run scored. Andersen took the tough loss for the Demolition.

Final Score: Clovis 2 – Chicago 1
Win: Randy Myers (2-0 0.00)
Loss: Larry Andersen (0-1 0.00)
Save: None
Home Runs: None

Game #6: Bud Black (4-6 4.88) vs. Dave Stewart (21-10 2.11)

The games shifted back to Chicago which meant that the DH was back in play. Chicago would send Dave Stewart out to try and hold the line against Clovis who would counter with Bud Black on the hill. Clovis was now only one win away from closing it out and making the Cinderella slippers a permanent part of the wardrobe.
In the first Henderson led off with a walk and when Harris followed with a successful hit and run that scooted through the left side sending the speedy Henderson over to third Clovis was ready for business. Clovis wanted to use their speed to advantage so when Greenwell came up they flashed him the sign for a second straight hit and run but he couldn’t take advantage and chopped one down the line that sent Harris over to second but that was all. Steady Eddie Murray picked up the pieces when he rifled one into left center that sent both runners home and gave Clovis a quick 2-0 lead.
In the Chicago first Boggs got on with a single but when the Demolition thought they would try a bit of the running game Tony Pena put a quick end to that idea when he gunned down Boggs trying to steal. The rest of the inning passed without incident as did the second but in the third Eddie Murray came up with two outs and caught a rare Dave Stewart mistake that he deposited into the bleachers for a 3-0 Clovis lead. After Black retired Chicago in the third it was Clovis holding a 3-0 lead. Still a lot of baseball to go but the small contingent of Cougar fans who had made the trip east were starting to get excited.
George_Brett90The fourth passed quickly with Clovis going down in order and Chicago being retired when Doran grounded into a double play to erase Boggs and Brett grounded out. The fifth saw Clovis use the same formula to get started as in the first; a Henderson walk and a Harris hit and run that was again executed perfectly. Greenwell then hit a long fly ball that sent Henderson home with the Cougars fourth run of the game. Stewart managed to get out of the inning when Harris was gunned down by Scioscia who was clearly upset with the liberties Clovis was taking on the base paths.
In the home half of the fifth Chicago got a runner to third but couldn’t score when Scioscia just got under a pitch and sent it out to Gladden for the third out. The sixth inning passed without anyone scoring although Clovis did get a double from Barfield while Chicago got a base hit from Guillen but he too was thrown out trying to steal by Pena which didn’t help the cause as Boggs then got on base after a Jody Reed error but that was it for the inning.
Heading into the seventh Clovis was now leading 4-0 with Stewart and Black still on the mound. Stewart managed to get through the top of the inning without giving up a run in what would be his last inning of work. In the bottom of the seventh Black was still in full control when he got the first out but Davis drew the first walk of the game for Chicago and an out later Ward singled sending Davis over to third and bringing up Scioscia. Big Mike hooked one down the Nixon out to run and Clovis decided it was time to pull Black and bring in Lee Smith. Daniels greeted Smith with a single that plated Nixon and made it a one run game.
The eighth started with Clovis holding a slim 4-3 lead. Nelson took over from Stewart and retired the Cougars despite a Murray double. Smith went back out for the bottom of the eighth with Clovis needing only six more outs and the series was theirs!
Boggs led off with a walk and when Doran lined one off Smith’s glove things got very interesting. The Cougars had seen enough from Smith and brought in Myers, the lefty, to face Brett. George ruined the strategy when he sent a ball into the gap for a double that scored both runners and gave Chicago a 5-4 lead! On the throw home Brett took third and then scored when Davis hit a slow roller to Reed that didn’t have enough on it to enable him to get rid of the ball in time. Chicago had come back from the brink of elimination to now build a 6-4 lead.
Nelson remained in the game for the pivotal ninth. He retired the pinch hitter Anderson on a pop-up and then got Hamilton on a fly ball before Gladden came up as the last chance for Clovis. Nelson was still on the mound although any runner would have probably have resulted in a call to the bullpen. Nelson fired one right down the middle but all Gladden could do was send it out to medium center were Davis squeezed it for out number three and Chicago had tied the series up at 3 wins each!
Chicago had won game three 6-4 with a thrilling comeback win, scoring three in the 7th and 8th to force a winner-take-all game seven. Nelson picked up the win with two stellar innings pitched while Brett was the hitting star for the Demolition driving home the tying and go ahead runs with his eighth inning double. Murray had three RBI and hits for Clovis including a homer and a double. Smith took the loss while Myers was tagged with a blown save.

