DAVE PARKER – 1994 MWWL HALL OF FAME SPEECH
Mid-West Winter League Commissioner John “Stray” Corrado’s Introduction Speech for Dave Parker:
Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, and fellow aficionados of the Mid-West Winter League (MWWL), it is my utmost honor and pleasure to stand before you today on this auspicious occasion as we celebrate the induction of a true titan of the diamond into our esteemed MWWL Hall of Fame.
Dave Parker, a name synonymous with excellence, a paragon of athleticism, and a stalwart of the game, has etched his name into the annals of baseball history. His accomplishments stand as a testament to his unparalleled skill and dedication to the sport we hold dear.
Parker’s journey through the MWWL has been nothing short of legendary. His .294 batting average, a testament to his prowess at the plate, strikes fear into the hearts of opposing pitchers. The .345 on-base percentage speaks volumes of his ability to control the game’s tempo and dictate its flow.
Let us not overlook the awe-inspiring 349 home runs and the staggering 1444 runs batted in—feats that not only mesmerized fans but also solidified Parker’s place among the league’s elite. His offensive prowess was second to none, marking him as a force to be reckoned with in every game he graced.
The six-time All-Star nods serve as a validation of his consistent excellence, while his back-to-back MVP awards in 1977 and 1978 further underline his dominance during his prime. Parker’s unwavering dedication and remarkable talent shone brightly, earning him the admiration and respect of teammates, opponents, and fans alike.
Perhaps equally impressive is Parker’s unwavering loyalty, having spent his entire illustrious career donning the colors of the Detroit Crime. His commitment to his team and the league is a shining example of sportsmanship and loyalty rarely seen in today’s game.
His impact on the MWWL extends far beyond the statistics; it’s about the passion, the leadership, and the unforgettable moments etched into the memories of baseball enthusiasts across the league.
Today, we bestow upon Dave Parker the highest honor our league can offer. We open our doors and hearts to welcome him into the hallowed halls of the MWWL Hall of Fame, where his legacy will forever be enshrined alongside the greatest to ever play the game.
Dave, your contributions to the MWWL have been nothing short of extraordinary. It is with the utmost reverence and admiration that we honor you today. Congratulations on this well-deserved induction into the Mid-West Winter League Hall of Fame!
Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, and fellow lovers of the game, it is with immense gratitude and humility that I stand before you today as an inductee into the revered Mid-West Winter League Hall of Fame. To say this moment is a culmination of a lifelong dream would be an understatement.
From the very first swing I took in the MWWL back in 1973 to my final at-bat in 1991, I had the honor and privilege of representing one team, one city, and one set of fans—the Detroit Stars. Under the ownership of the incomparable Sergio Ivone, I found not just a team, but a family. Sergio believed in me from day one, and for that unwavering support, I am forever grateful.
To play an entire career for one franchise is a rarity in the modern era of sports, but my bond with Detroit ran deeper than just the game. The city embraced me, molded me, and watched me grow from a young hopeful rookie to a seasoned veteran. The memories forged within the confines of that ballpark will forever be etched in my heart.
Throughout my tenure, I strived for excellence. The cheers of the fans, the camaraderie with teammates, and the joy of competing at the highest level were my driving forces. The statistics and accolades are merely a reflection of the passion and dedication I poured into every game.
To be recognized among the pantheon of MWWL greats is a humbling experience. The honor of being mentioned in the same breath as legends who graced the diamond before me is beyond comprehension.
This induction isn’t just about me—it’s a celebration of all those who supported me, mentored me, and stood by my side through the highs and lows. My teammates, coaches, family, and the incredible fans of Detroit—this honor is as much yours as it is mine.
As I bid adieu and take my place among the esteemed members of this Hall of Fame, & as we head off for a little after-party, I leave you with these parting words: “If you hear any noise, it’s just me and the boys boppin‘.” The echoes of the game, the memories shared, and the legacy left behind will continue to resonate within these hallowed halls for generations to come. Thank you.
