A Lopez solo in the 8th and a Hunter solo in the 9th made it close, but Crudale got Lopez to fly out with the tying run on third in the 9th. Baltimore 4-3 |
| Game #5: | Hudson picked up a dominating complete game victory powered by two homeruns from Dmitri Young. Baltimore 7-2 |
| Game #6: | Baltimore got their first run and hit off Schilling in the 3rd. Padilla wasn’t as dominating but he kept the Mullets at bay until the 7th. Southlake Stealers @ Chicago Demolition |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | In a battle for control of the American League Central, the first place Chicago Demolition host the second place Southlake Stealers for a 6-game set. Chicago currently holds a strong 5 game lead atop the standings. If you like high powered offense and lots of runs on the board, you are in the wrong place this week. This week you will see multiple pitchers with legitimate claims to the Cy Young Award so far this season. These two staffs are 1 and 2 in nearly every pitching category this year, including lowest ERA, lowest runs allowed, most strikeouts, and lowest opponents batting average. Both are truly elite; but how they go about it is quite different. The Demolition lean on their starting staff of Martinez, Clemens, Schmidt, Millwood and Seo to go deep into games and then close out the game with hard throwing Billy Wagner. They lead the league with an incredible 45 Quality Starts. Whereas, the Stealers have created a philosophy of Pitching Chaos. It is not uncommon for them to throw 6, 7, or 8 different arms on the mound in a game. They have 5 of the top ten relievers in terms of Holds and lowest Opponent Batting Average. They will throw a bevy of arms at you and then turn to their closer John Smoltz to lock the game down. One area where Southlake struggles is with walks and long balls. If Chicago can show patience at the plate to draw a few walks and then capitalize on a pitch hanging in the zone they can score. With these two staffs it will be difficult for a great offense to generate runs, and neither Chicago nor Southlake is anywhere near that standard. Both teams are nearly identical and mired in the middle of the American League in most offensive categories. Southlake tends to hit a bit better, but Chicago has more pop in their lineup. One area that Chicago excels at is drawing walks, something that Southlake pitchers have a habit of doing. If Chicago can capitalize on that is still to be determined. Chicago leans on Stewart and Renteria getting on base with Delgado and Batista bringing them home. Stewart is currently 4th in Average and 7th in runs scored. Batista and Delgado are 5th and 6th in runs batted in respectively. For Southlake the phenom from the far east, Ichiro currently is 5th in batting average and 4th in runs scored. A major component of the Stealers offense is taking extra bases and stealing bases. Chicago has Johnson behind the dish. He is throwing out 39% of baserunners who dare try to swipe second. He will be vital to keeping Southlake scoring down. Statistically, these teams are nearly identical, both offensively and defensively. During their first meeting of the season, in Southlake the Stealers took the series 3 games to 2. Southlake has only lost 8 games total at home and 25% of them are at the hands of the Demolition, showing just how evenly matched these two teams are. The areas that Southlake struggles at happen to be the areas that Chicago excels and Vegas has factored that in the series odds favoring the Demolition extending their lead by another 2 games once this week concludes. I hope you bought your tickets to these games early in the season because all 6 games are sellouts. Not even standing room is available. Let’s play ball! |
| Game #1: | In a surprise decision the Demolition will give the ball in this series opener to Dough Waechter and his 16.20 ERA. The Stealers counter with Wilson Alvarez who just completed a rehab assignment down in the minors. The offensive stars for each team shined early. Garciaparra hit a two-run bomb in the first for Southlake. Chicago answered with a Renteria double and a Delgado base hit to make the score 2-1 at the end of the first. Both teams threatened to score over the next three innings but each starter was able to contain and keep the other team from scoring. Until Beltran took one deep in the fifth for just his 4th homer of the season. It now stands at 3-1 Southlake through five innings. Leskanic pitched the 6th and started the 7th, but after a single by Higginson and a walk to Rentaria, the Stealers called on Hasegawa to dampen the threat and finish that inning. Delgado would lead off the 8th inning with a double, followed by a Tim Salmon walk. Smoltz said enough of that, and he immediately came into the game and extinguished the flames. Chicago couldn’t afford to let Southlake extend the lead, so they went to Wagner. Unfortunately, that move backfired as Rondell White hit a solo shot in the 9th to extend the Stealers lead. That was as much offense as Smoltz would need as he had a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th to complete the six out save.Final: Southlake 4-1WP: Alvarez (5-2) LP: Waechter (0-2) S: Smoltz (13) |
