Castle Rock Hounds @ Southlake Scorpions |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | The Hounds are 10-2 at home and they are facing off against a Scorpions team that has not left their friendly confines for a road game yet. Castle Rock is looking to keep its bats hot as they welcome Southlake into town for six. |
| Game #1: | Thurman vs. Burkett (need those innings) in Game 1. Southlake jumps out to an early 2-0 lead. It is quiet until the 6th, when the Scorpions pick up two more to make it 4-0. Meanwhile, Castle Rock can’t figure out Thurman, as they get 5 walks, but only two hits as he goes 8 IP without allowing a run. Shuey comes out to finish it and the final is 4-0, Southlake.
WP: Thurman (3-1) |
| Game #2: | Hermanson vs. Parque in Game 2. Scorpions plate 1 in the first, but Tatis brings Castle Rock back with a two-run homer in the bottom half. Castle Rock adds another in the second after a Polanco triple, but Scorpion ties it up 3-3 with a Bagwell homer. Looks like we may be in for a slugfest today. Hounds pick up two in the 3rd to make it 5-3, but Russ Davis pops a solo HR to make it 5-4. Royce Clayton delivers an RBI single to make it 6-4 as Parque is finally pulled from the mound in the bottom of the 5th. Hermanson calms the Southlake bats and gets through 7 IP. Ben Petrick adds a solo HR for Castle Rock to extend their lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the 7th. And, that is is how it finishes as the Hounds bullpen gets the job done.
WP: Hermanson (4-0) |
| Game #3: | Dreifort and Cone in Game 3. Southlake strikes first again, in a major way, as Russ Davis hits a 3-run homer in the top of the 1st to take a 4-0 lead (all with two outs). That may be enough for Cone, the 14. Dreifort settles himself nicely, going 8 innings and only allowing those first inning runs. But, Cone is better. He goes the full nine innings, give up just two hits and no runs.
WP: Cone (2-3) |
| Game #4: | Scott Elarton gets a spot start vs. Andy Ashby in Game 4. Bonds stakes the Hounds to a 2-0 lead with a first-inning homer. Southlake gets one back on an unearned run in the 3rd and Bichette gives the Scorpions the 3-2 lead with a 2-run homer in the 4th. Castle Rock cedes another unearned run as well to give Southlake the 5-2 lead. Tatis delivers a solo shot to make it 5-3. A sloppy game all around as Castle Rock gets within one run on a Weiss error.
Bagwell delivers a clutch two-out two-run HR in the top of the 7th to extend the Southlake lead to 7-4. Kevin Young piles on with a solo shot of his own. Rivera comes on for Southlake, but proceeds to give up back-to-back singles to make it 8-6 after 8. Mariano comes back out for the 9th and Matt Luke leads off the inning with a solo shot to make it 8-7. Rocker comes in and gets the next three batters to close it out. Final is 8-7, Southlake as they take a commanding 3-1 series lead. WP: Ashby (3-1) |
| Game #5: | Chris Carpenter and Ismael Valdez in this one. Bichette opens the scoring with a solo HR in the 2nd for Southlake. Easley ties it up with a homer of his own in the 3rd and Luis Gonzalez scores Bonds with a two-out triple to take the 2-1 lead. O’Leary delivers an RBI single for Southlake to make it 2-2. Cairo delivers an RBI infield hit to make it 3-2, Southlake in the 5th. Dan Wilson adds another two-out RBI with a double to make it 4-2. Southlake has been delivering the clutch hits.
Southlake delivers three more runs, punctuated by a Kevin Young two-run homer to make it 7-2. And, that’s how it ends, 7-2 Southlake as they take the 4-1 series lead. WP: Valdez (3-2) |
| Game #6: | Kenny Rogers tries to save face for Castle Rock as he faces Thurman, who controlled the Hounds quite well in Game 1. For the second time in three games, Bonds hits a two-run homer in the first to give Castle Rock a 2-0 lead. Sweeney adds another to make it 4-0, as they seem to have the book on Thurman this time around. In the bottom of the second, Castle Rock loads the bases with nobody out and Bonds up. But Bonds grounds into a 1-2-3 double play and Gonzalez flies out to squelch the rally.
