DeWitt Tigers @ Chicago Demolition |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | The Chicago Demolition, currently holding a 54-33 record and sitting just one game out of first place in the American League Central, are set to face off against the DeWitt Tigers, who are 34-53 and 19 games back in the American League East. With playoff hopes burning bright, the Demolition enter the series as heavy favorites, boasting a 75% chance to claim victory thanks to their strong pitching and deep lineup. Meanwhile, the Tigers, out of playoff contention, will look to play spoiler and salvage pride in what has been a challenging season. All eyes will be on whether Chicago can maintain their momentum or if DeWitt can pull off an upset. |
| Game #1: | In a tight contest that saw both starting pitchers duel through the mid-innings, the Chicago Demolition edged out the DeWitt Tigers with a 4-3 victory.
The Demolition jumped to an early lead in the 1st inning when Carlos Delgado crushed a two-run home run off Bartolo Colon. Chicago starter Roger Clemens was dominant early, carrying a shutout into the 6th before Carlos Pena flipped the script with a massive three-run blast, giving DeWitt a 3-2 lead. Chicago responded immediately in the bottom half of the frame, tying the game on an RBI fielder’s choice by Hideki Matsui. The deadlock remained until the bottom of the 8th, when Shannon Stewart hammered a solo home run off Steve Reed to put Chicago ahead for good. Brendan Donnelly earned the win in relief, navigating a two-out walk in the 9th to secure the win. Final Score: Chicago 4 – DeWitt 3 Win: Brendan Donnelly 5-2 (1.80) |
| Game #2: | In a high-scoring marathon that featured explosive offense from both sides, the Chicago Demolition outlasted the DeWitt Tigers 13-11. The game was a see-saw battle from the start, with DeWitt’s Scott Spiezio and Travis Lee launching early home runs to keep the Tigers competitive. However, the Demolition offense was relentless, fueled by Ben Higginson’s solo blast and a dominant performance from Tim Salmon.
The definitive blow came in a massive bottom of the 7th. With the bases loaded and the game tied, Salmon crushed a grand slam off Scott Eyre, punctuating a seven-run inning that put Chicago ahead 13-7. The Tigers mounted a valiant late-inning comeback, including a long ball from Sammy Sosa and a dramatic three-run pinch-hit homer by Chris Woodward in the 9th, but Billy Wagner eventually slammed the door to secure the victory. Final Score: Chicago 13 – DeWitt 11 Win: Danny Patterson 1-0 (3.00) |
| Game #3: | In a classic pitcher’s duel that lived up to the billing, the DeWitt Tigers scraped out a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Demolition.
The game was defined by a masterful performance from Greg Maddux, who navigated through eight innings of high-pressure baseball. Despite an error-prone start and allowing Chicago to put runners in scoring position several times—including a dangerous 7th inning where he issued a walk and a stolen base to Roberto Alomar—Maddux remained poised, inducing a crucial double play in the 4th and a key flyout in the 9th to seal the complete-game shutout. On the other side, Pedro Martinez was nearly untouchable, racking up 11 strikeouts through 8.1 innings. However, his one lapse came in the 9th; after Juan Pierre reached on a single and stole second, Mike Cameron delivered a deep sacrifice fly to right, allowing Pierre to slide home for the game’s only run. Final Score: DeWitt 1 – Chicago 0 Win: Greg Maddux 7-8 (4.86) |
| Game #4: | In a clinical display of pitching dominance, the Chicago Demolition shut out the DeWitt Tigers 5-0. The story of the game was Jason Schmidt, who carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning before Melvin Mora finally broke it up with a lead-off double. Schmidt finished the complete-game masterpiece allowing just two hits while striking out five.
DeWitt faced early adversity when starter Kirk Rueter left the game in the 3rd inning with a shoulder injury. Reliever Paul Abbott struggled in his stead, particularly in the 4th, where Chicago manufactured two runs through walks and a slow-rolling RBI single by Tony Batista. The Demolition broke the game open in the 5th when Shannon Stewart launched a towering three-run home run to center field. Despite late doubles from Mora and Orlando Hudson, the Tigers’ offense remained dormant against Schmidt’s power pitching, ending the game with a whimper as Sammy Sosa struck out to end the 9th. Final Score: Chicago 5 – DeWitt 0 Win: Jason Schmidt 10-4 (2.13) |
| Game #5: | In a game that was essentially decided by the second inning, the DeWitt Tigers dismantled the Chicago Demolition 11-6. The Tigers’ offense exploded early against Chicago starter Jae Seo, batting around in a ten-run second inning. The onslaught featured a three-run triple by Scott Spiezio and a massive two-run home run from Sammy Sosa, who finished the day with three hits.
