Andy Allanson has a big game (3 for 3, 2 rbi and a walk to pace the Manhattan offense in support of Tim Leary‘s 5 hit pitching over 7 innings as the Gas Hornets take the opener 5-1. Leary gets the win (5-1) Bankhead the loss (4-5). |

Game #2: |
The 3, 4, 5, 6,and 7 hitters in the Manhattan lineup each had an rbi in another 5-1 Manhattan win. Gas Hornets scored 2 in the first on back-to-back rbi doubles from Joyner and Dawson. Clovis cut it to 2-1 in 2nd on a Weiss rbi double. But then a 3 run 5th for the Gas Hornets put the game away. Clovis did mount a threat in 8th loading the bases with 1 out, but Leach was able to quell the threat and get the save (2). Reuschel gets the win (6-4), Bannister the loss (3-6) |

Game #3: |
Jimmy Key goes 7 innings yielding 6 hits and an unearned run in running his record to 3-2 as Manhattan takes this game 4-2. Sax hit a 1 out solo HR (3) in the 1st, Clovis got it back in the 4th but Dawson homered (5) in the bottom half to regain the lead. 2 more in the 7th put the game away. Brantley gets 3 hits for Clovis including a double and rbi. Reardon gets the save (10). John Smiley (3-4) takes the loss. |
| Game #4: | This game was decided in the 1st. Henderson leads off for the Cougars and draws a walk. Gladden follows and is hit by the pitch. Brantley pops out for the 1st out. Murray then grounds one to 3rd, close enough for Flannery to tag the bag, but he wasn’t quick enough to beat the flying Murray at first. Howell then walks to load them up and Pena follows one to deep, deep left that is caught at the wall by Dawson to end the Clovis threat. Bottom half, Yount singles, Sax singles, Joyner slugs a 3 run HR (7) and Dawson backs it up with a solo shot (6) and it’s 4-0 with no outs. And that’s the final score. Pete Smith tosses a 3 hit shut-out with 3 walks and that hit batsmen. Smith is now 3-2. Sutcliffe takes the loss and is 5-3. |

Schofield drives in 2 in the 2nd and the Cougars get 1 back in the 3rd on a Brantly rbi single. In the bottom half Dawson and Bass each get rbis to make it 4-1 Manhattan. Leary again is going strong, pitching 7 and scattering 7 hits. He gives up up an Rbi single to Henderson in the 7th (scoring Gladden who goes 3 for 4 – 3 doubles) to make it 4-2. Dave Smith and Reardon (S 11) hold the Cougars scoreless the rest of the way for a 4-2 Gas Hornet win. Leary goes to 6-1, Bub Black drops to 2-1. |

