| Series Summary: | Harper Woods dodges Pedro as that game is rained out. They win the series 3 games to 2. All games were close |
Fort Worth Panthers @ Castle Rock Hounds |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | We’re really excited to manage this team, as a couple of years of mediocrity and relatively high draft picks have created a Castle Rock squad that can now (hopefully) compete for an AL West crown. Fort Worth comes in after being handled pretty well by California in the first series of the season. |
| Game #1: | Pettitte vs. Lima in a pitching mismatch. But, Doug Glanville (!) leads off the game with a solo HR for Fort Worth. Castle Rock comes punching right back with two in the first and two in the third. Fort Worth hangs around, with Pudge drilling a two-run shot. But, in the end, Castle Rock is able to hold on with the tying run at 2nd in the 9th for the Panthers. JT Snow was the big bat for the Hounds, with a double and HR. The Final is 5-4, Castle Rock.
WP: Pettitte: 2-0 |
| Game #2: | Hermanson vs. Kevin Brown is a more even match-up, even favoring the Panthers. But, the Hounds jump all over the ace, putting up 5 runs in just two IP, and forcing Fort Worth to pull their starter. That would be all that Castle Rock needed, as Hermanson and three relievers combine to give up only one run. Meanwhile, the Hounds pile it on, scoring 12 runs on 13 hits. Easley and Dye are the stars, each picking up 3 RBI on 2 hits. 12-1, Castle Rock.
WP: Hermanson: 1-1 |
| Game #3: | The Panthers get their first win of the series, as the Hounds leave their starting pitcher in a little too long, and Fort Worth capitalizes with two runs in the 7th to give them a 5-3 lead, which they would not relinquish.
WP: Nomo (1-1) |
| Game #4: | Although the Hounds jump out to a quick 3-0 lead, Fort Worth gets hot and plates 10 runs en route to a 10-7 victory. A lot of fireworks in this one, as the teams combine for nine extra-base hits, including three homers from Castle Rock (Snow, Huskey, and Hamelin).
WP: Anderson (2-0) |
| Game #5: | Doug Drabek, a 5, is starting for Fort Worth. So, of course, he throws an absolute gem. He goes 8.2 IP, giving up only 5 hits. Castle Rock manages to get the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th, down 3-0. But Bonds can’t get it done, and Fort Worth holds on to guarantee at least a split. 3-0 is the final.
WP: Drabek (1-0) |
| Game #6: | Something is in the water in Castle Rock, as the Hounds make it Bobby Witt, another 5-grade starter, look like Clemens, as he tosses a complete game shutout. The Hounds again manage to get the tying run on the bases in the 9th, but can’t make it happen. The final is 2-0.
WP: Witt (1-1) |
| Series Summary: | The Hounds rushed out to a 2-0 series lead and were brimming with confidence. The Panthers cut them down to size with four straight victories, and take the series 4-2. A disappointing outcome for the home squad, but it’s a long season. |

| Game #2: | SLS 10-14-1, CIN 3-5-1 Craig Biggio leads the attack with a 3-for-5 day with a homer, two runs scored and two driven in. |
| Game #3: | SLS 2-7-0, CIN 6-8-1 Mike Piazza rescues Cincinnati with a 2-for-3 performance, driving in a pair with a homer. |
| Game #4: | SLS 11-11-1, CIN 6-9-1 Ken Griffey, Jr. creates the sparks with a 2-for-4 night with a homer and three RBI. |
| Game #5: | SLS 5-6-0, CIN 6-8-1 Chris Jones delivers a homer and three RBI — making it three homers in two days! |
| Game #6: | SLS 9-12-0, CIN 3-6-1 Orlando Merced goes 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Tony Fernandez turns in a 3-for-3 performance with a couple of doubles for the losers. |
| Series Summary: | Sugar Land takes four of six and could have taken them all with a couple of breaks. It will be a long season in Cincinnati… |