| Game #2: | Chicago cannot afford to drop two in a row. When you absolutely need a win you call upon Cy Young candidate Pedro Martinez. Southlake is able to tag Pedro in the second thanks to a two out walk to Encarnacion and a double by Garciaparra. It looked as if Chicago would mirror that in the bottom half of the inning. A lead off walk to Johnson, followed by a Matsui double. However, Johnson doesn’t have the same wheels as Encarnacion and held up at third base. With two on and no outs, Tejera buckled down and left the boys stranded on the bases. It was 1-0 Stealers at the end of two. Pedro continued to have control issues. He walked Anderson in the third and Beltran doubled to right to score him. That lead was short lived as a lead off single sent Southlake to their bullpen. The strength of this team failed to deliver. A walk put two guys on and Delgado did Carlos like things and gave Chicago a 3-2 lead by putting one over the fence off Koplove. Tim Salmon followed that up with a banger of his own. Charles Johnson then walked and that would be the end of Koplove’s day. He faced five batters walking two and giving up two bombs. Mahay would close out the inning, but the damage was done and it was 4-2 Chicago after three innings. Southlake would leave Mahay in a bit too long and Johnson hit a two run shot in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-2 Demolition. Each team would score a few meaningless runs to close out the game, making the final score 7-4. Pedro wasn’t his dominant self but was good enough to get the job done. Meanwhile, Chicago laughed at the so-called Chaos Pitching of Southlake as they greeted the bullpen to the tune of 6 runs, on 8 hits and three walks, including 3 homers.Final: Chicago 7-4WP: Martinez (9-2) LP: Koplove (2-1) S: Wagner (14) |
| Game #3: | Game three features two middle of the pack pitchers Seo vs Villone.
Southlake moved Ichiro down in the lineup in an attempt to restart his bat. The move paid off early as Suzuki hit a two run shot in the second inning to give the Stealers an early lead. He would then double in the 4th scoring White to extend the lead. Final: Southlake 9-4 WP: Villone (3-4) |
| Game #4: | Even the home crowd is excited to see the Sophomore Phenom Mark Prior to take mound for Southlake. He brings a record of 10-2 with an ERA of 1.78 and a league leading 111 strikeouts. Chicago will start Kevin Millwood with hopes of giving the Demolition a shot to even up the series. Southlake scores first on a Sac Fly by Encarnacion in the first inning. Juan then keeps Chicago off the board in the second when he nails Johnson at the plate for the final out of the frame. Southlake extends the lead when Beltran scores his second run of the game. This time courtesy of a Sac Fly from Nomar. Chicago threatens by loading the bases in the sixth inning with just one out. But Prior composed himself and escapes keeping Chicago scoreless through six. Millwood would do everything he could to give Chicago a chance. He would go 7 1/3 innings giving up just the two runs, before giving way to Wagner. But those two runs were two too many. Mark Prior goes the distance for this 4th shutout of the season. Chicago would get 5 hits off him, but no runs as he added 11 more strikeouts to his league leading total.Final Score: Southlake 2-0WP: Prior (11-2) LP: Millwood (4-6) |
| Game #5: | Chicago needs to stop the losing streak, so they called upon The Rocket to get the job done. Southlake will go back to Pitching Chaos now that their bullpen is rested up. Chicago needed to give Clemens a few more warm up pitches. Instead, Nomar started the game off hot and blasted a two-run shot in the first inning. Southlake extends the lead one inning later on an RBI single from Ichiro. Chicago gets that run back in the bottom of the inning when Johnson stays hot with another bomb this series. Blalock says whatever you can do, I can do better as his solo shot in the third inning makes it a three-run lead once again. In the bottom of the third, five walks from Dubose would make the score 4-3 and be the end of the day for the Southpaw from Southlake. A wild pitch by Koplove would score two giving Chicago the lead 5-4. After yet another walk by the Southlake pitchers, Johnson continues with his mastery of the Southlake staff hitting a two run shot to extend the lead 7-4. The long ball continues for Chicago when Stewart adds a solo shot in the 6th to double up the score on Southlake 8-4. After a couple more walks and another wild pitch, the game became a blowout. Chicago would score 10 runs on just 7 hits (3 of them home runs) thanks to 11 walks and two wild pitches.Final Score: Demolition 10-4WP: Clemens (8-2) LP: Dubose (3-3) |
| Game #6: | Looking to split the series by taking both ends of this twinbill, Chicago goes to, Jason Schmidt. Jason wishes all his games could be against Southlake. He earns himself a pitcher of the week nomination by going 8 innings giving up just one hit while striking out 4.