| Game #1: | The Cutthroats send Joaquin Andujar to the mound to face off against Jose Rijo of the Tigers. Jesse Barfield in for the achy Tim Raines, scores the game’s first run with a collision at the plate during the bottom of the 3rd, where Montana’s backstop Darrell Miller dropped the throw from John Morris. The Top of the 4th, Montana had a chance to score as Ricky Jordan tags up from 3rd, only to get gunned down by Dave Winfield. The Tigers took that momentum into the bottom half of the inning, as Joe Carter scored off of a Joey Meyer single. Jose Rijo pitches 6 shutout innings, striking out 5, while only allowing 3 hits. Brian Holton pitches 2 solid innings in relief, racking up 4 K’s in the process. Doug Jones gets Save #9. Ricky Jordan went 3-for-4 for the Cutthroats. FINAL SCORE: Traverse City 2, Montana 0 |
| Game #2: | Montana sends Steve Ontiveros to the mound against Greg Maddux. Maddux got bumped up a slot in the rotation, attempting to change his early numbers. Bottom of the 1st, Pete Stanicek (2B) and Ellis Burks (RF) collide going for a Paul Molitor fly. Stanicek out for 12 days, Burks out for two. Dave Winfield executes the Hit & Run as Johnny Ray scores. Paul Molitor steals second, and scores off of a Joe Carter single. Tigers up 2-0 early on. Bottom of 3rd, Paul Molitor reaches 1st on a dropped pop-up by Darrell Miller. Molitor follows by stealing 2nd, as Darrell Miller overthrows the ball over the shortstop’s head, Molitor reaches third easily (2 errors by Miller), the next pitch, Molitor scores off a passed ball by Miller. Dave Winfield gets on with a single, and moves to second on YET, another passed ball! Which leads to an RBI single by newly acquired Pete O’Brien. Tigers lead 4-0. Bottom of the 4th, The Tigers add to their lead with an RBI triple by Johnny Ray, Ray would score off of an RBI single by Winfield. Tigers 6, Cutthroats 0 after four. Greg Maddux would give up a solo HR to Steve Balboni in the top of the 7th, Winfield would get the run back with a solo HR in the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers try to get Maddux the complete game, but decide to bring in a Juan Agosto to be safe, after Maddux gave up a two-run HR to Gene Larkin. Dave Winfield went 4-for-4, with a HR, 3 RBI & 2 runs. Johnny Ray added 3 hits, 3 runs & 2 RBI — while Greg Maddux went 8.2 innings, allowing 5 hits & 3 ER’s while striking out 6, walking 2. FINAL SCORE: Traverse City 9, Montana 3 |
| Game #3: | Willie Frasier (1-5, 6.95 ERA) faces off against the Candy-Man, John Candelaria (5-3, 4.19 ERA) Bottom of the 2nd, the Tigers once again strike first, as Johnny Ray (after getting his 5th triple of the season) scores off of a two-out single by Dave Winfield. These two are putting together a pretty good series. Top of the 4th, Hal Morris delivers a two-out, two-run double. Candelaria pitches 5 innings, of 0 ER/2 runs, with 8 K’s; while Frasier put together a pretty good outing of 5.1 innings, 1 ER, 4 hits, 2 K’s & a walk. Bottom of the 6th, with one out, Winfield flies to center & the Tigers get aggressive by having Molitor tag up, in which Oddibe McDowell doubles up Molitor on his throw to third. The Cutthroats seem to have the Tigers in this one, until Rafael Ramirez hit a game-tying solo HR in the bottom of the 8th! This one goes to extras… In the bottom of the 19th, Donn Pall on the mound for Montana, walks Johnny Ray. Paul Molitor executes the Hit & Run. With runners on 1st & 3rd with Dave Winfield stepping up to the plate, the Cutthroats elect to intentionally walk Winfield. Joe Carter steps up and pokes a single into right-field — this one is over! FINAL SCORE: Traverse City 3, Montana 2 (10 Innings) |
| Game #4: | Montana is hoping a day-off helps get the Cutthroats back on track as they send Mike Smithson to the mound to take on Scott Terry of the Tigers. Bottom of the 1st, Paul Molitor steals 2nd (and goes to 3rd on another wild throw by Darrell Miller), Mookie Wilson hits one right to the 2nd baseman in the deep infield, as Molitor races to home, scoring on the fielder’s choice. Mookie eventually scores, off of a failed DP attempt on a ball hit by Joe Carter. Joe Carter eventually steals 2nd, for the team’s 3rd steal that inning. Bottom of the 3rd, Dave Winfield strikes again with a solo HR off of Smithson. Bob Boone would add two more runs, with a two-run double. Tigers lead 5-0 after three innings. The game quickly gets out of control, as Pete O’Brien gets himself a two-out, two-run double. The Tigers add another run on another error by Montana. Tigers lead 8-0. Dave Winfield adds another HR with a solo HR. His early numbers are projecting to be bigger than his actual 1988 numbers. Ellis Burks back from his injury, belted a late two-run HR, but that’s all she wrote, as Montana loses once again. FINAL SCORE: Traverse City 10, Montana 3 |
| Game #5: | Bob Forsch against Bob Knepper, as the Cutthroats look to avoid the sweep. The Tigers fans have packed the stadium here in Traverse City, as the fans are feeling the excitement in the air. Not a good omen for the Cutthroats, as the Tigers score first with an RBI single by Johnny Ray. Mookie Wilson led the inning off with a triple. Ray scores off a sac fly by Pete O’Brien. Not everything is good for Tigers, Bob Knepper steps off the mound after one inning of work and will be out for 22 days! Looks like the Tigers will be making a call to their farm for Eric King. Back to the action, bottom of the 4th, two more RBI singles by Bob Boone & Johnny Ray, as the Tigers lead 5-0. Bottom of the 5th, Jesse Barfield adds an RBI single. The 7th Inning was a trade-off of solo HR’s by Montana & T.C., with solo HR’s from Ellis Burks (Montana) & Dave Winfield (T.C.). Tigers get a little sloppy on defense, as Ricky Jordan eventually hits a two-run double, bringing the game in reach at 7-3. Bob Boone hits a solo HR for the Tigers in the bottom of the 8th. Brian Holton pitches four inning of relief for his 2nd win of the season. FINAL SCORE: Traverse City 8, Montana 4 |

Will Clark smacked a solo HR for the Bears. Mike Schooler (1-0, 0.00) won in relief after blowing the save, Niedenfuer came on in the 9th to earn the the save (4). |

The Wings again get two in the 1st, this time off Mike Moore. The Bears tied it in the 3d, and both teams score a run in the 7th and the game went into xtra innings tied a three. Birtsas allowed a couple Bears on base in the 10th and Nelson came in to end the threat, however Ron Gant blooped a single over 2d to score Will Clark from 2d with the winner. Honeycutt got the win in relief (4-2, 0.69). |

Bobby Witt got plenty of support and while allowing 6 hits and 5 walks, got the win (3-3, 3.54), John Cerutti came on in the 7th and finished up for the save (1). Rick Schu provided most of the support with 2 triples and 5 RBIs. The Wings stole 6 bases, Hatcher stole 4 bases. The Bears out hit the Wings 10-9 but had a much larger advantage in runs. |

Greg Swindell (5-2, 2.66) with a masterful 3-hit shutout. Ron Gant HRd and drove in two, but Claudell Washington doubled and drove in 4 runs to provide all the support Swindell needed. Hillegas (1-6, 6.19) suffered another defeat. Leonard stole another base bringing to 14 the number of steals the Wings have in the series. |

Strong starting pitching again for the Bears as Dopson (5-2, 3.25) allows only one run into the 8th before Honeycutt takes over (S2). Bruce Hurst (7-3, 2.70) absorbs the loss. Backup catcher Mike Fitzgerald led the hitting with a triple and a HR, 3 for 4, 3 scored and 2 RBIs. Andre Thomas broke a slump to smack a 3-run HR. The Wings Thompson stole another base, Pagliarulo, the former Bear, had the RBI for the the Wings. |
