|
| Game #1: | Two errors by the Panther’s put Ft. Worth down 5-zip going into the bottom of the 3rd. Owen tripled home two runs in the first and he ater scored on a Whitaker single. A double by Butler in the 2nd and a single by Owen combined with an error led to the 5th Stars run. Although he had allowed 5 runs only one of the runs was earned against Panther starter Holman. In the bottom of the 3rd Ft. Worth got a run on a Thompson single and another run on an infield hit by McGriff. The next inning McGee triples home a run and then later scores on a sac fly. For a while it looked like it might be an easy win for Detroit, but the Panther’s not only made up a 5 run deficit they turned the game into a rout in the 5th and 6th innings. Keith Hernandez tied the game in the 5th, but the Panther’s would score three more times in the frame highlighted by a two run homer by McGee. Then in the 6th Ft. Worth would score 6 more times. Kruk adds a meaningless home run in the 9th for Detroit. McGee hits for the cycle for Ft. Worth.FINAL SCORE: PANTHERS 14, STARS 7 |
| Game #2: | An error by Panther 2B, Ripken led to a run in the third for Detroit, but the Panther’s tied game the next half inning on a throwing error by Stars starter, Bielecki. Later in the third Kelly beats the throw to first on a potential double play as Ft. Worth goes up 2-1. In the top of the 4th Parker gets fisted but has enough strength to get a blooper RBI single to tie the game at 2. In the 5th Daugherty would put Detroit into the lead with a single. Jack would also help extend the lead in the 7th, “The pitch comes in … hard grounder into the hole … RIPKEN to his left … and he won’t get it base hit for DAUGHERTY … BELL is rounding third … he ran right through the red light he’s headed for the plate … he will score … BUTLER’s around second … he’s headed for third the throw … not in time … safe at third! … and DAUGHERTY’s on at first the PANTHERS were just outhustled on that play STARS 4, PANTHERS 2 So the single drives in one … and DETROIT increases its lead … this ballgame now 4-2. “The lead was short-lived as the Panther’s tied the game in the bottom of the 7th, “Infield deep … speedy WINNINGHAM edging down the line … the pitch to THOMAS – THOMAS drives one down the left field line … if it stays fair … and it’s … gone! Andres ties it up! … home run for THOMAS … and two runs score Andres coming around the bases … he loves a trip downtown … he claps his hands he’s greeted at the plate STARS 4, PANTHERS 4 So THOMAS has his 1st homer of the season … the PANTHERS add two big runs and the PANTHERS have tied this game! … just listen to that crowd!”Thomas would then deliver the game winning hit in the 8th when he doubled home two more runs. Thomas would account for 5 of the 6 Panther runs (4 RBI and 1 run scored).FINAL SCORE: PANTHERS 6, STARS 4 |
| Game #3: | It was all Detroit in this game as Gubicza would go 8 strong frames allowing only 1 run. Five Stars had a multi-hit game and Berryhill had a three run home. Panther rookie pitcher Abbott makes a case to go back into the rotation after he clearly pitches better than starter Anderson.FINAL SCORE: STARS 8, PANTHERS 1 |
| Game #4: | With two outs in the top of the first Balboni singles in a run for Detroit. Ft. Worth would tie the game in the bottom of the first on a sac fly by Lansford. A wild pitch and an infield single by McGriff would give the Panthers a 3-1 lead after 3 innings, but the Stars would tie the game in the 4th on a double by Bell and a single by Berryhill. Then the pitching would dominate for both teams for the next 8 innings until the bottom of the 13th when Dwight Smith came to the dish with a runner on 2nd with one out, “LANSFORD moves another step away from second … LEFFERTS into his motion … delivers a hot grounder down the line … PRESLEY dives … it skips by him … fair ball! rolling into the corner … LANSFORD’s around third … it’s all over! … LANSFORD scores”FINAL SCORE: PANTHERS 4, STARS 3 |
| Game #5: | Ahead 1-0 Parrish just misses a grand slam but he still gets a sac fly as the Panther’s go up 2-0 at the end of the first. A double by Thompson and a single by Ripken would extend the Panther’s lead to 4-0. With two outs in the 3rd DH, Franco stepped up to hit, “BLYLEVEN kicks and deals … this one could have wings … up … up! … and away! a three-run shot to left … that pitch was right in his wheelhouse you can’t get away with a pitch like that … not in this league PANTHERS 4, STARS 3. So FRANCO has his 2nd homer of the season … the STARS have three runs and the STARS are barreling down on the PANTHERS … they are within one … score now 4-3 and this crowd is suddenly paying attention … and FRANCO now with 19 runs batted in.” The Panthers would put the game away in the 7th when Ripken came up with one runner on, “The two-strike pitch … RIPKEN swings … he hits it well toward COLEMAN … it’ll be out of here way out of here! … a two-run dinger … his 1st home run of the season”FINAL SCORE: PANTHERS 6, STARS 3 |

