PLAYER / PITCHER OF THE WEEK #1

Germantown Grays @ Winnipeg Goldeyes

Series Preview Germantown has a wonderful young hitting team but seemed to lack the starting pitching needed to make the postseason this year. Winnipeg is in the process of rebuilding after years of being a cellar dweller. The Gold Eye attack is Ivan Calderon and Incaviglia both mentioned in trade rumours this off season. The pitching is young and talented but should be in AA not the majors as Glavine, Bosio and Moyer will be taking some lumps.
Game #1: Ivan Calderon homered in his first two atbats of the year for Winnipeg but alas….Germantown came back with 5 runs thanks to a Brower homer and Decinces going 5 for 5 as Guzman got the win and Aguilera the save. Germantown 5 Winnipeg 3
Game #2: Germantown got 14 runs off Winnipeg.. McGwire homered, Cruz hit two homers as Morgan got the easy 14-6 Germantown win.
Game #3: McGwire homered and down in 5 as he hit a grandslam off Moyer, as Manny Lee’s 4 rbis were wasted. Germantown 11 Winnipeg 4
Game #4: McGwire homered Decinces homered for Germantown…Ruess went 6 shutout innings for the 7-2 Germantown win.
Game #5: First round pick Glavine got hammered as the pen was done he gave up 9 runs in 4+ innings. RF Wilson came into the pitch and he was amazing 1 hit a homer in 4.2 innings with no walks and 3 K’s… Oh yeah McGwire hit a homer and drove in 4, and Cotto homered twice… in the Germantown 10-2 win.Boyd got the win Glavine the loss.
Game #6: Ted Power was decent for Winnipeg he still got the loss but atleast he wasn’t hammered. McGwire only went 1 for 5 and didn’t homer. Guzman How ever was awesome 1 run in 8 innings for the 4-1 Germantown win.
Game #7: Veteran Ed Whitson pitched Winnipegs first quality start of the year with 1 run in 7 innings and Havens went the final 2 innings for the save. Calderon homered his 3rd and thankfully McGwire rested. WPG 3 Germantown 1
Series Summary * OMG Germantwon had fun at Winnipegs expense winning 6 of 7. McGwire has to be seen as a player of the week hitting .345 4 homers 13 rbis and 8 runs scored in 6 games. Ray and Decinces both hit over .400 but atleast appeared human unlike this McGwire kid. Calderon had a great series for Winnipeg hitting over .360 with 3 homers but it wasn’t enough.

Steel City Sluggers @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview Steel City comes to Manhattan for the season opening series, each team hopes for big things this year – lots of firepower and mound action should highlight these series and the seasons for these teams (they both spent money in the offseason)
Game #1: The opening game features aces Saberhagen for Steel City and Key for Mahattan – but the bats got the best of in this one – for awhile. Key gives up homers to Baylor and McReynolds and leaves the game after 5 innings down 5-2. Meanwhile Manhattan continually playing catchup get dingers from Joyner and Dawson. And in the 8th they finally tie the game. But it goes on … and on … into the 12th when Jacoby launches a two out walk-off HR to win it for the Gas Hornets 6-5. Buice (1-0) gets the win with 4 innings of near perfect relief, Tekulve (0-1) the loss.
Game #2: Dennis Martinez takes the hill for Steel City and goes 7 strong innings (5 hits – including Joyner’s 2nd HR), but it was enough as the Sluggers just were able to stay ahead of the Gas Hornets eeking out the 3-2 win (another 1 run game). Martinez the win (1-0), Clancy the loss (0-1) Hesketh (1) the save. Carter and Baines each had 2 hits and an rbi each.
Game #3: The is the first game in the series to not be a 1 run affair and that’s because Bobby Meacham, pinchhitting in the 9th whacks a 3 run HR (1) off Jerry “When Your Hot, Your Hot, When your Not Your Not” and I wasn’t Reed. Sax provided most of the Manhattan offense with a triple and single (half their hits. Wilkinson (1-0) gets the win in relief, Righetti (0-1) the loss.
Game #4: Lesser stars Ron Robinson and Zane Smith got the starting nods for game 4 – and well, let’s just say they were IMPRESSIVE! Robinson went 7 innings giving up 5 hits and 1 run (a rare Yount single, a dying quail at that). Smith on the other hand went the whole way giving up 2 hits and 3 walks (got 3 DPs to help, facing only 30 batters) and won with 1-0 CG shutout (1-0). Robinson the loss (0-1).
Game #5: The series finale saw Ken Gross go against Jimmy Key (still trying to get untracked). Well Key did, going 8 innings, 3 hits, 1 run for the win (1-0). But the Gas Hornet offense finally showed up shelling the Sluggers for 12 hits and 9 runs (and 5 walks). Joyner led the way going 4 for 4 and Dawson had 2 doubles, but Jody Davis parlayed a single, double and SF into 5 RBIs! Gross goes to 0-1 with the loss.
Series Summary * Manhattan takes the series 3-2, but it was nothing to gloat over. 4 really tough games that easily could have gone either way.
Dawson .421 with 2 doubles, homer and 4 rbis,
Jody Davis with those 6 ribis (.308), and
Wally Joyner .368, 2 HRs, and 5 runs seemed to be the main offense for Manhattan (along with Steve .333 sax).