Final Score: Chicago 6 – Clovis 4
Win: Gene Nelson (1-0 0.00)
Loss: Lee Smith (0-1 7.71)
Save: None
Home Runs: Murray (2)

Game #7: Kirk McCaskill (13-10 3.44) vs. Doug Drabek (15-11 3.97)

This was it, game 7 for all the marbles. Chicago would send Doug Drabek who had won game three out to face Cougar hurler Kirk McCaskill who had lost game four. The atmosphere in the park was electric as the two teams came out for introductions for the final game of the season.
The first started out with the pattern that Clovis had ridden hard to this point; a Henderson walk and a hit and run off the bat of Harris but this one couldn’t make it through the infield but it did send Rickey over to second. Greenwell hit a sharp comebacker to Drabek but his throw sailed past Brett and allowed Henderson to come around to score the game’s first run. Chicago couldn’t answer in their half so Clovis held a quick 1-0 lead after one.
The second started with a Reed walk followed by a Thon fielder’s choice before Pena lined one off of Drabek’s glove for a single and Wilson followed with a single into right that loaded the bases. The Demolition was taking no chances and came out to get Drabek and replaced him with Dave Stieb. Stieb had the unenviable task of facing Rickey Henderson with his great eye for the strike zone. Henderson did just what you would expect working a walk that brought home a run and kept the bases loaded. Stieb was clearly angry with himself but got Harris to pop up for the second out of the inning before Greenwell came up. Greenwell also worked a walk as Stieb’s was now steamed over what he thought was the ump squeezing him. That might have influenced the first pitch to Murray; a fastball right in the fat part of the zone that Eddie hammered high off the top of the wall in right. Wilson scored, Henderson followed right behind him, and Greenwell came around from first and scored as well. Murray took third on the throw but the killing blow had been struck, Clovis now lead 6-0!Eddie_Murray90
In the meantime McCaskill had things well in hand on the mound for the Cougars, working through the second, third, fourth without any problems that a stout defense couldn’t handle. Larry Andersen took over on the mound for Chicago in the fifth matching zeroes with McCaskill through the fifth and sixth innings.
In the seventh Clovis went down without scoring despite another Eddie Murray double. In the bottom of the seventh Daniels doubled and with two outs Larkin, pinch hitting for Andersen, doubled over the third base bag sending Daniels home with the first Demolition run of the game. That chased McCaskill and Carmen came in to get Quintana and end the threat.
The eighth went by with both teams retired in order. Clovis came up in the top of the ninth with a commanding 6-1 lead. With Eckersley now on the mound for Chicago he easily retired the three Clovis batters sent up to face him to set up the bottom of the ninth and the Demolition’s last chance!
Davis led off for Chicago with a single that sent Smith to the showers and brought in Randy Myers. It was going to be Myers game now. Strawberry ripped one back up the middle that deflected off of Myers’ glove putting two runners on. With Daniels up the clearly rattled Myers balked sending runners to second and third and then walked Daniels to load the bases with no one out. Mike Scioscia with 7 runs batted in for the series already came to the plate. Myers bore down and got him to hit one back up the middle that Reed grabbed and tossed to Thon who fired to first to complete the double play. Davis scored from third on the play but now there were two outs and Chicago was down to its last out and Clovis was one out away from a seemingly impossible series win. Larkin, who stayed in the game, drew a walk as the final out was proving elusive. Now it was Randy Velarde; two quick strikes put him deep in a hole. Myers looked in and fired, change up and Velarde was way out in front with a weak swing for strike three!! Clovis had won 6-2 taking game seven and the series.
The Cougars mobbed Myers on the mound as the park fell into stunned silence. The Cougars had done it, pulling off the upset over the heavily favored Chicago Demolition 4 games to 3. McCaskill earned the win with a commanding performance over 6.2 innings while Drabek took the loss. Murray was the hitting star for Clovis with the big three run double in the second to drive a stake into the Demolition heart. Eddie had three runs batted in and three hits including a pair of doubles.

Final Score: Clovis 6 – Chicago 2
Win: Kirk McCaskill (1-1 3.86)
Loss: Doug Drabek (1-1 4.91)
Save: None
Home Runs: None
