PREVIEW –   Two Division rivals from the American League East square off in a 7-game series. Corktown won 119 games & by far were the better managed team during the 1998 season. Chris DeMecurio should easily win the Manager of the Year. Flossmoor on the other hand went into a dismal display of insecurity & flowedered with management early in the season, but somehow managed to win 86 games & grab the second Wild Card Spot in the American League. New ownership was found & the plan is to move them to the city of Montreal after the 1998 season. However, they first square off in this American League Division Series. |

  PREVIEW – Michigan (WC team 93-69) vs. Manhattan (1st NL East, 107-55). These teams met 12 times during the regular season and split the series 6-6. So expectations are high for both teams. The Gas Hornets get the home field nod and they hope to exploit that while the Mauraders don’t care where they play as they held a 47-34 road record! How do they compare?
Pitching: Manhattan holds the edge here (3.57 era, 2nd in NL) to Michigan’s 4.24 and 6th in the league. They each gave up almost the same number of homers (165-MGH, 167-MIC). Michigan gave up more walks, but fanned more batters. Neither team had a 20 game winner, but Tim Wakefield came close with a 19-4 record and 5 Gas Hornets starters had 10 or more wins. Mark Gardner led the Mauraders staff with a 15-3 record (2.93 era) so there’s your ace. Kerry Lightenberg saved 37 games for Michigan while John Wetteland save 21 for Manhattan. Both teams tallied 41 saves. Batting: Gas Hornets again lead here with .285/.357/.445 line (2nd in NL) to .265/.341/.455 line (4th in NL). And in runs scored it was 939 (3rd in NL) to 888 (4th) giving Manhattan an edge their as well. But the Maurauders relied more on the long ball with a homer edge of 237 to 184. Gas Hornets were more a small ball team that like to run (138 SBs – 2nd in NL) to 57 SBs for Michigan. Finesse vs. Power! Fielding both teams had a .983 fielding percentage with Manhattan have a slightly higher defensive efficiency record (.730 to .690). Numbers aside, it should be a tough, close series! |

 PREVIEW –  Two very good teams who are nothing more than pretenders in the American League face off in the 2nd Division Series. Corktown is the top dog in the American League, & whichever team (CHI or FWP) wins this series more than likely will lose to the Bootleggers in the American League Championship Series.