Santa Rosa Beach Bums @ Manhattan Gas Hornets |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | 2nd week and the truth is bound to show up – no pitching will lead to a long season, especially against teams like the Bums who have great hitting! |
| Game #1: | Too much John Smoltz (W 1-0, and a single). He is supported by a 12 hit attack and a Frank Thomas homer (3) and a Greg Myers homer (1). SRB 5 MGH 0 |
| Game #2: | Gas Hornets only get 5 hits, 4 walks, and 1 favorable error but it gave them 7 runs and Matt Morris (W 2-0) had little problems. MGH 7 SRB 3 |
| Game #3: | Well the Bums unloaded for 16 hits including a Reggie L. Sanders homer (2) – 3rbis and 4 hits from catcher Carlos Hernandez. Matt Beech (W 1-1) goes 7 innings for the win giving up 1 hit and fanning 8 and NO RUNS! SRB 9 MGH 3 |
| Game #4: | The series pattern continues as Gas Hornets crank out 13 hits to win easily. They score 7 in the first as the first 9 batters reach base, 7 hits, a walk, and a HBP! Even starter Rick Reed (W 1-1) singles and drives in 2. Derek Jeter gets his 1st homer of the year and Tino Martinez hits his 2nd. Frank Thomas provided all the runs for the Bums with 2 homers (5) and 4 RBIs. MGH 10 SRB 4 |
| Game #5: | Game 1 of the Double Header sees too much John Smoltz (W 2-0) again. CG 4 hit shutout with 6 Ks (and another single). Probable Pitcher of the Week when it appears! Ken Caminiti leads to the offense with 3 hits and a rbi. SRB 3 MGH 0 |
| Game #6: | The nightcap of the DH and the best game of the week as the Gas Hornets nip the Bums 3-2 – Bums gave it a good rally in the 9th with 1 run, but Tom Martin (S 2) was able to get the final out to preserve a win for Brian Moehler (W 1-1) who almost finished the CG. Frank Thomas hit another homer (6) for the Bums and Jason Kendall continues to perform well for Manhattan going 2 for 4 with a run and 2 RBIs and a triple. MGH 3 SRB 2 |

Stockton Wings @ Long Beach Titans |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Stockton comes south to face division rival Long Beach |
| Game #1: | This was a really good pitcher’s duel between Mendoza and Benes. After Long Beach took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd, Stockton got solo HRs from Bellhorn and Greene and had a 2-1 lead in the 8th. The Titans tied it on a Jefferson throwing error in the 8th and the game went to extra innings. It stayed that way until the 12th. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, Boggs hit a soft ground ball to Jefferson at 1st. He couldn’t make a play at the bag and threw home, but it was too late and Long Beach won 3-2. |
| Game #2: | Long Beach jumped on Stockton starter D’Amico with 4 runs in the first and never led up rolling to an 11-0 win. Oliver added a grand slam and Baerga a 2-run shot and Cordova went 8 innings to pick up the win. |
| Game #3: | The Long Beach offense kept rolling in the 9-0 win. They scored 5 in the 2nd with Justice’s 2-run 1B the key hit. Garcia threw a 5-hit, 12K shutout in the win. |
| Game #4: | Another extra-inning game. Long Beach took a 3-2 lead into the 9th when Jefferson doubled in Hernandez to tie the game. It was still 3-3 in the bottom of the 11th when Baerga hit a SF scoring Oliver giving the Titans a 4-3 win. |
| Game #5: | Long Beach got a 2-run HR from Oliver and a 3-run bomb from Baerga and went on to a 10-2 win. Perez went 6 innings to pick up the win. |
| Game #6: | Greene opened the scoring for Stockton in the top of the 1st with his 3rd HR of the series. They added a run in the 5th on a SF by Hollandsworth. After Long Beach cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning, Greene came through again with a 2 run 1B in the 6th and the Wings went on to a 4-2 win. Oliver went the distance giving up 2 unearned runs to earn the win. |
