Series Summary:  Sluggers drop 4 of 5 to Missouri.
Long Beach Titans @ Hampton Huskies
Series Preview:  The powerful Long Beach Titans travel way east and north to square off against the near powerless Huskies in Hampton for five games.
Game #1:  Melido Perez was scheduled for an eye exam after the game after the righty hurler couldn’t find the plate at all, walking seven in four innings as Hampton coasted to an 8-2 win.
The Huskies, of course, failed to get the ball out of the park but Carlos Baerga of the Titans did not as he accounted for all Long Beach’s runs with a mammoth shot to right as the only damage the visitors could do today to Orel Hershiser.
Hershiser’s rare start was a beauty as Hampton kicked into scramble mode to get him some innings and avoid losing him to free agency. Hershiser scattered seven hits through eight innings with three walks and five Ks.
Jeff Frye continued to swing a hot bat for Hampton in a platoon role going 3/5 with a double, run and RBI as he lifted his average to .372. Jeromy Burnitz drove in three runs with a bases loaded double in the 6th off Long Beach reliever Danny Darwin.
HAMPTON 8 – LONG BEACH 2
Win-Hershiser (3-0)
Loss-M.Perez (3-8)
HR-LBT: Baerga (13)
Game #2:  The Titans turned a close game into a complete ass-whipping, scoring 10 runs in the 8th inning as they crushed Hampton 16-1.
Ouch.
Bobby Jones kept Hampton close in this one and left the game with a couple of men on in the 8th and the score only 3-1. Enter Chan Ho Park and good-bye ball game. In Park’s 2/3 of an inning, the Titans ravaged him for 8 runs on four walks and four hits including a 3-run shot by slap-hitting Manuel Lee. Park’s successor, Mike Remlinger, fared not much better as he gave up a 3-run shot to Glenallen Hill in what amounted to a mercy killing.
Hampton’s faithful knew this one was not to be as in the game the Titans smacked three fly balls down the left or right field line with Hill’s and Lee’s homers just staying fair and Cecil Fielder‘s line drive off Jones hitting the left field foul pole. Meanwhile, Hampton had four balls hit down lines with ALL of them going foul, of course, incuding two in the same at bat for Mike Stanley who ended up fouling out.
Nelson Liriano has two doubles, scored twice and drove in three as the Titans got a hit in each slot in the batting order. Hill led the carnage with four RBIs with three by homer and one on a bases loaded walk.
Joey Hamilton was unnecessarily nearly unhittable for Long beach allowing just the single run on four hits and a walk over seven innings.
LONG BEACH 16 – HAMPTON 1
Win-Hamilton (7-2)
Loss-B.Jones (5-6)
HR-LBT: Hill (9), Baerga (14), Fielder (19), Lee (3)
Game #3:  Long Beach continued to disrespect Hampton pitching – this time treating ace Doug Drabek like a pair of old sweat socks – homering three times off him in an easy 6-2 win.
Hampton made the game deceptively close with a couple of runs in the 8th on an RBI triple by Henry Rodriguez and a ground out by Jeff Frye, but could manage nothing against starter David West who tossed six shutout innings allowing only four hits and two walks. He fanned four.
Making it look easy once again, the usual suspects – Hill, Baerga, and Fielder – continued to smack the ball and smack it good. Hill led the squad with two hits including the 3-run blast in the 3rd inning to the opposite field.
Editorial note: Baerga’s homer was just inside the right field foul pole … Devon White and Mickey Tettleton lofted balls down the same line that went just foul … of course. For those keeping track at home, Hampton’s freakishly powerless hitting now had them down 8-0 in the homer department in the series.
LONG BEACH 6 – HAMPTON 2
Win-West (6-4)
Loss-Drabek (8-4)
HR-LBT: Hill (10), Fielder (20), Baerga (15)
Game #4:  A wild, wild game with a huge night for a huge man as Cecil Fielder had a night to remember …
Long Beach erupted for three runs in the 1st inning with the first of two homers by Fielder – a no-doubter against Jason Bere to dead centre field with Carlos Baerga and Nelson Liriano aboard.
Hampton came screaming back with 10 runs in the 2nd inning – nine of them off Long Beach starter Vicente Palacios (1.1 IP, five hits, 9 R, 8 ER, 3 BB, 1 K) – including … GASP!!! … a three-run homer by Henry Rodriguez and a grand slam by Chris Gomez.
Long Beach refused to go gently into that good night, however, chipping away with a run in the 3rd on an RBI single by Juan Samuel and another in the 4th on a sacrifice fly by David Justice to make it 10-5 after 5.
Bere and company had a bit of a problem with control in the game (walking eight against just two strikeouts by the end of it) with walks to eagle-eyed Nelson Liriano (who wound up walking five times on the day) and Justice which set the stage for Fielder’s fireworks – a grand slam into the upper deck in left to make it 10-9 for Hampton. Some nice pitching by Chan Ho Park for the second time in the series as he saw his ERA swell to 54.00 thanks to getting just one out while allowing four runs to come in on a couple of walks and hits.
Hampton gave themselves some breathing room with a run in the bottom of the 6th on a single by Brian McRae, but that joy was short-lived as Long Beach tied it up 11-11 with a couple of runs on RBI singles by Fielder and Samuel in the 7th. That gave Fielder four hits on the day and 8 RBIS. Nice.
If nothing else, Long beach proved you can’t throw crappy pitching at them EVER and get away with it no matter how big a lead you have.
The teams braced to head into extra innings but a defensive collapse by the Titans in the bottom of the 8th saw Baerga and shortstop Pat Meares commit throwing errors that led to four runs being scored off Jose Mesa with only one being earned as Hampton finally pulled it out 15-11.
HAMPTON 15 – LONG BEACH 11
Win-McDowell (6-5)
Loss-Mesa (3-2)
HR-LBT: Fielder 2 (22); HAM: Martin (6), H.Rodriguez (4), Gomez (1)
Game #5:  Too tired to lift their arms after the clobbering of pitchers in Game 4, the series ended with Tom Gordon turning in a solid eight innings and holding the Titans to only four hits as they fell 3-1 to the Huskies.
No homers again for Hampton, but of course Carlos Baerga had one for Long beach as he tried to outdo Cecil Fielder for player of the week honors. Fielder only managed a double in four at bats.
Dennis Martinez gave up three runs – two earned – on six hits over six innings to get the L for Long Beach.
HAMPTON 3 – LONG BEACH 1
Win-Gordon (5-6)
Save-D.Jones (13)
Loss-D.Martinez (6-5)
HR-LBT: Baerga (16)
Series Summary:  Some great individual performances by Cecil Fielder and Carlos Baerga, but even so the Titans fall short as Hampton steals 3 of 5 as they continue to trudge along in 2nd place in the NL East.

