· Michigan Marauders @ Manhattan Gas Hornets |
|
| Series Preview | NL East showdown between visiting Michigan (43-31, 2nd place) and the hometown Manhattan Gas Hornets (48-22, .686). Should be an interesting series as the Marauders are way better on the road (24-12) then they are at home and the Gas Hornets are quite a bit better at home (27-7) than on the road, although they do possess .583 winning percentage on the road. Both team are currently on 9-1 streaks over the past 10 games – Michigan has a chance to tighten up the NL East race.
How they stack up: |
| Game #1: | Deshaies (6-3, 4.38 era) vs. Doyle Alexander (5-2, 2.72). Deshaies no decision in 1 start against Manhattan, Alexander is 1-1 in his two starts. A Maldonado 2 out single in the first gets the scoring going for Michigan, 1-0. Pitchers duel into the bottom of the 6th when Alexander leads off with single (2nd hit for Manhattan). Felder pinchruns, WP, and then Yount singles him home with 1 out to tie the game, but DP ends the inning. Bream 1 out solo HR (6) in 10th puts Marauders up 2-1. Henneman in , lead off single for Williams, but a failed sac, a Whiff and FC ends the game, 2-1 Michigan. WP Williams (4-0), S Henneman (19), LP Leach (4-1). |
| Game #2: | Langston (7-5, 3.13 era, 1-1 vs. MGH) vs. Clancy (5-4, 4.35 era, 1-0 vs MIC). Another pitchers duel broken up in the 8th on a PH homer by Walling (his 1st of the year, batting for Langston). The feat is matched in the bottom of the 9th when Jacoby HRs (25) to tie the game with 2 outs (off Henneman). 10th inning Marauder magic? Leadoff double by Maldonado (Buice comes in), Webster singles, runners at the corners, no outs. Samuel grounds to Sax (infield in), he fires home and they have Maldonado (except Davis drops the ball). 2-1 Michigan, still no outs. With 2 strikes, Henneman grounds out, the runners move up. Nokes singles past the drawn in infied, 3-1 and Palmeiro squeezes home another run, 4-1. Game ends in bottom half when Sax singles and turns wide at 1st and gets picked off. WP Henneman (1-1, BS 3), LP Reardon (2-3) – and Williams injured for 14 days when Langston drills him. |
| Game #3: | Terrell (8-4, 4.18 era, 0-2 vs. MGH) vs. Z.Smith (6-1, 2.72 era, no decision in 1 start vs. MIC) Maldonado 2 run HR (9) in 4th gets the Marauders up 2-0. Davis cuts it to 2-1 with his 13th HR of the year in the 5th. A Felder single and SB followed by Griffin single ties in the 5th. Back to back to back singles by Manhattan gets a 1 out threat going in the 7th. PH Durham hits a moonshot and Davis holds at 3rd, but Yount hits a 2 out 2 run single to give Manhattan their 1st lead of the series 4-2. 2 out rbi single by Davis in 8th adds some insurance. Righetti gets the final 4 outs in the game to preserve the win (S 2). WP Zane Smith (7-1), LP Terrell (8-5). |
| Game #4: | Tanana (5-6, 3.51 era, 0-2 vs MGH) vs. Key (12-2, 2.23 era, 1-0 vs MIC) Joyner solo HR (13) in 2nd for 1-0 lead for Manhattan. Samuel leads off 4th with a triple, but Key works out it with a groundout runner can’t advance, a whiff (Brunansky) and Gaetti pop out in front of home – BUT WAIT, Davis drops it, it’s fair and Samuel scores on E2 to tie the game. Joyner gets Manhattan back on top in 4th with 2 out rbi single, 2-1. Tanana goes out with arm problems in the 7th (12 days). Slaughts gets Michigans 2nd hit of the game in the 8th – solo HR (5) to tie it at 2. Games goes to 10th, and Davis walks to lead off the bottom half against DiPino. Reynolds to PR – he moves up on a WP. Felder in to PR – moves to 3rd on Griffin SAC. With IF in, Gladden hits one through to get the walk off rbi single and Manhattan takes it 3-2 to even the series. WP Buice (3-2), LP DiPino (0-1). |