Cedar Park Bears @ Fort Worth Panthers

Series Preview The big off season news for the Panthers was that they were moving into a new stadium in 1987. I’ll share three videos related to the Ballpark in Arlington as it was originally named.  Before the recent playoff success for the Rangers this was the greatest moment at the Ballpark. Love Rusty Greer‘s catch.
Game #1: Trailing 2-1 in the 4th inning McGee singles home two to give the Panthers the lead for good. Final score: FWP 5 – CPB 2
Game #2: McGee and McGriff each had 3 hits, but the story of the game was Valenzuela, who pitched a complete 4-hit game striking out 12. Final score: FWP 2 – CPB 1
Game #3: Another good pitched game by both teams. Ft. Worth outhit Cedar Park 5 to 4, but the Bears outscored the Panthers by a run. Final Score: CPB 2 – FWP 1
Series Summary * The last two games were blowouts with each team winning one of the games. Ft. Worth takes the series 3 games to 2.
Kirby Puckett went 8 for 20 (.400) with 3 doubles for Cedar Park while McGee went 8 for 12 (.667) with one double and one homer for the Panthers. Keith Hernandez provide the power for Ft. Worth as he hit 2 home runs during the series.
After opening the season at home Ft. Worth heads out on a 21 game road trip(Montana, Stockton, and Chicago). Cedar Park has their home opening series next week against the Detroit Stars

For the 2nd game in a row Bethel battled back with 3 in the 2nd and a 2 run HR by Mike Young(1) in the 8th. In the 9th Nokes got an RBI single off of Stoddard to give michigan a 6-5 lead. Ripken went 3-4 again and has a line of .625-2-4 after 2 games. Brunansky hit his third HR and is .444-3-6.

Washington Past Timers @ Stockton Wings

Game #1: WAS 9 – STO 2
Bass (2 HRs) and Hall (3 RBI) lead the offensive charge as the Past Timers make quick work of Hurst. Scott has 13 K’s in a complete game victory. canseco has Stockton’s only three hits.
WP: Scott LP: Hurst
HR: Bass (2), Canseco

Pitching duel is decided when Reynolds scores on an E7 in the 8th. Both starters go the distance, with Ryan as the hard-luck loser.
WP: Ojeda (CG) LP: Ryan (CG)
HR: none
Game #3: WAS 5 – STO 4
Sloppy defense (3 errors) costs STO as they lose a tight one when two runs score on a PB and then an E1 in the 6th and the winning run scores on an E7 in the 10th. Canseco’s game-tying 3-run HR in the 6th goes for naught.
WP: Bannister LP: Eichhorn SV: D. Smith
HR: Iorg, Canseco
Game #4: STO 3 – WAS 1
Single runs in the 5th, 6th, and 7th nail down this tight battle. Evans breaks up the shutout in the 9th with a bases-loaded walk. Rookie Dunne is impressive in his debut.
WP: Dunne LP: Reuschel SV: Eichhorn
HR: none
Game #5: WAS 13 – STO 4
A 10-run 3rd inning does in Stockton as Murphy leads the Washington offensive parade with two 3-run HRs and 7 RBI total. Stieb cruises.
WP: Stieb LP: Sanderson
HR: Murphy (2), Larkin
Game #6: STO 4 – WAS 3
Stockton battles late to beat another strong outing by Scott. Hatcher and Knight come up big with 2 RBI apiece. Hurst and Niedenfuer barely manage to keep Washington at bay, with Niedenfuer snuffing out a bases-loaded rally to close it out.

