1999 A.L. DIVISION SERIES #1

Castle Rock Hounds @ Fort Worth Panthers
PREVIEW – Two teams from the wild wild AL West in round 2 of the 1999 playoffs. The Panthers led the league in hitting at .311 and Castle Rock was third at .283. Ft. Worth led in OBP while the Hounds were tied for 2nd. Castle Rock led in slugging at .499 while the Panthers were 2nd at .490. These two teams were the highest scoring teams in the AL. Ft. Worth at 6.7 R/G and Castle Rock at 6.4. The Panthers had 4 players in the top 6 in batting average. Ivan Rodriguez .353, Fred McGriff .348, Edgar Martinez.337, and Doug Glanville .337. They also had two players with more than 350 AB’S who hit at least .330. This series could see some offensive fireworks!

PREVIEW – The Blarney Drive Bandits outclassed four time Champion Winnipeg(91,92,96,97) during the season winning the division and 108 games, while Winnipeg was ten games back with 98 wins. Team statistics give the Bandits the edge the second highest average in MWWL, and third in runs per game at 6.4, Pitching 4th at 4.08 but 16th in team fielding. Winnipeg was just behind in hitting with 6.3 runs per game ahead in homers, way behind in pitching at 4.83 era but third best fielding. Its seemed highly unlikely for a Winnipeg series win as Blarney Drive Bandits had a rotation of Randy Johnson 18xyz, Hampton 17 and Yoshi 12. While Winnipeg only had Schilling 15xyz, Anderson 7Z and Reynoso 8. Plus the pen wasn’t even close as the Bandits had 13* that would be star on Winnipeg who don’t play an important role. Vegas said Blarney in 5! Patrick and I played over zoom.

PREVIEW – The Lincoln Tunnel series between the Newark Bears and the Manhattan Gas Hornets. All signs point to a great series, the Bears took the season series 7-5 but Manhattan holds the edge in batting (.292 to .276, 1052 runs to 893) and pitching (4.22 era to 4.58) but the Bears hold a 40 homer advantage 223 to 183. Gas Hornets are all healthy and now have full access to the bullpen help they added as well as the rotation, so who knows what effect that may have. But they hold the home field advantage and the opening 2 games will be in the Big Apple

PREVIEW – This is a rematch of the 1998 ALDS where Corktown won and eventually went on to win the 1998 World Series. On paper these teams are very evenlly matches. Chicago has the pitching, while Corktown has the lumber. They are so even they had the exact same record during the season, and had to use the 5th tiebreaker just to determined home field advantage! Which went to Corktown, so that’s where we begin.
