1987 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

The Demolition of Chicago went in as underdogs against the California Quakes who looked to take home their first ever American League Pennant.  The Quakes were favored and odds of them winning the series were 3 to 2.   Just as the odds were, that’s how ever game in the series played out.  Five one-run games.  It couldn’t have been a closer series, with many lead changes, solid pitching and once again every game was a one run affair.

Game #1 – Roger Clemens (28-5  3.04) vs. Mike Scott (21-9  3.12)

Chicago got out to a 1-0 lead when Kal Daniels drove in Wade Boggs with a 2-out single to score the first run of the game in the top of the 1st.  Eric Davis scored on a Kent Hrbek single to give the Demolition a 2-0 lead after one half inning of play.  In the 4th it was Hrbek again this time pulling a Mike Scott fastball down the line in right for a solo shot.   California kicked in for 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th when Darrel Evans scored on a Carlton Fisk sacrifice fly & Kevin Bass scored on a Buddy Bell single.   After five complete innings the Demolition were up by one.   The Quakes struck again in the bottom of the 6th off Clemens.  With a runner at third, Ozzie Guillen fielded a grounder deep in the hole and his only play was first base (He got the out) but the run scored.   Later in the inning with George Brett at third base, Darrel Evans showed off his power and blasted a 2-run Home Run to deep center, which put the Quakes in the drivers seat up 5-4 after 6 full.   In the 7th Chicago scored a single run after Bill Doran Doubled, Ken Phelps did the same driving in Doran.   Chicago’s bullpen settled in nicely as Goose Gossage, Dale Mohoric, Rob Murphy held the Quakes off the board.