Chicago refused to go quietly, clawing back with a three-run third inning highlighted by a Roberto Alomar double. Carlos Delgado added a late solo blast in the 8th, but the early deficit proved insurmountable. Ryan Dempster earned the win despite a shaky outing, surrendering 12 hits over six innings. The Demolition’s bullpen, led by Terry Adams, managed to stabilize the game late, but the damage was done. DeWitt’s relentless early-inning pressure and Chicago’s defensive lapses, including multiple errors, defined this high-scoring affair. Final Score: DeWitt 11 / Chicago 6 Win: Ryan Dempster 3-5 (10.17) |
| Game #6: | In a battle of baseball titans, the Chicago Demolition overcame an early deficit to defeat the DeWitt Tigers 6-3.
The Tigers struck first, powered by solo home runs from Andruw Jones in the 2nd and Adrian Beltre in the 6th. However, the Demolition offense erupted in the bottom of the 6th. After Hideki Matsui drove in a run with a double, Tony Batista delivered the game’s decisive blow—a towering two-run home run to right field that put Chicago ahead for good. The Demolition added insurance runs later that inning via RBI singles from Edgar Renteria and Shannon Stewart. Roger Clemens earned the win, grinding through six innings and allowing three runs, while Billy Wagner was lights-out in relief, pitching three scoreless innings to earn his 18th save. Bartolo Colon took the loss, despite striking out seven, as the Tigers’ bullpen couldn’t hold the lead. Final Score: Chicago 6 – DeWitt 3 Win: Roger Clemens 9-4 (3.58) |
| Series Summary: | The Chicago Demolition solidified their postseason aspirations by taking four of six games against the DeWitt Tigers, though the series proved far more volatile than the records suggested. Chicago’s heavy-hitter status was on full display in the slugfests, punctuated by Tim Salmon’s massive grand slam during a 13-11 marathon victory and Tony Batista’s decisive two-run homer that secured a 6-3 comeback win. The Demolition also flexed their rotation’s muscle, led by Jason Schmidt’s near no-hitter in a clinical 5-0 shutout.
Despite the series loss, the Tigers played the role of spoiler with surprising effectiveness, highlighted by a masterclass from Greg Maddux. Maddux’s eight-inning gem secured a tense 1-0 shutout, outdueling a brilliant Pedro Martinez in a game decided by a lone sacrifice fly. DeWitt’s peak offensive performance came in an 11-6 dismantling of Chicago, where they batted around for a ten-run second inning that featured a Sammy Sosa blast and left the Demolition stunned. While DeWitt showed they could punch up with explosive innings and elite starting pitching, Chicago’s depth ultimately prevailed. The Demolition’s ability to find late-inning heroics—including Shannon Stewart’s go-ahead solo shot in the series opener—allowed them to maintain their momentum in the American League Central. Series Result: Chicago wins 4-2 |

Iowa Giants @ Southlake Stealers |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | The Giants come to Southlake to face off against the red-hot Stealers, winners of 15 of their last 17 games. The Giants are in second place looking up at Corktown in the AL East but are currently only 4.5 games away from the second wild card slot.
Iowa pitching is in the middle of the pack in the AL. They are led by Danny Graves and his 8 victories and 3.71 ERA. When they get to their bullpen Rolaids Relief Candidate Guardado is dependable. He enters the second half of the year with 15 saves, 3 wins and an ERA under 2.50. The Giant offense while in 4th in the league in batting average lags in slugging and runs scored. They put a lot of guys on base but can’t seem to string together enough hits to score them, nor do they have much power. The offense is built around Damon and Young, so look for the Stealers to pitch around those two this series. The Stealers continue to lean into their bullpen and their “Pitching Chaos” Approach. Cy Young Candidate Mark Prior is first or second in nearly every pitching category and anchors the staff. The bullpen has 8 different arms they can throw at you at any time. The bullpen has an ERA of 2.43 in over 351 innings with an incredible 66 holds and 26 saves. If you want to succeed against this team, get to them early. On the offensive side, this team is most definitely underachieving. They recently fired their hitting coach, Rod Carew, and are looking to change their approach in the second half of the season bringing on Champ Summers. Carlos Beltran, Blalock, and LeCroy in particular are feeling the heat and need to step up in the second half of the season. Two players who need to keep it rolling are Nomar and Ichiro. Both had outstanding first half performance after being acquired in the offseason. Vegas has this series going to Southlake 4 game to 2, but the sharps are calling for a split. Will Vegas be right or is smart money actually smart? |
| Game #1: | Mark Prior has been dominating all year; however, he has two no decisions in his last two starts. Stuck on 12 wins for a while now, can today be the day he gets lucky number 13? Iowa will counter with Jason Davis who had a rough game in his last outing. Will the long break be just what he needed to get back on track?Pitching Chaos once again pays off for the Stealers. Prior goes the first five innings to finally earn his 13th win of the season. Then 6 pitchers come in from the pen for the final 4 innings, yielding just one run, on three hits and a walk.Offensively Encarnacion hits his 12th of the season and Nomar goes 3-4 scoring a run and having an RBI of his own.Final Score: Stealers 6-3 WP: Prior (13-2) LP: Davis (7-5) S: Smoltz (16) |
| Game #2: | If you want to beat the Stealers you must get to them early. The Giants did that when Kotsay brought home Damon in the first inning. The Stealers didn’t let that lead last long as they hung a 3 spot up in the first inning of their own.
