Series Preview |
Michigan travels to Manhattan to try and make a dent in the 11 game lead the Gas Hornets enjoy as the series begins… |
|
Game #1: |
Michigan scores 3 in the first on Noke HR (27) and hangs on as Gas Hornets can only dent Terrell (W 14-5) and company for 2 runs (Dawson (39) and Jacoby (36) HRs). Henneman gets save 36. Leary suffers another tough loss (0-4). |
|
Game #2: |
Manhattan comes back to take game 2 after Burke blows the save in the 9th (BS 3). Winning run a walk-off single by Dawson in the 13th, 4-3 Manhattan. Davis (19) homers for Manhattan. WP Righetti (10-2), LP Williams (6-3). |
|
Game #3: |
For the 2nd straight day Michigan and Manhattan go to extra innings and for the 2nd straight game a Dawson walk-off single plates the winning run, this time in the 12th inning. Manhattan wins 5-4. Nokes slams another HR (28) as does Bo Jackson (6). Dawson hits another for the Gas Hornets (he also doubled). WP Reed (2-1), LP Williamson (6-4). |
| Game #4: | With a 3-2 score in game 1, 4-3 in game 2 and 5-4 in game 3, this one should have been 6-5 – but it wasn’t. And you might say it should have been a Manhattan victory, but it wasn’t. Up 4-3 in the 7th, Zane Smith leaves with 1 out and a runner on 2nd. Michigan then scores 2 in the 7th, 2 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to win going away, 9-4. 4 Gas Hornet errors didn’t help, but Ripken did hit 2 HRs (28, 29) and drive in 3 and G.Davis had 3 hits and 4 rbis for the Marauders. DeShaies was pleasantly surprised with the W (9-8) and Williams racked up save #2 pitching the final 3 innings. Reardon was the one throwing gas on the fire and took the loss (3-4 and BS 4). |
|
Game #5: |
Game 4 turned out to be the only none 1 run game of the series. Alexander (W 12-4) and Langston (L 11-10) hooked up for a pitcher’s duel in this one, but a 3 run 4th for Manhattan (and a 2 run single by Alexander in the inning) proved to be the margin as the Gas Hornets won 3-2. Jacoby started the inning with a solo HR (37). Samuel had 2 of the 4 Michigan hits – a double and triple and scored a run. Burke pitched the final two for the save (29). |
|
Game #6: |
An rbi single by Sax in the bottom of the 8th was the only run in this game (an even better pitcher’s duel) as Manhattan wins another squeaker 1-0 and give Leary his first victory of the year (1-4). He went 8 giving up 4 hits and fanning 6. Terrell went 7, 3 hits, 0 runs, no decision. Williamson (6-5) took the loss (his 3rd of the series). |
|
Game #7: |
Game 7 was a 1 run contest – but it never seemed that close. Key (W 19-5) went 6 innings, 2 hits, no runs and left the game with a 6-0 lead. Normally reliable DeWayne Buice then gave up 4 runs in 1.2 innings including a 2 run HR by Palmeiro (6), 3 walks, 3 hits and a WP. Samuel also homered for Michigan (23) and doubled as well. Tanana (L 8-11) struggled over the 4.1 innings he pitched giving up 6 hits and 5 runs – 3 of the hits were homers (Dawson 2 of them (41,42) and Davis (20)). Righetti pitched the 9th for the save (5) in spite of Samuels HR. |
|
Series Summary * |
6 1 run games, 5 of them won by Manhattan leads to a 5-2 Gas Hornets series win over Michigan and increase their division lead to 14 games (and a 13 game Magic Number). 52 one run games for Manhattan now – fortunately they’ve won 2 of every 3. |
