1982 DIVISION SERIES
East Side vs. Fort Worth –
Fort Worth wins both at home in the bottom of the 9th. Smalley hit a sac fly in the first game and Parrish coming on as a pinch hitter gets hit with the bases loaded in the second game.
The Fight Club fought to keep each game close, but the Panthers completed the sweep behind Stuper.
Steel City vs. Old Mill –
Steel City and Old Mill split the 1st 2 at Old Mill.
Steel City has high hopes with a series split on the road, but lays a pair of rotten eggs in front of the home crowd, by scores of 5-1 and 11-5.
Both Luis Leal and Dennis Martinez are terrible on the mound, and that pretty much sums it up. The bats were also pretty cold, but the pitching is the primary reason that the Sluggers are slagged.
Hollywood vs. Valdosta –
Game 1: Sutcliffe vs Bannister.
Hollywood took an early 1-0 lead on a Rick Sweet double, but it was Valdosta’s 3 homers that did in Hollywood in the end. Valdosta wins 5-2 thanks to a 3-run 8th capped by Wallach’s 2-run shot.
Game 2: Andujar vs Gullickson.
This was probably my favorite game. It featured an Andujar RBI single, a Don Slaught 2-out 9th inning run tying RBI and the more memorable play…..Eddie Murray stealing home in the 10th to win the game for Hollywood 3-2.
Game 3: Blue vs Niekro.
This was probably Jim’s favorite game. Hollywood was up 3-1 with 2-on and 2-outs in the 9th. With Al Holland on the mound, Dale Berra hits a 3-run HR to win the game for Valdosta 4-3. This was also the series changing game.
Game 4: Jenkins vs Bannister.
Down 2-games to 1, Hollywood hopes to muster up some offense finally….It doesn’t work. Valdosta takes the early lead and never looks back. 3 homeruns later they trounce Hollywood 6-2 for the series win.
Valdosta wins the series 3 games to 1.
Even though Hollywood out hit Valdosta, Valdosta hammered out 8 HRs vs 2 for Hollywood
Valdosta’s ERA was 2.17 vs Hollywood’s 4.00
Gold River vs. Germantown –
Hello from Germantown, where the Grays host the Minorss for the first two of a five-game set for the Division series. Sit back and enjoy, it’s a brisk 28 degrees and snow showers in the forecast.
Game 1. The Grays are sending righty Dan Petry to the mound to face lefty Pete Falcome. Miners take an early lead on a Jackson round tripper with 2-out in the 1st, 1-0. Miners score again in the 2nd, Trevino and Moreno singled and Griffin doubled, 2-0. Miners make it 3-0 in the 5th when Griffin doubled and Garvey singled him home. The Grays finally wake-up in the bottom half on a Ray leadoff homer, 3-1 Miners. The Grays then filled the bases with 1-out in the 6th and Ray lifted a sacrifice fly to right, 3-2. Grays then tie it in the 7th as PH Smith reached first on a Reardon muff, PR Landreaux advanced on a ground out and Yount banged a 2-out triple, 3-3. In the 8th Cooper doubled and PH Cruz reached on an infield hit to make it first and third with 0-out. Ray grounds it to Sax who nails Cooper at the plate and Porter bounced into a double play. In the 10th Yount leads off with a double and Cooper grounds one to Hassler who throws it by Nettles trying to make the play at third.
Miners Jackson was 2-4 RBI R HR and Griffin 2-4 RBI R 2b. Falcone went 6IP allowing 2R on 7H 0W w/ 3K. Reardon and Hassler pitched 3.1 innings and didn’t give up an earned run.
Grays Yount went 3-5 RBI 2R 2b 3b and Ray 1-3 2RBI R HR

Game 2. The Grays send righty Lea to the mound to face righty Bill Lackey. Again Jackson hits a 2-out homer in the 1st. This time with a man aboard, Miners 2-0. Dawson doubled in the 2nd, advanced to third and the Minors walk Krenchicki to get to Lea with 2-out. The Grays pull Lea for PH Thompson who singled to center advancing Kranchicki to third, 2-1 Miners. Laskey then walked Cruz and gave up a GRAND SLAM HOMER to Landreaux, yes LANDREAUX, Grays 5-2. Jackson again in the 4th, good thing he was leadoff, Grays 5-3. They should call him MR. OCTOBER!!! Sax singled and Durham walked followed by a Garvey single to leadoff the 5th, Grays 5-4 and Jackson is up. Jackson sends Cruz to the fence, but not quite. Miners Durham smacks a round tripper in the 7th to tie it up, 5-5. In the bottom half with 2-out Yount singled, stole and scored on a Cooper single to right, grays 6-5. Miners load the bases in the 8th, but DeLeon entices a double play out of PH Maddox. And the game ends with Jackson on deck 1-run down.
Miners Jackson was 2-4 3RBI 2R 2HR. Underwood allowed 1R in 5 innings of relief but picked up the loss.
Grays Landreaux was 2-3 4RBI R HR and Yount 2-4 R. Jackson and Caudill pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Zahn (GER) vs. John (GRM). In the bottom of the first, the Miners load the bases with two down, but Brown fans to leave them. In the fourth, Decinces singles and takes third on a single by Cooper. With one down, Nichols flies to center and Brown throws Decinces out at home to end the threat. Ray opens the fifth with a triple. Hassey’s fly ball isn’t deep enough, but Zahn’s is, to make it 1-0 for the Grays. Jackson makes it 2-1 in the bottom half with a booming homer to right. Davis makes it 3-1 in the sixth with a solo blast. Krenchiki hits for Zahn, who gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks with 5 punchouts, with two down in the seventh. DeLeon pitches the bottom half. Dawson doubles to start the eighth and takes third on a ground ball. Decinces’ grounds one up the middle, but Sax throws Dawson out at home to keep it 3-1. John goes the distance to keep the Miners in the hunt.
Petry (GER) vs. Palmer (GRM). Decinces triples to open the second and Cooper doubles him home to make it 1-0. Dawson’s double makes it 2-0 for the visitors. Two outs later, Petry singles, but Durham throws out Dawson to finish the frame. In the fourth, Decinces doubles and Cooper doubles him home. Dawson makes it back-to-back-to-back two-baggers and a 4-0 advantage. Porter joins in the fun for a 5-0 lead. Hassler is summoned from the ‘pen to try to restore order and gets the first 3 batters he faces. The Miners load the bases in the fifth with one out, including a single by Leonard, who hit for Hassler. Sax forces Griffin at home, but Jackson goes deep to cut the lead to 5-4. Garvey and Nettles follow with singles, but Davis homers to give the Miners a 7-5 lead. Underwood pitches the sixth for the Miners, with Leonard staying in the game in left and Durham moving to center. Ray homers in the seventh to cut the lead to 7-6. Veryzer hits for Petry, who gave up 8 hits and 7 runs, next, and homers to tie it. Nichols hits for Porter with Cooper on first and two down in the eighth and grounds to Griffin, who throws it away. Ray singles to give the Grays the lead back. Otis hits for Bergmeier, who pitched the bottom of the seventh. Bair replaces Underwood, with Bench taking third in the double-switch. The Grays score an insurance run in the ninth, but Caudill pitches the eighth and ninth without allowing a runner past second for the save and the series clincher.