Aaron Cook looked like it might be a long day for himself. However, he settled down and scattered 11 hits over 7 innings and limited the Stealers to just those three runs. Kotsay added another RBI to his total in the third inning, and it was a 3-2 game. Stealer starter Ron Villone exited after 6 innings, and it was the bullpen once again putting the clamp down on any threat. Moto and Smoltz went through the final three innings giving up no runs, on two hits and striking out 4 Giants. Final: Stealers 3-2 |
| Game #3: | Iowa figured out the key is to score early. They loaded the bases with just one out in the first inning. However, Stealer starter Tejera struck out the next two batters to kill the possible rally.
Before Iowa could re-gather and put together some offense the game was out of reach. The Stealers used three run homeruns from Nomar and Blalock along with a grand slam by LeCroy to put the Giants to bed early. Stealers continue to be hot winning 18 of their past 20 games. Final Score: Stealers 12-4 |
| Game #4: | Triples early then the long ball later fueled another Stealer Victory. After loading up the bases in the second inning, backup catcher Diaz cleared them with a Triple. The next inning, Nomar led off with a triple and scored on a ground out.
Iowa did what many could not as they tagged the Stealers bullpen with a couple of runs and suddenly it was a 4-3 game heading into the bottom of the 7th. Ichiro decided to get in on the fun as he blasted a three-run homerun, and the game was out of reach. The Stealers continue to roll, but have the Giants figured out the Stealer bullpen? Final: Stealers 8-3 |
| Game #5: | The Stealers went out and traded for Wade Miller in hopes of finding a starting pitcher that could eat some innings and give the bullpen a rest. They found that pitcher in Miller as he throws his third consecutive complete game, and second win for his new team. He scattered 6 hits and gave up just 2 runs in the effort.
Offensively the Stealers pounded down the Giants with 14 hits while scoring 9 runs in what turned out to be a blowout. Final Score: Stealers 9-2 |
| Game #6: | The Stealers go for the sweep by starting their Ace Mark Prior.
Iowa used two errors by the Stealers in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Stealers tied it back with a leadoff homerun from Beltran in their half of the inning. A Wilson double in the 2nd inning gave the Giants the lead once again. Nix then hit the foul pole with a shot in the third inning and suddenly it was 4-1 Giants and Prior was on the ropes. LeCroy singled home Encarnacion in the 4th to halve the lead. Beltran tripled in the 5th inning and scored on a single to cut the lead to 1 run. With two on and two outs in the 6th inning, Baerga pinch hit for Ventura. He hit one deep to Kotsay in centerfield, but it somehow popped out of his glove for an error, and the lead was now gone as the Stealers took it over 5-4. The Stealers extended the lead when Nomar tripled and scored in the 7th inning. The Giants looked to take the lead back in the 8th inning. They put runners on the corners with just one out. Mota would not allow any type of comeback though as he came in from the pen and struck out the next two batters to kill the flames of a rally. Smoltz would finish off the 9th inning for his 18th save and the bullpen once again was the hero of the day. Final Score: Stealers 6-4 |
| Series Summary: | The Stealers sweep the Giants and now have won 21 of their past 23 games. They continue to ride this hot streak as they maintain hold of the AL Central lead.
Mark Prior is not sharp in either of his starts, but he takes his record to 14-2 by securing the win in the opener and the series finale. The bullpen continues to be the star for this team. They combined to go 15.2 innings with a Whip of 1.05, while garnering 9 holds and three saves in the six games. While not the results that the Giants wanted in their quest for a Wild Card Slot, they can be happy that Mark Kotsay had a bat that looks like it is heating up and perhaps can be a sign of things to come in the second half of the season. The Stealers leave the friendly confines of Steal City and travel to Dondero next. While the Stealers hope for Iowa to get hot as they host Yucaipa in a battle for a Wild Card slot. |

| Series Summary: | Flora-Bama and Michigan split. Michigan feels good as the Mullets have a much better overall record. |

| Game #1: | Houghton calls up Scott Downs for his first start of the season against the Oaks’ John Lackey. Scott Downs and John Lackey are both dominant to state the game. Lackey only gives up 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th including a solo homerun to Albert Pujols, but Downs takes a 1-hit shutout into the 8th inning before giving up a solo homerun to John Valentin.
