The curtain has officially closed on the 2002 Mid-West Winter League (MWWL) season, and with it comes the much-anticipated announcement of the 2002 MWWL Awards! This year’s honors celebrate not only the league’s brightest stars but also the unforgettable moments and remarkable achievements that defined an extraordinary season. 2001 MWWL AWARDS
T

Castle Rock’s Barry Bonds won the Most Valuable Player in the American League – Bonds batted .338 with 73 Home runs, 146 RBI, and an astonishing .504 On Base Percentage. Lance Berkman, playing for the upstart and eventual World Series Champion Flora-Bama Mullets took home the honors in the National League, Berkman launched 46 Homr runs, drove in 117 RBI, & batted .328 on the season.
Chicago’s Darryl Kile an in-season trade picked up the American League Cy Young Award winning 20 games, losing 8, with an ERA of 2.81 & a whip of 1.01. Randy Johnson was an in-season acquisition for the Flora-Bama Mullets, from the Blarney Drive Bandits wins his 6th National Leagues Cy Young Award, 3rd in a row, and finished the season with 27 Wins, 3 losses, a 1.99 ERA & a Whip of an unreal 0.71.
Albert Pujols of the Hougton Penguins wins the American League Rookie of the Year. Pujols had 32 Home Runs, & 112 RBI while batting .302 in this Rookie campaign. Pitcher Roy Oswalt of the Hollywood Vampires won the National League Rookie of the Year, It was Hollywood’s 2nd Rookie of the Year in a row as Oswalt went 14 & 2 with a .276 ERA and a .093 Whip.
Travis Phelps won the American League Rolaids Reliever of the Year for Fort Worth, racking up 39 saves, a 1.48 ERA & 1.02 Whip in 58 games & 61 innings of work. Gladstone’s Felix Rodriguez won the National League Rolaids Reliever of the Year Award, also knocking out 39 saves, but in an unprecedented 85 Innings of work, a 0.42 ERA, and a 0.58 Whip made Rodriguez take home this award with ease.
Manager Jarl Jackson of the Fort Worth Panthers took home the Manager of the Year Award in the American League leading his Fort Worth Panthers to 107 Wins with only 55 losses. The fresh face of Chris Douglass from the Flora-Bama Mullets led his squad to a 109-53 season, & the eventual 2001 MWBL World Series to prove not only was he Manager of the Year, this year, but seemingly with more of those to come.

2000 MWWL AWARDS

Monroeville’s Vladimir Guerrero won the Most Valuable Player in the American League & Richard Hidalgo of the Santa Rosa Beach Bums won the National League’s Most Valuable Player Award.
Chicago’s Pedro Martinez won the American League Cy Young Award. Randy Johnson of Blarney Drive wins his 5th National Leagues Cy Young Award.
Montreal’s Shane Spencer won the American League Rookie of the Year & Mark Quinn of the Hollywood Vampires won the National League Rookie of the Year.
Billy Koch won the American League Rolaids Reliever of the Year for DeWitt & Robb Nen of Connecticut won the National League Rolaids Reliever of the Year Award.
Managers George Skiles of the California Quakes took home the Manager of the Year Award in the American League & Patrick Vukelich of the Blarney Drive Bandits took the honors in the National League.

Fort Worth’s Kevin Brown won the American League Cy Young & Tim Wakefield of the Manhattan Gas Hornets won the National Leagues Cy Young Award.
Harper Wood’s Todd Helton won the American League Rookie of the Year & Ben Grieve of the Newark Bears won the National League Rookie of the Year.
Mike Jackson won the American League Rolaids Reliever of the Year for Fort Worth & Tom Gordon of Hampton won the National League Rolaids Reliever of the Year Award.
Managers Chris DeMecurio of the World Series Champion – Corktown Bootleggers took home the Manager of the Year Award in the American League & Bill Schindel of Manhattan (National League Champions) took the honors in the National League.

Harper Woods’s Larry Walker won the Most Valuable Player in the American League & Tino Martinez of the Manhattan Gas Hornets won the National League’s Most Valuable Player Award.
Flossmoor’s Greg Maddux won the American League Cy Young as Randy Johnson of the Blarney Drive Bandits won the National Leagues Cy Young Award.
New Hampshire’s Lee Steven won the American League Rookie of the Year & Matt Morris of Manhattan won the National League Rookie of the Year.
Trevor Hoffman won the American League Rolaids Reliever of the Year for California & Randy Myers of Sugar Land won the National League Rolaids Reliever of the Year Award.
Managers John Niespodzianski of Steel City took home the Manager of the Year Award in the National League & George Skiles of California took the honors in the American League.
