Joe Morgan‘s 15-season Mid-West Winter League (MWWL) career cemented his status as one of the league’s all-time greatest second basemen and an undeniable Hall of Famer. Over 1,926 regular season games, he amassed 1,906 hits, 1,317 runs, 186 home runs, and 491 stolen bases, retiring with a career regular season slash line of .271/.382/.417 for an .799 OPS.
Morgan was a foundational star for the Chicago Demolition (CHI), spending his first 11 seasons with the team. He also played for the Jacksonville Red Caps (JAC), Fort Worth Panthers (FWP), Long Beach Titans (LBT), and finished his career with the Lauderdale Breakers (LAU).
His peak with the Chicago Demolition was legendary. From 1972-1977, he was an offensive and defensive force, culminating in his 1975 Most Valuable Player award. That year saw him achieve career highs in batting average (.334), on-base percentage (.448), slugging percentage (.530), and OPS (.978), while stealing a remarkable 76 bases. He earned eight All-Star selections as a starter or reserve with the Chicago Demolition. He won five consecutive Gold Glove Awards at second base from 1971-1975, showcasing his unparalleled defensive consistency.
Beyond the regular season, Morgan was a clutch performer, helping his teams reach the postseason multiple times. He was a champion with the Chicago Demolition, playing in three World Series (1972, 1975, 1977) and winning in both 1975 and 1977. His overall career totals—including a staggering 1,281 walks against just 775 strikeouts—make him an icon of efficiency and skill. Joe Morgan is unquestionably deserving of his place in the Mid-West Winter League Hall of Fame.
