California Quakes @ Montana Cutthroats
Preview
Two potential hopeful playoff competitors square off in an American League East battle. The California Quakes visit the Montana
Cutthroats. The Cutthroats enter the third week of the season with a 1 game advantage over the favored Chicago Demolition and 4 games up on the Quakes.
Game #1:
Glenn Davis hits a PH 2-run HR in the top of the 9th to lead the Quakes past the Cutthroats 6-4 in the series opener. California lived on the long ball. Down 2-0 in the 6th, Kevin Maas hit a 3-run HR to cap a four run inning to give the Quakes a 4-2 lead. Montana tied the score on a Brian Harper 2-run shot in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game. Davis’ heroics won it in the 9th. Steve Frey got the win with 2 1/3 perfect innings in relief.
FINAL – CAL 6 MCT 4
Game #2:
Paul O’Neill‘s 2 HRs and 4 RBI propelled the Quakes to a 2-0 series lead. California built an 8-0 lead until Montana finally scored in the 7th. The Cutthroats scored three more in the 8th and actually got the tying run to the plate but were denied a comeback bid. Gregg Jefferies got on base 5 times in the win with 2 hits and 3 walks. Steve Farr was great as he went 7 innings and only gave up 3 hits for the Quakes.
FINAL – CAL 8 MCT 4
Game #3:
Francisco Cabrera‘s 3-run HR in the 2nd helped lead the Cutthroats to their first win of the series. Most of the scoring was early in this one as the Quakes jumped to a 2-0 in the 2nd on a Jose Canseco solo HR and Mackey Sasser RBI double. Cabrera’s HR in the 2nd put Montana up to stay and they added a key insurance run in the 3rd on Alvin Davis‘ RBI double. The Quakes got within one in the 7th on
Glenn Davis‘ RBI triple, but the Cutthroats bullpen shut the door for the 4-3 win.
FINAL – MCT 4 CAL 3
Game #4:
Nolan Ryan and Steve Frey combined to 2-hit the Montana Cutthroats and came up on the losing end of a 3-1 battle. Montana got the most of both of their hits. In the 1st, Mariano Duncan‘s double drove home Von Hayes who had walked. After California tied the game thanks to an error that extended the inning and allowed Pat Borders to double home Jose Canseco, Montana took the lead again in the 8th. Franklin Stubbs‘ 2-run HR was the winner as Dennis Cook, Mark Thurmond, and Paul Assenmacher scattered 10 hits to make Montana a winner.
FINAL – MCT 3 CAL 1
Game #5:
California regained the series advantage with a 7-4 come-from-behind win. Montana looked in control as they built a 4-1 lead into the 6th with Ben McDonald looking sharp on the hill. The Cutthroats got three solo HRs from Mariano Duncan, Von Hayes, and Sam Horn to build the lead. However, California got a 3-run HR from John Olerud and solo HR from Kevin Maas one batter later to turn the tables. The Quakes added two more insurance runs in the 7th.
FINAL – CAL 7 MCT 4
Game #6: The Montana Cutthroats tied the series at 3-3 with an exciting 10 inning affair that saw the lead see saw. Montana led first on Sam Horn‘s 2-run HR in the 2nd. An Ozzie Smith RBI double in the 3rd and John Olerud RBI single in the 6th tied the game. California then appeared to be in position to win as Glenn Davis hit another clutch 9th inning HR to make it 3-2. However, Montana fought back as an error set up a game tying SF by Horn. The Cutthroats then won it with another SF this time by Kevin Seitzer. Interestingly, California ran out of a few innings with 2 caught stealings and at least 2 putouts at home or this game may have been different.FINAL – MCT 4 CAL 3 (10 innings)
Game #7: The Quakes scored four runs in the 1st inning and then held on for dear life to win the series with a 5-4 win. The four run 1st was highlighted by a two-run error, a bases loaded walk, and John Olerud‘s RBI double. Montana got one back in the 2nd on Kevin Seitzer‘s RBI single. But California increased the lead to 5-1 on a Gregg Jefferies SF in the 4th. Montana then chipped away one run at a time. They scored single runs in the 6th (Alvin Davis solo HR) and 7th (unearned run) to make it 5-3. Then in the 9th, three singles by Von Hayes, Hal Morris, and Ellis Burks brought it to 5-4 with runners on 1st and 3rd with only 1 out. Steve Frey then got a game ending Double Play to win it for the Quakes.FINAL – CAL 5 MCT 4
Summary
The Quakes take the series 4 games to 3. Interesting series. Very competitive. Pitching was pretty solid as expected. Only three times
did one of the teams get 10 or more hits and twice that team lost. California pulls within 3 games of the Cutthroats in the standings,
while Montana slips to second place behind Chicago. Should be a fun season!
