FRANK TANANA – MWWL HALL OF FAME BALLOT BIO
Frank Tanana‘s illustrious career, spanning over two decades in the Mid-West Winter League (MWWL), makes him an undeniable selection for the Hall of Fame. His career totals of 230 wins and 2,456 strikeouts are marks of sustained excellence and dominance that few have ever reached. Tanana was a workhorse, accumulating 3626.1 career innings pitched and starting in 509 games.
Tanana played for eight different MWWL teams: the Atlantic City Surf, the Hatfield Franks, the Antietam Brigade, the Nottingham Nighthawks, the Cedar Park Bears, the Valdosta Bombers, the Michigan Marauders, and the Montana Cutthroats.
His peak came in the mid-1970s. From 1974-1977, first with the Hatfield Franks and then the Antietam Brigade, he put together a historic run, posting an astonishing 93 wins over four seasons. In 1976, he led the MWWL in wins with 23, while boasting a minuscule 2.28 ERA and a league-leading 294 strikeouts. The following year, 1977, he secured 26 wins, the most in his career, alongside a spectacular 2.29 ERA and a sub-1.00 WHIP of $0.95$. This incredible stretch earned him three consecutive All-Star Game selections from 1975 to 1977.
Tanana’s career ERA of 3.23 and WHIP of 1.19 over 21 seasons demonstrate his consistently high level of pitching. His postseason success is further evidence of his value, with a superb 2.11 ERA in Division Series play. Frank Tanana‘s combination of longevity, statistical dominance, and peak performance cements his status as one of the MWWL’s greatest pitchers.
