Hollywood Vampires @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: Gas Hornets look to rebound after dismal week at Winnipeg (they always seem to beat us up). So we get to host Hollywood – hmmm Hollywood is well in the lead for the most lottery balls! We certainly don’t want to mess with those balls…..
Game #1: Well – Vampires don’t seem to have the script as they jump off to a 4-0 lead after 3 – a 3 run Castro double in the 2nd sparks the splurge. However, Gas Hornets feeble pitching shuts them out the rest of the way and Bennett (filling in for injured Kendall) goes 2 for 4 and drives in 3 as Manhattan ties it with a 4 spot in the 6th and gets the game winner in the 7th.
HLW 4- 8-0 LP Nunez (1-2)
MGH 5-12-1 WP Shaw (4-1) S Kim (5)
Game #2: In typical Manhattan fashion – tons of hitting and scoring on both sides – limited pitching. 5-3 Vampires after 3 – Reed is giving up homers, 3 of them in his 6 innings (and 8 runs – 5 earned). Paul Konerko goes deep twice (15, 16) and nets 4 rbis. Quinn adds a solo shot (18) after Konerko’s 1st dinger. Gas Hornets are keeping pace scoring 3 in the 5th and 7th – the 3 in the 7th on a Tino Martinez 3 run homer (11) flipped the score from 8-7 Vampires to 10-8 Gas Hornets. And that ends up the final!
HLW 8-13-1 LP Bullinger (4-1) BS (2)
MGH 10-15-2 WP Mantei (6-1)
Game #3: Hollywood again strikes heavy and 1st with Konerko 3 run dinger (17) in the 1st. Manhattan rebounds with 5 in the 2nd and then they score a bunch more enroute to an 11-4 win. Jeter (11) and Durham (14) homer – Durham goes 4 for 5 with 5 rbis. Furcal (3) homers late for Hollywood – Furcal also stole a LOT of bases this week!!
HLW 4- 8-0 LP Garcia (1-9)
MGH 11-16-0 WP Bell (9-7)
Game #4: Manhattan actually scores 1st in this one (uh-oh) with 3 in the 1st – Garrett Anderson 2 run double sparks the inning. Hollywood answers with 1 in the 2nd and 3rd – one of them a Millar (13) homer, the other a Velarde rbi single. Gas Hornets match those single runs for a 5-2 lead after 3. Then Halama leaves with a sore arm (miss 5 days). And then Millar homers again (14) in the 9th – and Donne Wall has to come in to close it out.
HLW 3-6-2 LP Bere (2-13)
MGH 5-8-2 WP Kim (4-3) S Wall (12)
Game #5: If you leave out the 2nd inning, Hollywood wins 4-3! However, the Gas Hornets plate ELEVEN (11) runs in the bottom of the 2nd – 9 off Halladay who gives up 6 hits, 3 walks and HBP to the 14 batters he faces in the game. Kendall homers (11), gets 2 hits, 3 rbis. And a bunch of other guys had fun days as well. Ortiz (8) homers for 3 runs in the 5th for Hollywood and Verlarde cracks a solo shot (7) in the 3rd. Otherwise it was a long day for Hollywood.
HLW 4-10-0 LP Halladay (0-7)
MGH 14-15-0 WP Anderson (9-9)
Game #6: The sweep is in sight but Hollywood starts by scoring 2 in the 1st, Floyd and Konerko driving them in. Gas Hornets get 1 back on Kendall rbi single in the bottom half. Then Hayes drives in a run for the Vampires in the 3rd – Kendall counters with a homer (12) in the 6th – but that’s all the Gas Hornets could get off Nunez. Then Foulke (19*) and Isringhausen (18*) close out the 8th and 9th to get a W for the visitors!
HLW 3- 6-0 WP Nunez (2-2)
MGH 2-12-1 LP Wakefield
13 LOB as opportunities were there all game. But biggest bonehead play was not giving up a runner to draw a throw as Kendall is cut down at home for 2nd out in the 9th that would have tied the score! Melhuse cut him down at home to preserve the lead for the Vampires!!
Series Summary: Gas Hornets take the series 5 to 1 flipping last week’s debacle. We host Hampton next week before heading to Baltimore as season enters the final weeks.