Delgado continues the trend of hitting homeruns after Southlake pitchers give up a walk as he provides enough offense for the win. Final Score: Chicago 4-0 WP: Schmidt (8-3) |
| Series Summary: | A split at 3 games each. The book on Chicago having success was to be patient at the plate and then hit the mistake pitches. They were very effective at doing just that. In their three wins they took 20 free bases and banged 7 homeruns. In their three loses, they had just 8 walks and only 2 bombs.
Jason Schmidt and Mark Prior both earned pitcher of the week nominations. |
Hampton Huskies @ Manhattan Gas Hornets |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Season is getting close to half way – Hampton is selling to the contender/pretenders – and NO-HITTER alert! |
| Game #1: | After Manhattan gets off to 2-0 start in the 1st – the Huskies take over. 2 in the 2nd – Scott Hatteberg homer (6), 2 more in the 4th on back to back solo homers from power hitters Xavier Nady (2) and Alexander Gonzalez (3) and single run in the 8th. HAM 5-7-0 WP Webb (8-2) COL 2-4-0 LP Howard (2-1) |
| Game #2: | So the Gas Hornets again tally in the 1st – this time for 3 runs. Power hitter Xavier Nady slugs a 2 run homer (3) in the 5th to cut the Manhattan lead to 3-2, but Matt Stairs puts it away with a 2 run homer (9) in the 7th and Manhattan evens the series. Phelps is clobbered and out 5 days (ouch, with a double header coming up, that hurts). HAM 2- 6-1 LP Jeff Suppan (4-4) COL 5-10-1 WP Matt Morris (5-5) S Tom Gordon (19) |
| Game #3: | Manhattan fails to score in the 1st and most of the other innings as well. Huskies on the other hand score lots of times on 13 hits and smack a couple of homers – Marcus Giles (14) and Derrek Lee (21). Giles has 3 hit, 2 rbi game, Lee 2 rbis. Shawn Chacon gives up just 4 hits – 1 of them a solo homer to Ruben Sierra (4). Hampton goes up 2 to 1. HAM 7-13-0 WP Chacon (3-7) COL 1- 6-2 LP Halama (3-4) |
| Game #4: | Gas Hornets plate 1 in the 1st, and then 2 more in the 2nd. Both teams score 1 in the 3rd including a J.D. Drew homer (4). Huskies plate another run in the 4th and it’s 4-2, but then no one scores again somehow and Manhattan evens the series heading into the double header. HAM 2-9-2 LP Correia (3-4) COL 4-9-1 WP Wakefield (8-5) S Gordon (21) |
| Game #5: | In a game both teams hope the bullpens won’t be needed – one team gets that wish! Ruben Sierra clubs a 2 run double in the 4th for Manhattan. In the 6th, Alex Gonzalez leads off with a grounder to 3rd that ends up as a 2b error on McEwing. He moves to 3rd on a WP. Brian Anderson then gets Moeller to ground out 1-3. Then a whiff on Podsednik and a shallow fly out by Giles ends the threat. Gas Hornets hoping for some breathing room for Anderson and Matt Stairs comes through in the 8th with a solo homer (10). All this was important because the McEwing error and a Jeter error were the only 2 times a Huskie reached bases. That close to a PERFECT game, no hits, no walks, 29 BF and 3 Ks!!!! Brian Anderson into the NO-NO books. HAM 0-0-0 LP Wade Miller (2-4) COL 3-7-2 WP Anderson (5-3) |
| Game #6: | In the nightcap, the Gas Hornets again score in the 1st on a Derek Jeter homer (5). Hampton starts Brad Lidge as their rotation is all bolluxed up from fatigue. But then Hampton gets to Casey Fossum for 2 runs in the 3rd including a solo shot from Scott Podsednik (6) – their 1st hit in this game. The 2-1 Huskies lead lasts until Manhattan scores 2 in the 5th on rbi doubles from Orlando Palmeiro and Matt Stairs. Kim comes on in the 7th with 2 on and no outs and quashes the threat (rare this year) and then Tom “Flash” Gordon comes in for the save in the 9th – his 3rd of the series against his former team. The final out – a DP – was off the bat of Ty Wigginton, who packed him bags to settle into his new home in Manhattan as he joins the Gas Hornet after this weekend. Was he buttering up to his new team (or showing them what to expect)? HAM 2-6-1 LP Lidge (0-1) COL 3-9-1 WP Fossum (2-5) S Gordon (21) |
| Series Summary: | After a see-saw series through the first 4 days, Manhattan (with a no-hitter by Brian Anderson) managed a double header sweep to take the series 4-2. |