Series Summary:  California scores another sweep at home, this time against the visiting Corktown Bootleggers.

Grays James smacked a 2-run PH homer in the 6th, 3-3. Game reset. Goldeyes come right back in their next at bat. Manwaring leadoff with a double and Barbarie singled. Alomar leadoff the 8th with a dinger, Grays 3-2, still in the 8th Glavine walked Thomas and James goes deep, 5-2, followed by a Caminiti blast to right.

Germantown 6 7 0 WP Castillo; 2b Sanders; 3b James; HR Alomar, James Caminiti.

Goldeyes close the gap in the 7th as Mack commits a 2-out error, 4-2.

Winnepeg 2 8 0 LP Schilling.

HRs Walton 2 (1 and 2) both solo. Seitzer 2 (2 and 3) and 4 rbis. That’s more than they needed. Mike Williams goes 8, gives up 3 hits for the win (2-1).
Game #2:  Mike Greenwell gets the 2 homer game this time (11 and 12) – both solo and his team scores 5 more and it’s a good thing for the Bandits that Greenwell hit his two as the final was 7-5 Blarney Drive. Turner Ward goes deep for Manhattan.
Belcher (2-12) gets the win in 6 – but didn’t do too well.
Game #3:  Gas Hornets show up for game 3 and put up a 10 spot in the 1st. First 9 batters – 5 hits, 2 walks, HBP and yes, 1 out. Brian Anderson (6-4) didn’t need a lot of help going 7 innings, 6 hits, 1 run in a game Manhattan wins 11-2. Ricky Henderson (2) and Scarsone (2) homer for the Bandits 2 runs.
Game #4:  Well if Manhattan can get 10 in one innings, the Bandits decide they can at least do it in one game – and the 5 run 9th punctuated it. Ryan Klesko (6) and Eddie Murray (10) homer in the 19 hit attack – Kevin Seitzer had 4. Final 10-0 Blarney Drive. Of course Randy Johnson (6-7) was on the hill and gives up 4 hits, fans 8, no runs in 8 innings.