| Chicago Demolition @ Traverse City Tigers | |
|---|---|
| Series Preview |
The defending World Champions come in to Wuerfel Park to play the defending A.L. West Division Champion – Traverse City Tigers, who have not played anything like their 1988 counterparts. This should be a good series in a rematch of the 1988 ALCS.
|
| Game #1: |
Both starting pitchers, Roger Clemens (Chicago) & Eric King (Traverse City) were all over the place, as this one came down to two big innings by the Tigers.Joe Carter led the charge with a two-run double in the bottom of the 3rd, finishing the day 2-for-5 with 3 RBI. Chicago’s reliever Larry Anderson did his best to try keep the Tigers off the board, as the Demolition chipped away at the Tigers lead, but the Tigers hold on as Doug Jones picks up Save #5.
TRAVERSE CITY 7, CHICAGO 6
|
| Game #2: |
Darryl Strawberry‘s three-run HR in the top of the 3rd, and Gene Larkin‘s solo HR in the 4th (both off Charlie Hough, who also had 5 walks) was the difference in this one; along with a great complete-game performance by Orel Hershiser, allowing 7 hits & a run.’Hershiser mproves to 3-2, with a 2.45 ERA.
CHICAGO 5, TRAVERSE CITY 1
|
| Game #3: | Greg Maddux & the Tigers did not show up in this one, and found themselves down 9-0 after 3 innings. Back-to-back complete games by Chicago starters, as Doug Drabek this time, goes the distance, improving to a 3-0 record, with an excellent ERA of 1.52!Darryl Strawberry once again hit a three-run HR, but the man who stole the show was Bill Doran, who hit 2 HR’s for the night, going 3-for-5, with 2 runs & 5 RBI for the night.Five other Chicago regulars collected at least 2 hits, other than Doran’s 3 for the night. A Chicago hit total for 15, while the Tigers could only manage 5 hits. The Tigers’ only run came of a solo HR by Greg Brock (his 4th HR of the season). Maddux falls to 1-4, with a 4.91 ERA.CHICAGO 13, TRAVERSE CITY 1 |
| Game #4: |
Chicago’s lineup must have been tapped out from all their hits the night before, as they were held to 3 hits, in a complete-game shutout by the Tigers’ Jose Rijo. Rijo improves to 3-4, with a 3.22 ERA — he has rebounded nicely after a horrible 0-2 season start with a 12.91 ERA. He is now the Tigers’ best starter at this point of the season, but has already logged a lot of action. The Tigers lineup only managed 5 hits again, but their three runs, all came off RBI doubles by Pete O’Brien, Bob Boone & Dante Bichette.
TRAVERSE CITY 3, CHICAGO 0
|
| Game #5: | Greg Maddux got the nod after pitching only two innings in the 3rd game of the series. He wasn’t sharp, but managed to keep the Chicago lineup under control, allowing only 2 ER’s & 7 hits in 6 innings. Dave Stieb for the Demolition stayed in one inning too long, had the same game as Maddux through 6, but would allow a big three-run bottom of the 7th by the Tigers.Henry Cotto for the Tigers, went 2-for-4, 2B, 2 runs & 2 RBI for the night.Ken Dayley pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the win (1-2), as Doug Jones comes into the game with a non-save situation and closes the door on Chicago.TRAVERSE CITY 6, CHICAGO 2 |
| Series Summary |
Tigers earn a 3-2 series victory, but have a lot of climbing to do in the division. A great team morale-lifting series victory for T.C.,
with just a tad bit of revenge on the team that knocked them out of the ALCS, 4-1. |