| Game #5: | Higuera (7-4, 3.42 era, 1-1 vs. MGH) vs. Alexander (5-2, 2.64 era, 1-1 in 3 starts vs. MIC) Doubles by Sax and Moreland get Gas Hornets 1 in the first, but 2 run shot (6) by Durham makes it 3-0. Ripken solo shot (15) in 2nd makes it 3-1 Manhattan. 3rd inning both teams score as Nokes reaches on E6 to cut the lead to 3-2 (Samuel scored from 3rd with 2 outs). Singles by Sax, Yount and Moreland net another Gas Hornets run or 4-2 lead. Gaetti 2 out single in 6th scores Hall from 3rd to make it a 1 run game, 4-3 Manhattan. Gaetti bases loaded DP in 8th ties the game. Two out PH double by Jacoby in bottom half gets Manhattan the lead back, 5-4. Hudson in to pitch the 9th gives up 2 out walk to Webster but ends the rally getting Samuel to ground out. WP Buice (4-2, BS 5), S Hudson (2), LP Williamson (4-3). |
| Game #6: | Deshaies (6-3, 4.18 era, no decision in 2 starts vs MGH) vs. Clancy (5-4, 4.10 era, 1-0 in 2 starts vs. MIC) Dawson ground out after back to back singles by Yount and Sax gets 1 for the Gas Hornets in the 1st. Slaught 2 run shot (6) reverses the 1 run advantage and gives it over to Michigan, 2-1 2nd. Gladden hits a 2 out single in 4th scoring 1 to tie the game, 2-2. Aunt Minnie got the window open, and Durham (7) sailed one right through it in the 5th for a 3 run HR and a 5-2 lead, Deshaies exits for DiPino. Cal opens the 7th with a bomb (7) to cut the lead to 5-3. With down, Nokes PHs for DiPino and singles and then scores from first on Webster double, 5-4. Then Michigan ties it on a wild throw by Reynolds on inning ending grounder by Samuel scoring Webster. Another game into extra innings – bottom 10th 1 out single by Davis and double by Joyner have Manhattan threatening with infield drawn in. Moreland slaps one to the left side, Ripken reaches out and gets it, Davis breaks for home … and he scores, game over, 6-5 Manhattan. WP Buice (5-2), LP Dawley (0-3). |
| Game #7: | Langston (7-5, 2.94 era, 1-1 vs. MGH in 3 starts) vs. Z.Smith (7-1, 2.71 era, 1-0 in 2 starts vs. MIC) 3 singles in the first start the game for Michigan with Maldonado getting an rbi for 1-0 lead. Dawson ties it with 2 out shot to the left field seats (19) in the bottom half. Zane Smith feels no respect in the 4th Felder was given the intentional walk FOR THE 2nd TIME in the game to get to Smith. This time with the bases loaded (2 out of course). This time instead of the whiff, he singles in 2 runs for 3-1 lead. Langston with 9 ks, but 7 walks – 2 in the 7th – gets himself in trouble and gives up 2 out rbi single to Joyner for 4-1 Manhattan lead (and Langston gets an early exit from the game). In the 8th with a runner on, right after Samuel took it to the fence (for an out), Maldonado follows and his shot clears the fenc e (10) to make it 4-3 Gas Hornets. PH single by Durham, Gladden PR, moved up on grounder and scores on Sax single to give Manhattan some breathing room, 5-3. 1 out in 9th, PH Matt Nokes (has been eating the Gas Hornets for lunch) hits a solo long ball (14) cutting it to 5-4. But that was the only damaged allowed by Hudson (2 ks in the 3 outs) as he racks up the save (3). Smith (8-1) gets the win, Langston (7-6) the loss. NOTE – the game did not go into extra innings! |
|
Series Summary * |
REALLY tough and exciting series with Manhattan taking 5 of 7 – but 4 of them went overtime and 2 of the 3 that didn’t were 1 run games. Home town fans were fretting as the Maruaders took the opening 2 games and pitching seemed to dominate all over the place. LOTS of Michigan long balls. Gas Hornets were able to up their division lead to 10 games. |
