The 1992 Mid-West Winter League All-Star Game was held on Saturday, November 6th, 1992 in the home of the Winnipeg Gold Eyes.

The annual All-Star Classic returns to the National League confines where the American League looks to be out to return the favor for the beatdown received in 1991. The starter for the home team was Curt Schilling who on the season carried an 18-9 record with a 2.00 ERA over 238.1 innings and the American League sent out Bob Tewksbury and his 25-3 record, 1.88 ERA and 243.2 innings of work. Both men were winners of the Cy Young on the season.

Life on the mound started out rough for Schilling as Lou Whitaker reached due to a bad throw by Curt. Barry Larkin followed it up with an infield single up the middle to put the first two on. A third batter reaches when Larry Walker gets a single, but Whitaker was held at 3rd. The American League clearly had their eyes set on a big inning with the bases loaded and no one out. But then, Schilling showed why he won the Cy Young by striking out Gary Sheffield and Joe Carter back-to-back. Now with two outs, John Kruk gives it a shot but only manages a lazy fly ball to Andy Van Slyke. What a performance by Schilling. The crowd is ON FIRE now. Continue reading →

The 1991 Mid-West Winter League All-Star Game was held on Sunday, November 3rd, 1991 in the home of the Stockton Wings.

The 1991 All-Star game was scheduled to start at 7:15 PM on the East Coast.  Mother nature had a different timetable in mind.  Both starting pitchers were getting loose in the pen.  Nolan Ryan, winner of 23 games on the season for the A.L., and Mark Langston, who went 24 -9 with a 2.17 ERA in an incredible 41 starts, for the NL.   Then as predicted in the 1982 hit by Toto, “I bless the rains down in Africa”, and bless them it did.  A torrential storm came crashing down. The 1988 Mid-West Winter League All-Star Game was held on Sunday November 6th, 1988 in Manhattan at the home of the Gas Hornets.

30 Players from the American League & 30 players from the National League squared off in the 19th MWWL All-Star Game.  The American League has a 15 to 3 lead in the All-Star Games, would 1988 fair different?

The 1987 Mid-West Winter League All-Star Game was played in sunny Stockton California on November 15th, 1987.   The American League starter was from the Chicago Demolition – “Rocket” Roger Clemens (28-5  3.04) matched up against former Chicago teammate and now Long Beach Titan Frank Viola (20-8  1.81).   Both managers from the 1987 World Series teams – John “Stray” Corrado from the American League Champion Chicago Demolition vs. Bill Schindel representing the National League’s Manhattan Gas Hornets.

The game was off to a quick 1-0 lead for the National League as Don Mattingly quickly homered in the top of the 1st inning off Clemens.
