MINERS DEAL STEVE SAX
The Gold River Miners announced their second deal in as many weeks and, today, General Manager Mitch Watnik discussed them. “It is time to send up the white flag and plan for our future,” he explained. “With Leon Durham becoming a full-time first baseman next year and Wally Backman returning from the minors, we had too many good players on the right side of the infield. So, we decided that our organization was better off stocking up on draft picks. Both of the players we dealt are excellent guys, but we had an overabundance of talent in those positions.”
He went on to discuss next year. “We look forward to having an infield of Garvey, Backman, Griffin, and Nettles/Jacoby. We have four outfielders with Gwynn, Leonard, Shelby, and Gladden. Jody Davis is still under contract and will catch. In the minors, we have Ron Darling and Dennis Boyd and we plan on Tommy John staying in the rotation.
Righetti will move to the ‘pen, joining Reardon and Bair. So, we are in good shape, along with 2 first round picks, 2 second round picks, our third round pick, and two fourth rounders. We are already hopeful about 1984, though there may be more trades in the offing.”