Easley hits the third Hounds homer of the game to extend the lead to 5-0 in the 4th. Thurman is pulled after just 3.2 IP. Meanwhile, Kenny Rogers is cruising, giving up no runs through 7 IP. Dye hits the fourth Hounds homer of the day in the 7th to extend the lead to 7-0. Castle Rock tacks on another in the 8th to make it 8-0. Rogers goes the distance in the 8-0, Castle Rock victory. WP: Rogers (3-1) |
| Series Summary: | Castle Rock was feeling pretty good coming in, but Southlake takes the series, 4-2. Scorpions had the clutch hits and the superior bullpen. |
Hollywood Vampires @ Hampton Huskies
|
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Off to a lousy start, the Hampton Huskies drag their battered bones home to host the Vampires of Hollywood for six games as they try and figure out whether they will be buyers or sellers this year in the MWWL. |
| Game #1: | Hard to field a frigging team when injuries have reduced normal platoon players into worn out bags of crap, but thankfully Grade 4 starter Carl Pavano pitched more like a 14 (or more likely the Vampires were too busy laughing at us to hit) and the Huskies wound up taking the opener 3-2. Bill Spiers had three innocuous singles that didn’t factor much into the scoring but SJ Surhoff homered and drove in the winning run on a ground out. Marlon Anderson singled and stole two bases for Hollywood. W-Pavano (1-0) Sv-Graves (2) L-Halama (1-1) Hr-HAM: Surhoff (2) |
| Game #2: | Roy Halladay never even broke a sweat as the Huskies could only manage three hits in an easy 5-0 Hollywood win. Halladay was not overpowering – only two Ks and four walks – but never allowed anyone to reach 2nd base in the eight innings he pitched. FP Santangelo upped his average to a crazy .366 with three hits in three at bats. He also scored a run and drove in one. W-Halladay (4-1) L-Arrojo (0-4) HR-none |
| Game #3: | The Huskies may have won the headhunting battle but they lost the game as Ruben Rivera drove in two runs and stole two bases to lead the Vampires to a 5-2 win. Hampton starter Joe Nathan plunked John Valentin and Orlando Palmeiro (to start the game) and hurt both of them – Valentin for 5 days and Palmeiro for 22, but it was not until he smacked Mike Stanley lin the 6th inning that he finally got tossed. Hollywood starter Vlad Nunez was also tossed for hitting (but not injuring Jeromy Burnitz who was just back from an injury). W-Lowe (1-0) Sv-Foulke (4) L-Nathan (1-2) HR-none |
| Game #4: | Kent Bottenfield pitched well for Hampton, but Jeff Brantley did not as the latter almost blew a 4-run lead late in the game and only a perfect 9th inning from Danny Graves saved the day as Hampton evened the series with a narrow 6-5 win. Mike Stanley and Deivi Cruz each had two hits for Hollywood while Jeremy Giambi drove on a pair. Jeromy Burnitz led the Huskies with three RBIs on a two-run homer and a bases loaded walk that brought in a run. W-Bottenfield (3-1) Sv-Graves (3) L-Perez (1-2) HR-HAM: Burnitz (5), Rodriguez (5) |
| Game #5: | Fat Freddy Garcia allowed just five hits in eight strong innings as the Vampires edged Hampton 2-1. Just as Hampton was about to get its lineup basically back intact, Bill Mueller had a hard grounder hit him in the kneecap and hobbled him for 5 days. sigh. Cliff Floyd had two hits for the Vampires who were still looking for their first homer of the series. Garcia fanned six and walked just two in the contest while Keith Foulke continued to rack up the saves against Hampton with a near perfect 9th – he allowed a walk. W-Garcia (3-2) Sv-Foulke (5) L-Guzman (1-2) Hr-HAM: Vaughn (6) |
| Game #6: | Danny Graves literally threw the game away for Hampton in the 11th inning when with FP Santangelo on 3rd base he sent a ball high over catcher Mike Redmond‘s head and to the backstop allowing what would prove to be the winning run for Hollywood 3-2. Deivi Cruz had both Hollywood RBIs with a double off starter Carl Pavano in the 2nd inning. Keith Fpulke saved his 4th game of the series. W-Lowe (2-0) Sv-Foulke (6) L-Graves ( |
| Series Summary: | Ugh. Hollywood takes four of six. |

Joe Randa led the way, with 5 hits, Warren Morris hit his 5th homerun and knocked in 5. Rico Brogna hit 2 homeruns (#s 3 & 4) part of a 16 hit Baltimore day, but the Crabs came up WAY short!
BOMBERS 18 /28/ 0 |

BOMBERS 4 /8/ 0 |
| Game #6: | Manny Ramirez hits his 3rd homerun of the series, and 9th of the season, as Valdosta builds a 5-2 lead. But 4 Blue Crab longballs (Chipper Jones #11, Sean Casey #4, Tony Batista #5, and Chris Widger #2) propel Baltimore to its second straight victory.
BOMBERS 7 /12/ 1 |
| Series Summary: | Lots of hits in this one! In 6 games, Baltimore had 73 hits, but Valdosta had 88! Crabs bounce back from the 28-hit shellacking in game 4, to win a pair of one run victories to close out the series and earn the split. |