Team vs. Team *

Chicago Demolition @ Montana Cutthroats

Series Preview (Note: We played this series last Monday, but I have failed to do the write up due to some sickness and work issues. Sorry for the delay.) The Season Opening Series between the “Hall of Fame Veteran” and the “new Guy on the block”. The Chicago Demolition visit Montana to take on the Cutthroats in Montana’s inaugural MWWL series. This will be the first games since John “Stray” Corrado was voted into the MWWL Hall of Fame. As usual Stray’s Demolition are poised to compete for the league championship this season. The same can not be said for Matt Ellis’ Cutthroats who are definitely on a rebuilding path.
Game #1: The Cutthroats jumped out to an early 4-2 lead, but the Demolition roared back with 2 in the 5th to tie and 3 in the 7th to win 7-4 in the season opener. Montana’s Ellis Burks‘ 3-run HR in the 1st gave the Cutthroats some early season hope. However, Demolition 1B Kent Hrbek brought them back to reality with a two HR, 4 RBI performance. Roger Clemens got the win for Chicago despite a less than dominant performance. The Demolition pen was fantastic with 3 innings and only 1 hit allowed. Final Score: CHI 7 – MCT 4
Game #2: The Montana Cutthroats jumped on Chicago starter Dave Stewart and never looked back in a 15-3 shocker. The Cutthroats hit four HRs in the game including two from DH Jim Presley. Presley drove home 5 and scored 3 times. Greg Mathews was solid on the hill over 7 innings to get the win. Chicago’s Ozzie Virgil went yard twice in a losing effort. On the bad side for Montana, Ellis Burks and Willie Randolph both were injured for the rest of the series. Final Score: MCT 15 – CHI 3
Game #3: The Montana Cutthroats scored twice in the 8th and once in the 9th to overcome Chicago’s 9-6 lead and send the game to extra innings. The two teams battled on until the 13th when Chicago’s powerful lineup broke the game open with a four spot to win going away 13-9. Mike Scioscia got 3 hits for the winners and Hrbek hit his 3rd homerun of the season. For Montana, Darryl Strawberry, Jim Presley, and Carmelo Castillo each got three hits. Montana outhit Chicago 16-12 but couldn’t cash on some extra inning opportunities including the winning run on third with no out. Final Score: CHI 13 – MCT 9
Game #4: After plenty of offense in the series’ first three games, the two teams settled in for a traditional pitchers dual. Chicago came out on top as Doug Drabek and Dennis Eckersley combined to 4-hit the Cutthroats and win 3-1. Chicago scored single runs in each of the first three innings led by Eric Davis‘ solo HR. Darryl Strawberry got 3 of Montana’s 4 hits for the game in the losing effort. Final Score: CHI 3 – MCT 1
Game #5: Kent Hrbek continued his hot start with his 4th HR of the season to lead Chicago to a 5-3 win over Montana. Once again, the Cutthroats scored early and took the lead on Ron Kittle‘s 1st inning 3-run HR. However, led by Hrbek, Bill Doran‘s 3 hits, and Ozzie Guillen‘s 2 hits, Chicago overcame the slow start to win their 4th in 5 games. Demolition ace Roger Clemens was much better in his 2nd outing and got his second win of the year. Dennis Eckersley recorded his 3 save already. Final Score: CHI 5 – MCT 3
Game #6: Chicago overcame a pesky Montana team for their 5th win in 6 tries with a 4-3 win in 10 innings. Montana tied the game in the 9th with 2 runs only to see Chicago score in the 10th to win. Dave Stewart was great on the hill for Chicago with 7 strong innings allowing only 1 run. Greg Gross was 2 for 4 with a HR and 3 RBI for the Demolition at the plate. Darryl Strawberry homered for Montana who are now 1-5 despite being in every game late. Final Score: CHI 4 – MCT 3
Game #7: The Montana Cutthroats got a second solid start from Greg Mathews who went 7 2/3 innings allowing only 1 run for his second win of the young season. The Cutthroats managed enough offense to back Mathews on the mound for a 4-1 win. Willie Wilson hit his 2nd HR of the year (yes…Willie Wilson) and Steve Balboni got his 1st to lead the Montana attack. Herm Winningham got two hits for Chicago who failed to hit a homerun in a game for the first time this season. Final Score: MCT 4 – CHI 1
Series Summary * Chicago takes the series 5 games to 2 over Montana. The series was actually closer than the win-loss results would reveal. Montana outscored Chicago 39-36 despite only winning two games. However, Chicago proved to be the better team as they won the close games behind a solid pitching staff and clutch hitting. For Chicago, Kent Hrbek hit four HRs in the series and led both teams with 10 RBI. Montana’s Darryl Strawberry had a mammoth series. He hit .591 with an OBP of .710! He also scored 11 times. Matt Ellis may need to find him some support!
