Series versus two middling teams
Game #1:
Black Bears jump out in the top of the first with two solo shots. The Grays respond with a 5 spot in the bottom half, Appier settles down and the Grays cruise from there. MBB Sierra went 2-4 R HR RBI. GER Venable was 3-5 3R RBI 2-2b, Alomar 3-4 2R RBI 2b, Jefferson 3-4 2R 5RBI 2HR and Caminit and Parker also went 2-4 on the day.

Game #2:
GER Hernandez comes off the DL and gets a start. It didn’t go well. MBB Bonds 2-2 4R, Sierra 3-5 3R, Williams 3-4 3R 4RBI, O’Brien 2-4 2RBI and Lind 2-5 R RBI 3b. MBB Liebrandt allowed 2 over 7IP and advanced to 9-3 on the year. GER Pettis, McFarlane and Parker each had 2 hits.

Game #3:
Best game of the series. Black Bears jump out with 2 in the top of the first and again the Grays respond. This time with a 3 spot in the bottom half. Crews and Aguilera cannot hold for the Grays and allow 4 in the 8th. The Grays come back scoring 3 in the bottom of the 9th and the game ended with runners in  scoring position. Bears Sierra went 3-5 2R RBI, Bonds 3-5 3R RBI 3b HR, Williams 2-5 RBI, Carter 2-4 R 2RBI 2-2b. Grays Jefferson was 2-4 R 2RBI 2b.

Game #4:
Black Bears jump out with 2 in the first yet again. Grays can never catch them. Bears Key allowed 2ER over 6IP. Bonds was 2-3 R RBI 2b, Galarraga 2-4 2R and Newman 2-3 3RBI 2b. Grays Alomar went 2-5 R 2RBI and Gagne 2-4.
Black Bears 6-4.
Game #5:
Black Bears don’t jump out into the lead until the 2nd in this one with a 3 spot. Grays tied it in the 5th and put it away in the 8th with a 4 spot. Bears Williams was 3-4 2R RBI HR, Galarraga 2-4 R 2RBI 2-2b, Carter 2-4 R 3RBI HR. Grays MacFarlane went 2-4 R 2RBI 2b, Jefferson 2-3 R and Caminiti 2-4.

With a skeleton crew the Grays take 2 of 5 from the Black Bears

Four Quakes pitchers, anchored by Nolan Ryan, combine for a 2-hit hutout. Glenn Davis hits a 2-run HR in the 1st, giving Cali all it would need.

Great pitching continues for the Quakes, as Gardner leads the Quakes to a solid 1-run effort. Four HRs didn’t hurs, including 2 by Maas, who finished the game 2-5, 2 R, 4 RBI, and 2 HR.

Solid pitching continued, but the offense quieted down. Game 3 was the first of three 1-run games in a row. Maas hit another 2-run shot, but Edwards lost the game by giving up 4 ER in 5 IP.

Game #4:
Ben McDonald pitched well in his first California start, giving up 1 ER in 6 IP. The bullpen did him no favors, though. Up 3-1 in the 9th, Frey gave up 2 ER to tie the game, and Harvey gave up 1 ER in the top of the 11th, thanks to a Julio Franco solo HR. Another Maas HR tied the game in the bottom of the 11th, and a solo Borders HR won the game for the Quakes in the bottom of the 12th.

Game #5:
Delucia, who’s burning the midnight oil, pitches 6+ strong IP, giving up 0 ER, while the Quakes take a 4-0 lead into the 9th. Pete Harnisch, trying to get his IPs, pitches a 1-2-3 8th, but gives up 5 hits and 3 ER while recording 2 outs in the top of the 9th. Up 4-3, with 2 outs and runners on 1st and 3rd, Harnisch elicits the Spike Owen ground out to end the game.