By the ninth nothing had changed, into the tenth and Valdosta pushes a run across after Wallach doubles, Garcia comes into run for him and a batter later Reynolds drives him home for the 4-3 lead. Bottom of the tenth and an error by Oquendo with a runner on first provided the crack in the defense that Clovis needed, Gossage lost all semblance of control and walked Henderson and McDowell to send home the tying run before getting out of the inning. Tied at 4 into the 13th, David Wells mowed down the Bombers for his third inning of pressure relief work. | Game #3: | Bombers send Don “Caveman” Robinson to the mound to face John Smiley of the Cougars.Heading into the bottom of the ninth and the Bombers have scratched out a 3-1 lead. Guetterman was on the mound to try and nail it down and end the Bombers 4 game losing streak. Barfield led off with a walk to pump some life into the Cougar faithful and Walling hit a pinch single to bring everyone to their feet. Franco came on to try and put out the fast developing fire. Henderson bounced on back to the mound but was to quick to double up leaving the Cougars with only one more out. Gantner would not bite on the slider and drew a walk loading the bases. McDowell showed unusual patience as well and walked as well making the score 3-2 with the tying run only 90 feet away. | Germantown Grays @ Manhattan Gas Hornets | |

The Germanton Grays meet up in the Big Apple against the Manhattan Gas Hornets – both teams sporting 16-10 records. Expect a tough series – the Grays look a lot like the Gas Hornets from a few years ago, Roberts, McGwire, Morgan … but then again, what goes around comes around. Mac, Murph, Cami, – Gas Hornet pitchers are leery (or is that Leary).

| Game #1: |
Manhattan up 1-0 in the 1st, but the Grays score 1 in the 6th and 1 in the 8th for the 2-1 win. Roberts a triple, big Mac 0 for 4, but Finley goes 7 ip, 8 hits, 1 run to run his perfect record to 6-0.GER 2-4-1 WP Finley (6-0) S Montgomery (9)MGH 1-8-0 LP Clary (2-1) (4 hits in 7 ip, but …)

| Cedar Park Bears @ California Quakes | |
|---|---|
| Series Preview |
First place California, relying on its top-tier pitching staff, hosts a third place Cedar Park team that boasts a potent lineup.
|
| Game #1: |
Mike Boddicker and Zane Smith square off in Game 1, but this one was all Boddicker and a potent Cedar Park offense. Boddicker goes 9 strong while giving up only two, meaningless 9th inning runs. Cedar Park’s lineup blasts 4 home runs, and Walton and Fitzgerald each knock in 3 en route to a 12-2 shellacking of the hometown Quakes.
CPB – 12CAL – 2W – Boddicker (2-2)L – Smith (1-2)
|
| Game #2: |
Two 3-game winners face off, with Cerutti trying to continue Cedar Park’s dominance and Heaton hoping to stop the bleeding. This time it was California’s offense that did the pouncing, jumping all over Cerutti in a 6-run 3rd propelled by Glenn Davis’ a two-run blast, his 7th of the season. It would be all California would need.
CPB – 3CAL – 8W – Heaton (4-0)L – Cerutti (3-1)S – Harnisch (1)
|
| Game #3: |
Swindell v. Ryan. The Bears scraped together a couple runs in the 3rd to take the early 2-0 lead, and extend their lead to 4 off a Vance Law home run in the 6th, a lead that would prove insurmountable. California scores 3 in the 8th, but leave 10 on base in the losing effort.
CPB – 4CAL – 3W – Swindell (2-1)L – Ryan (3-2)S – Olson (5)
|
| Game #4: | Scott Garrelts and Mike Moore face off in a potential pitchers’ duel. California jumped to an early lead on Dunston’s solo shot in the bottom of the 2nd, and would squeeze out 4 more over the course of the first 7 innings. Up 5-0 in the top of the 9th, California’s bullpen implodes, with Cedar Park tagging Worrell, Knudson, and McClure for 5 runs and handing McClure his first blown save of the young season. Over the next 10 innings, Cedar Park and California would 1-run innings in the 17th and 19th, with California erasing 1-run go-ahead home runs in each. This one would be decided in the 22nd when Blauser blasted a 3-run home run off Mike Scott, California’s only remaining arm. California attempted yet another comeback, but could only muster a single run. Both teams enjoyed a 19-hit day, but California was once again incredibly inefficient, leaving 27 men on base.CPB – 10CAL – 8W – Olson (2-1)L – Scott (2-3) |
| Game #5: |
With a depleted pitching staff, California gives Knudson his first spot start of the season, facing off against Witt. Knudson had his best stuff in this one, cruising to a complete game win. Cedar Park’s only offense was a 4-4, 1 HR night by Will Clark.
CPB – 1CAL – 3W – Knudson (1-0)L – Witt (1-3)
