Valdosta  Bombers @ Manhattan  Gas Hornets
Preview
NL East 7 game series between the Bombers from Valdosta and the Gas Hornets – Manhattan’s finest!
Game #1:
Shane Reynolds vs. Jimmy Jones – Jones carries no-hitter into 6th – but Reynolds is just as strong. Wallach is able to take advantage of Finleys SBs in the 7th and drives him home with a single for the 1-0 lead. Bottom half the Gas Hornets take advantage of some control issues and Schofield drives in 1 and then Santiago connects for the game winning 2 run homer (9).
VAL 1-5-1 LP Reynolds (2-6)
MGH 3-3-0 WP J.Jones (5-2) S D.Jones (16)
Game #2:
Mike Moore vs. J.Morris – Morris takes a no-hitter into the 6th but then he gives up a hit and an rbi single to Finley. Then in the 8th Karros takes him out of the park for a 2 run homer (12) and a 3-0 lead. Morris struggles a bit in the 8th, giving up 1 but Boever and Franco bail him out to preserve the 3-1 victory (same score, flipped results).
VAL 3-5-0 WP Moore (2-11)
MGH 1-5-1 LP Morris (9-4)
Game #3:
Dave Burba vs. Dave Stewart – Scoring started early in this one as Burba gives up 4 hits and 2 walks in the 1st and Gas Hornets score 3. Huson homers later (3) for a 4th run. Stewart gives up 4 hits in 7 innings, Finley and Karros back to back doubles in the 6th was the only run scoring damage.
VAL 1-5-0 LP Burba (2-11)
MGH 4-9-0 WP Stewart (7-6) S Harris (4)3rd straight game Bombers only get 5 hits. 1st time in series Manhattan got more than 5 hits!
Game #4:
Donovan Osborne vs. Orel Hershiser – well the offesive outbursts (or should I say lack thereof) continues in this one. Osborne goes 8, gives up 4 hits and 2 walks and no runs. Hershiser does better. He goes 10 innings, gives up 2 hits, walks 1 and fans 9. Game is 0-0 after 9. Bottom of the 10th, Hershiser doubles, leaves for a PR (Alicea) and
he scores on a Fermin single with the infield in for the games only run. So Orel really does it all.
VAL 0-2-1 LP Boever (5-1) 10 innings
MGH 1-7-0 WP Hershiser (6-7)Valdosta breaks out of the 5 hits per game run, but did it in the wrong direction.
Game #5:
Trevor Wilson vs. Bob Welch – Bombers finally start bombing and score 4 in the 1stincluding a Benzinger 2 run HR (3). Benzinger drives in 2 more with a double in the 3rd and by the 4th it’s 8-1 Valdosta. McReynolds bops a grand slam in the 5th (4) and it’s 8-5. But Beover (7th and 8th) and Franco (9th) close it down for the win. 21 total hits in this one.
VAL 8-10-0 WP Wilson (4-5) S Franco (11)
MGH 5-11-0 LP Welch (6-3)
Game #6: Shane Reynolds vs. Jimmy Jones (round 2) – again the flood gates are open – 28 hits in this game. Manhattan gets a 1-0 lead in the 1st, Bombers tie it in the 2nd. Gas Hornets make it 2-1 in 3rd, but Bombers score 2 in the 6 as Sax drives in 2 against his former teammates (he goes 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 rbis in this one). 3-2 Bombers going into bottom of 7th …Bottom half wasn’t pretty – Gas Hornets score 2 on a WP and that was only 22% of their runs as they score NINE big ones in the inning. Sampen came in to spell Reynolds when he lost it and faced 4 – 2 hits, 2 walks. Brantley could do much either.
VAL 4-11-0 LP Reynolds (2-7)
MGH 11-17-2 WP Gott (7-4)
Game #7:
Mike Moore vs. Jack Morris (round 2) – so Howe do we wrap up this series? How about another 1-0 game with the winning run scored in the bottom of the 9th. Polonia lead off with a double, Alicea sacrifices him to 3rd and Livingstones grounder was weal emough for Polonia to score. Morris goes the whole way giving up just 3 hits – 2 less than  he did in game 2 and again just 1 run, but this time he got no support. Morris scatters 4 hits and Howe pitches the 9th (1 hit) and he gets the win.
VAL 0-5-0 LP Moore (2-12)
MGH 1-3-2 WP Howe (1-0)2nd game in which Gas Hornets win with just 3 hits.
Summary:
Gas Hornets manage a 5-2 series win – 2 games had some offense otherwise it was either stellar pitching of p*s* poor hitting (or combo).
Gas Hornets head to Sugarland next week for 7 as they embark on a 17 game road trip. Valdosta heads home to host Steel City.
