OREL HERSHISER – MWWL HALL OF FAME BALLOT BIO
Orel Hershiser is unquestionably one of the most dominant starting pitchers in Mid-West Winter League (MWWL) history, earning his place in the Hall of Fame through a sustained career of excellence and two distinct periods of pitching mastery. Over his 18-season career, he suited up for seven teams: the Baton Rouge Ragin’ Cajuns (1983), the Chicago Demolition (1984-1992), the Stockton Wings (1984), the Manhattan Gas Hornets (1992-1993), the Hampton Huskies (1994-1997), the Cincinnati Outlaws (1997), the Baltimore Blue Crabs (1998), the Corktown Bootleggers (1999), and the Monroeville Maulers (2000).
Hershiser’s cumulative statistics speak volumes. He amassed 204 regular season wins—a spectacular total against only 140 losses—and appeared in 475 games, 425 of them starts. He logged nearly 3,000 innings pitched ($2951.2$), finishing with a remarkable career ERA of 3.60 and a stellar WHIP of 1.24. From 1985 to 1989, his tenure with the Chicago Demolition was legendary, highlighted by a dominant 22-win season in 1988 and a microscopic 2.34 ERA. During this peak, he was named an All-Star Game Reserve in 1988.
While his regular season numbers are more than enough to qualify, Hershiser truly cemented his legacy in the postseason. Across Division Series, League Playoffs, and the World Series, he went a combined 10-2 with a save, boasting clutch performances that included a stellar run to the 1988 World Series title, where he went 2-0 with a 3.14 ERA. A second All-Star selection in 1995 with the Hampton Huskies further affirms his longevity and ability to remain an elite-level competitor for nearly two decades. His combination of wins, innings, and two All-Star selections makes him an undeniable MWWL Hall of Famer.
